Murdoch rag praises Obama

First they were Reaganphones. Then they were Bubbaphones. Next they were Dubyaphones. Last year they became infamous as Obamaphones.

Hordes of critics attacked the president in 2012 for giving away free cellphones to the poor, with the tab covered by fees on every cell and landline user in the country.

But last week the truth came out: President Obama is actually helping dial down the federal program that’s created a $2.2 billion lesson in what happens when Washington’s good intentions go bad.

The feds created the Lifeline program in 1984 to provide landlines (and thus a connection of last resort to emergency services, job prospects and family members) in even the poorest homes.

Under Bill Clinton, the program was expanded, and in 2008-" at the behest of wireless carriers and on George W. Bush’s watch - " the feds started offering free cellphones, too. The only requirement was that recipients be on Medicaid, food stamps or another state or federal welfare program.

All those minutes added up: Last year, the government funneled $2.2 billion to the phone cartels to cover the cost of Lifeline.

But the feds never required proof from cell carriers that their millions of Lifeline users were truly needy. No surprise, the program has nearly tripled in cost since 2008.

So give credit to Obama now: When his FCC last year forced the carriers to verify that Lifeline users needed aid, it found the program was riddled with fraud and waste.

Some 41% of Lifeline cell subscribers failed to show that they were eligible, which means the FCC will be cutting the Lifeline rolls and the cost of the program.

It’s easy to see why people want free cell phones. But it’s also clear why the big carriers were eager for their business.

So many Americans have cells that carriers have a hard time finding new clients. What better way to drum up easy business than having the government cover the costs for millions of new customers?

This is the real face of corporate welfare. Lifeline was supposed to help poor Americans, but companies like Sprint and AT&T ended up on the dole with them.

A system designed to help the poor has ended up slathering profits on a lucrative industry. Good for Obama for cracking down on the Obamaphone.

Can't be--didn't we already establish that it is all Obama's fault because he is some kind of socialist who gives freebies to the poor in order to buy their votes? So how can this be true, I ask you?

The worm turns. As the Makers pay the Republican party to obstruct and it starts to trickle down on the Makers it will not be fun. Soon the deficit will not be a problem just as it was under Bush and every other Republican administration.

It is going to be interesting to see, The Taker oil companies, The Taker Bankers, The Taker Communications taken off of our Welfare Rolls. Imagine how fast that deficit will go down. So will some of our style of living when our stock goes down to Bush level of low stock profit returns.

RE: Murdoch rag praises Obama

Stop trying to confuse us with facts! We all know it is Obama that is giving this stuff away in droves to all his 47% friends.

If that 2.2B is for science, education, culture, or the arts, it is much, much too much money. If it is for a flying killing machine, it is far too little.

Priori-tea.

RE: Murdoch rag praises Obama

He's just cutting off the people that never deserved them in the first place.

He already got reelected, so it's no big deal.

RE: Murdoch rag praises Obama

Yes Demi, you did say those phones should be gone. But you said they were Obamaphones. Are you ready to admit you were wrong?

Did you read the link that Bush expanded the program? I always wonder how Bush was re-elected. I guess it was because of those free phones.

Don't expect a reply, Marquest.

That does bear repeating, marquest. Another Talking Point shot down and an embarrassment at best.

RE: Murdoch rag praises Obama

Now it's no big deal that the President is dealing with waste and fraud . He has also eliminated billions in fraud from Medicare.....no big deal because it is President Obama doing it.

Maybe if I repeat it 4 more times....Personal Responsibility will kick in.

Lily, what a childish thing to say.
Why do you say such petty things?
Jr. High gossip starts early this morning, I see.

The comments of you two supposedly grown and older women just reminded me why I haven't been here nearly as much. So after I finish this post I'm signing off.

I will address you two this one time--I knew all along what the program was, I believe I have posted links about the phone program, and I was referring to what the woman in the video and others in this region call those phones, "Obamaphones."
Since I obviously knew full well that the program was begun years and years before Obama took office, it's quite obvious I knew they weren't "Obamaphones" in the sense that he just decided to give free cell phones and cell phone service to people, which is the gist of what many posters attempted and failed to attribute to me.

My comments were to all of the "freebies" that people get--including phone service.

I posted under what president that program began, and it's original intent, and how it grew after cell phone service became prevalent, and how it has grown even more since Obama took office--and people around here brag about their "Obama phones."

So there is nothing to admit.

Tempest in a teapot, pathetic attempt to divert, and misrepresentations about what I said then, and here it goes now.

What is it with you people "demanding" anything from any poster, and chastising me for saying things I did not say, and for thinking things I never thought or said I thought?

Don't you get it, I don't play your games?

You didn't deserve this, but here it is.
If any of you want to devote your time to scores and scores of more threads about me, go right ahead.

Knock yourselves out--it doesn't change what I know, what I knew all along, and what I've learned about some of you.

I already live rent free.

Good day, ladies.

So this is your last post on Hot Topics? Noted.

I knew all along what the program was

So you knew the government didn't directly pay for the phones. But you wrote that they did. So you now admit you were being dishonest; you can't claim you were merely wrong. That's shameful. And you still have not issued the appropriate retraction. Where's personal responsibility?

 o
RE: Murdoch rag praises Obama

Personal responsibility, my a$$.

The queen of personal responbility for anyone other than herself cannot even admit she was wrong about something. As anyone who read the threads knows you implied they were just another handout by Obama. Not something started a long time ago and expanded under your guy, Bush.

Now that Obama is the one that is attempting to remove the abuse from the program, it's no big deal.

What's that word...oh, yes, hyprocrite.

I also don't understand the need to constantly tell us how you haven't been around and you're going out. For someone not here much, you sure manage to post an awful lot. Can't even be honest about such simple things. And why do you think we care that you're going out, or have been out all day, or whatever it is you like to tell us? Very strange.

No it won't - personal responsibility for thee, not for mee.

Excellent!
