| Only thing I've heard is the French have sent armed troops to assist other UN sanctioned troops in the former French colony's fight against Islamic extremists. Plus what I've read. To wit: |

| I see a French pilot was killed in a raid! |
|
| @Duluth: That was a year ago. @Labrea: Yes, a French pilot was one of the people killed, along with ooh, gee, a couple of others. NBCNews.com 4 hours ago "French President Francois Hollande said on Saturday that France will pursue operations in Mali to prepare a subsequent African-led intervention to oust Islamist rebels and will step up anti-terrorist security measures on its own territory, Reuters reported. More than 100 people including rebels and government soldiers were killed in Mali during French air strikes and fighting over the strategic town of Konna, Malian military sources and witnesses said on Saturday, according to Reuters. A French pilot was killed on Friday when his helicopter was shot down during an attack near the central town of Mopti as France began the operation to help the Malian government stem a push south by rebels who control much of the north, Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said, according to NBC News. The operation targeted a column of rebels headed for Mopti. French army chief Edouard Guillaud said Saturday that while its troops would help quash the rebel offensive, there were no current plans to extend operations to northern areas controlled by the Islamists." | I dunno, elvis - Jan 12, 2013, is pretty current by my calendar. French ground troops were sent in Jan 11, 2013. According to the NYT, it seems the US is weighing its options how to assist the French. No ground troops projected. Remains to be seen if we can be but a very minor player in every African nation and their conflicts. I really wonder though if there are any African countries where we do not have some kind of "presence". |

| Regional forces are being sent in support of UN resolutions and those voted upon by the multinational regional authority. Many of these Islamic rebels were working for the previous Libyan despotic regime and were driven out by the revolution there. I knew I should have toured Timbuktu years ago. Now Islamic rebels are deliberately destroying the historic cultural features of this ancient city. |

From yesterday's NYT: French Strikes in Mali Supplant Caution of U.S. For years, the United States tried to stem the spread of Islamic militancy in the region by conducting its most ambitious counterterrorism program ever across these vast, turbulent stretches of the Sahara. |
