What did you think of Tim Thomas?

I haven't seen this discussed yet but I don't know if it's because it was missed or because hockey players don't make American news like a football coach would.

One of the sillier traditions at any Boston Bruins-Montreal Canadiens game at TD Garden is when thousands of the hometown fans start chanting "U-S-A! U-S-A!"

It's silly, because if you look down the Bruins' roster you might find two American-born players. The team that won the Stanley Cup last spring had one, and when it came time for the President of the United States to honour the Bruins' achievement Monday, the lone American on the team decided to boycott the event.

In a statement explaining his actions, goaltender Tim Thomas didn't sound like someone who's going to be chanting: "U-S-A! U-S-A!"

I think this part of the article is the part that sums up my feelings on the subject:

As a believer in free speech and individual freedom, I have no choice but to defend Thomas's right to make his stand. As a believer in civility a virtue that is in decline in our society I see his boycott as an expression of bad manners.

It was silly and pointless, no one cares. And in a few years he'll regret it, but the press will NEVER let him forget it.

I didn't read about it until your post hg. Shame on him. Respect for the office of the presidency should not be on the basis of who sits in that chair.

Shameful, and some jerk repub rep didn't attend the address last night as a protest against Obama's policies. Respect for the office should be shown just as military officers are saluted...

He deserves a game misconduct!

The President of the Unites States invited his team to be honoured at the White House. He didn't invite him to sit with Michele at the Sate of the Union address!

Shame on him!

RE: What did you think of Tim Thomas?

He joins a growing list of sports figures who have refused to honor an invitation to the White House by President Obama:

*** Hall of Shame ***

Mike Ditka

Tim Thomas

Dan Hampton

Tony LaRussa

and those who talk teabag hatred for president Obama openly like Luke Scott.
I suspect they have some internal feelings of hatred or inadequacy that is behind their shortsighted, ignorant refusal to
join their teams at an awards ceremony. How petty and vindictive.
