And you thought Bush was dumb...

Our PM Stephen Harper, desperate to boost his party's flagging numbers against the NDP in the polls, fired a shot at NDP leader yesterday invoking Hitler and Nazi Germany (it always comes back to the Nazis!)

What he said was, "The leader of the NDP, in 1939, did not even want to support war against Hitler.". The problem is... the NDP did not even exist until 20 years later.

Poor Harper has now become a twitter joke, with his words being satirically used blaming the NDP for everything under the sun.

"The #NDP didn't even support the fight against the Death Star," @danspeerin tweeted.

"The NDP shamefully stood by in the fight against plaque and gingivitis," added @canadiancynic.

@jagmeetNDP claimed the NDP "is the reason the Leafs haven't won the Stanley Cup since 1967."

OTTAWANo stranger to political slurs, the New Democratic Party was nevertheless forced into delivering a history lesson this week about its pacifist reputation.

First point of clarification: There is and never has been a link between modern day socialism and the national socialism banner under which Adolf Hitler waged his destructive war in Europe.

That's an important one, particularly after Prime Minister Stephen Harper accused the NDP Thursday of opposing Canada's entry into World War II, thereby aiding the maniacal advance of Nazi Germany.

The rhetorical attack came as the Tories were hit with accusations (which they did not deny) that they are considering extending Canada's stay in Afghanistan after the current mission ends in 2014, leaving an unknown number of special forces soldiers on the ground.

"Canadians want a clear answer from the Prime Minister," said NDP leader Thomas Mulcair. "Will he keep our troops in Afghanistan past 2014, yes or no?"

"Unlike the NDP, we are not going to ideologically have a position regardless of circumstances," Harper said. "The leader of the NDP, in 1939, did not even want to support war against Hitler."

It is rare that modern-day politicians make reference to Hitler. As Tory backbencher Larry Miller found out just a few months back when he compared supporters of the long-gun registry to the German dictator, and it rarely escapes notice.

Veteran NDP MP Peter Stoffer, a keen student of military and political history, didn't have to point out that his party didn't even exist when Canada sent troops to fight Hitler's army in 1939. That much is widely known, even to Harper, who admitted he was referring to the NDP's forefathers in the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, which was formed in 1932.

The real story goes like this: The only MP to vote against Canada's entry into the war was J. S. Woodsworth, the party's leader and a Methodist minister.

"J. S. Woodsworth was permitted by his party and himself because of his conscientious objection," Stoffer said. "He was a religious man and he could not, for whatever reason, allow anyone else to kill another human being. It just wasn't in his fibre."

"The rest of the CCF party voted for Canada's entry into the war."

By Friday Harper's one-liner had turned into a refrain in the Conservative caucus.

"The NDP leader stated this week it does not support this mission. This is not surprising from the left. In 1939, the leader of the CCF even said, "I would ask whether we are to risk the lives of our Canadian sons to prevent the action of Hitler, " he said.

He was followed by Foreign Minister John Baird, the government's chief attack dog with a near-identical line.

"It's just nonsense," Stoffer said.

A number of people on Twitter appeared to agree as they mockingly fingered the NDP as the prime actor in other notable moments in real and fictional history - everything from the outbreak of the plague to the Toronto Maple Leafs' Stanley Cup drought, to failing to defend the fictional world of Gondor in the novel and film, Lord of the Rings.

RE: And you thought Bush was dumb...

Well, the twitter group got one thing right, those Tim Hortons ads are extremely irritating, which ever side of the Detroit River they come from. Please, no more rolling up of rims, thank you, and no, your Peach Mango smoothie does NOT look like it's full of "real fruit" -- it looks like it tastes as fake as the McDonald's version. And, no, I don't "always have time" for Tim Horton's, especially the stupid location I have to drive by on my morning commute where the local government idiots let them pack it in on far too small of a lot, with inadequate parking and drive through lane, so that it backs up the traffic out onto the main road. Because, you know, I love being stuck five minutes in traffic just so someone can have a latte.

Wow, who know I had so much anger over a stupid Tim Hortons. That felt good to let it out!

I've hit just about every one of these and never had a complaint. :)

RE: And you thought Bush was dumb...

denninmi.......that hurts, that really, really hurts. You can call us socialists, say we are too polite, make fun of how we speak but speaking ill of Timmies!!!! That is low!

HG, the NDP are really surging , especially in Quebec. Actually there seems to be a swing back to the left in several countries.

So far I've been impressed with Mulcair so far and I'm not an NDP'er. As for Harper.....what a boob!

RE: And you thought Bush was dumb...

Strangely I thought you were going to talk about building of prisons HG but this is funnier. The crime rate in Canada has been dropping over the past few years and Harpers response to this news was to increase law enforcement numbers and build massive new prisons to accommodate the increasing number of offenders. Now THAT is dumb.

RE: And you thought Bush was dumb...

...just like "Steve's" buddy GW did....dumb and dumber!

RE: And you thought Bush was dumb...

I think the attached (long) link offers a lot of insight into the workings of the Canadian government that we Canadians are inclined to ignore while looking open mouthed at the circus due South.

RE: And you thought Bush was dumb...

It is my fondest hope that Canada remain the solid, strong, intelligent, caring nation to the north.

Please do not look south... it may be a good source of humor, but do not allow your politicians and leaders to emulate some of ours! Greed is not a becoming look for any nation, and once it digs in, it's incredibly difficult to fight against.

So... listen hard to those who would warn you against taking the path to privatization, and do not follow us down the road to economic ruin and third world status. Do not lose the value you have built, like we did.

Looking due south and following in our footsteps can only lead to disaster.

South is mexico. Vista bien.
