| Can you believe it was 35 years ago today that Elvis Presley died? His career was a tragic decline fueled by money and other peoples greed, 'Colonel' Parker being at the top of a long list of parasites. |

| And Madonna is 54 today! |
| I remember the day. It was clear, sunny, and I was in the car sitting with my best friend Alina when her mom came out of Safeway. Why was she crying? I just didn't get it. I was only 10. Everything is mysterious at 10, though. |
| are you saying that's the reason he died Joe ? |
| I was in a car at a Tigard, Oregon gas station. I had just gotten off work and was shocked by the news. To this day when I see a picture of Elvis when he was healthy and smiling, I can't believe how handsome he was! |
| Yes he died for her future sins & untreated multiple addictions! |
| Honestly, I've never been a huge fan. "Suspicious Minds" is my favorite "Elvis" song, along with another, the title escaping me at the moment... but the man, himself, never did impress me much. Now, Johnny Cash is another story. That man had talent and demons, and he exorcised them quite well through his lyrics. I'm not a country/western fan by any means... so, much of that end of the music spectrum/business simply doesn't hold me in its spell. Give me hair metal of the 80's, or music of the 60's through today, include some good, old time Delta blues and some modern rap, and maybe a little pop or top 40, and I'm happy. Keep me away from Muzak elevator noise, most country/western, and there won't be a problem! ;-) Classical is ok... but only in small doses. I'm a rock & roll chick from the days of big hair, and a cross between the anything-goes-Madonna to Joan Jett style of dress, with lots of leather! :-) Strangely, though, the haunting sounds of some Spanish/Latino/Mexican guitar music can be very intriguing... My musical tastes are varied and wide, but Elvis never played a role in forming what I like. As it is with too many artistic talents, Elvis couldn't deal with a lot of the stresses, and addictions took him away too soon.

| I was never a fan either - I wonder if the hard core fans were people who were kids when he was younger and at the top and stayed fans as he matured? I wasn't of that age group so he left me cold. The Beatles woke me up to music when I was a young kid and I just went from there, rock but not hard - pop music really. And classical, my father had classical music playing quietly in the house from sunup to sundown, so who could not like it, it's so beautiful? I can remember sometimes he would stop mid sentence and close his eyes to listen to a portion of a piece, then open his eyes and continue the sentence. THAT'S music appreciation! ;) I like new orleans jazz, all kinds off stuff. Not blue grass, country or rap though. Lots of the alternative is very, very good. I don't understand the effect Elvis continues to have on culture but I never did get the whole Elvis thing to begin with. He seemed slick and greasy to me. |

| This is a fairly recent thing... |

| To get an idea of who Elvis WAS you need to listen to the recordings he made on Sun Records and forget all that white sequined Las Vegas crap. |

| I have to agree with the Sun Label recordings. "That's All Right" backed with "Blue Moon of Kentucky" were - and are - still great. Never really was a big fan, but there's some good stuff there. |
| Yeah that's true the sun label music was great even if it's not my cup of tea! |

| Don't tell me you'd pay to see Christina Aguilera on stage. |
| I had tickets to see him August 22, 1977.... by then the king had left the building. Apparently the tickets are worth a lot of money. Alas, I've no idea what ever happened to them. |
| I wouldn't pay to see her perform, but that girl has a range that defies the laws of physics! She is talented! It's the glitz and extras that I can't handle. Like many before and after him, meaning Elvis, it's usually the early stuff that's better. It's like that with a lot of artists. Look at Robert Johnson as an example. Once the fame kicks in, and greed enters the room, it changes. I'd never want to be in shoes like that. |
| DH and I were in a pub in Moffat, Scotland, when we heard of his death. 1977 was also the year of the silver anniversary of the Queen's inauguration. It's easy to remember because the Moffat Pipe Band had been chosen to play at the celebration and we watched them in the village square that day or the next as they performed. I was never a fan of Elvis altho' I like some of his music. I was working in a photography shop one summer and a customer got some photos and showed me one of her and Elvis together after one of his concerts. She was so thrilled and I wondered, to myself, what's the big deal? |
| I was too young to appreciate Elvis. But I think that without Elvis and a few others like Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard etc - who brought that beat and rhythm of blues and gospel to the mainstream we might not have had the artists that followed. |
| "Like many before and after him, meaning Elvis, it's usually the early stuff that's better. It's like that with a lot of artists. Look at Robert Johnson as an example." All of Robert Johnson's tunes were early stuff... He died in 1938 at the ripe age of 27. Unless you have some unreleased music that he performed after his death (can I get a copy?)... |
| I had just turned 12 the day before and I was reading a book in the office of a homebuilder where my parents were picking out finishes for our mid-build house. So the anniversary of Elvis' death will forever take me back to Avocado bathroom fixtures, Harvest gold kitchen appliances and flocked wallpaper. |

| I remember as a junior high kid listening with my friends to Heartbreak Hotel. He was so different , the way he slurred the lyrics. I came into puberty when rock and roll was born, and I have always loved it. Was not a huge Elvis fan, had none of his records, but he was a major talent. I remember my parents cringing when he swirled his hips on the Sullivan show although they didn't show it. He was very handsome in his early years, just not my type. I was more a Simon&Garfunkel kid and the Beach Boys, the Stones , all those British groups, and of course my all timers the Fab Four. Still love the fact that Paul and Mick and the BB are still at it. My dad died the week Elvis died and I think Bing Crosby too. |
| Somewhere along the line, I picked up a full box set of his (Robert Johnson) recordings, remixes, and a bunch of stuff... and lost it all in the house fire we had. Maybe my memory is not serving me correctly... it's entirely possible. I may be referring to a mix of bluesmen I've heard over the years. Thanks for the correction, as I'm not always accurate in remembering. :-) My point, though, really was that once money or fame enters the picture, and greed tags along for the ride, things change. It doesn't really matter who the artist is. Too many have had issues they simply couldn't deal with. How about Curt Cobain? Better example? :-) |
| You had to be 13 years old, ear up to the old radio as you dialed for obscure radio stations that did not censor this new singer that had the parents all upset because he wiggled his hips! Then finally you heard it faintly in the background--"Down at the end of Lonely Street at [beat] Heartbreak Hotel./ Oh baby,oh, baby, I been so lonely, baby, I been so lonely,/ I been so lonely I could die." Ahhhh, those were the days! Las Vegas El was his distant cousin, you know, don't you? Kate |
| It was a gray, rainy day and I was driving from LA to San Diego when the news came over the radio. I had to pull off and park, remembering, with a few tears, my utter obsession with Elvis when I was a young teen and he hit in the mid-fifties. He was a bolt of lightning into the Hit Parade, which consisted of Doggie in the Window and Love Letters in the Sand, etc., a sex god with a voice that ranged from low baritone to high tenor, and all we "nice girls" just collapsed. A few months ago, I bought, on a whim, Peter Guralnick's two-volume biography of EP, not having thought about him for a long time, and rediscovered him, especially his wonderful early music. Guralnick's books are a tour de force of research and detail, telling of the abysmal poverty in which the Presley family lived, and then his hitting instantly with the first playing of That's All Right on Memphis radio, and finally, the great tragedy of his downfall. Guralnick is super-knowledgeable about this type of music, gospel, soul, blues, R&B, hillbilly, bluegrass, and all the singers, both black and white, and he tells a very full story. Don - Million Dollar Quartet - Yes! Have it and love it! Probably only for lovers of the pre-Army songs. It's a jam session that was not intended for recording. There's a lot of jokey conversation between the guys, and a lot of music, some songs done over and over, others abandoned in the middle. We don't hear much, if anything, of Johnny Cash; he was very young and just starting, whereas EP was already a star. Jerry Lee is very anxious to show what he can do on the piano. Elvis was also a pianist - as Guralnick writes, he learned to play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata by ear. Mylab - I was also raised on classical music, and it's still my favorite. But every so often one needs something else! |
| Just having a little fun with you... I'd agree that often musicians decline, in at least the idea/innovation department, as the years pass. Some notable exceptions in my estimation would be the Beatles, Howlin' Wolf, the Pixies, Steely Dan & Miles Davis (although many folks don't care for his later fusion stuff). I'm not a huge Presley fan, but I do have a dozen or so of his songs in my playlist. Return to Sender popped up unexpectedly on my media player halfway thru this response... |

| My son was killed by a falling tree when he was 7 yrs. old....same day Elvis died. (Our family was camping in a CA state park.) It was difficult explaining to my other children why people were crying over someone they didn't even know. It was two days before my daughter turned 11 and my other son was 12. We get reminded every year of our loss. |

| Dockside, I know Moffat, Scotland quite well and I had my first of many visits there in 1978. 35 years is a darned long time and I agree with all the Sun Label comments. Elvis had a very good voice in his younger years, but I was only a medium fan. Jailhouse Rock always triggers specific high school memories though.... |

| I don't have all those memories of specific performers. DH and I did not and don't share the same taste in music so I never made the effort just to keep the peace. The adulation always surprised me. Over the years a piece of music will catch my attention and I will pause to listen. Inevitably it will be one of the singers or groups or musicians considered great. Elvis is almost always in that group as are the Beatles. Talent will withstand the changing affects of time even when you were unfamiliar with the original. |

| My mother was pregnant with me, and my father had just returned from a disastrous Mexican fishing trip ... but before my time or not, I have always loved Elvis. Despite a variety of other more hippieish personal tastes, and much to the chagrin of my "cool young Aunt" (who is now in her fifties lol) I've always liked Elvis better than the Beatles too. The Beatles had great lyrics of course, but on sheer talent, Paul McCartney's pleasant but unremarkable voice just cannot compare. In fact, I can sing better than Sir McCartney after a bender and a full pack of cigarettes ... doesn't mean I don't like any of the Beatles music, but Elvis' voice was truly unusually fine. |

| No edit button to fix my pronoun problem ... I intended that after I had spent a night drinking and smoking I would still sound better than Sir Paul ... not that I needed for him to have gone through such a night for me to outdo him! |

| So sorry to hear about such a loss, Carol... I couldn't imagine. I would have added this earlier, but the thread slipped down the page... and as Elvis was not really a favorite... well... it's still a terrible date coincidence to have to bear. |
