Surely this could not be true! Don't Sheriffs swear to an 'oath of office'?
So I looked it up; only to find nothing concrete. The verbiage is vague and the duties are many and varied.
I started off by thinking their action must be improper; if not illegal.
Now, I am unsure. Especially when I recall the "cowboy films" of my youth. The Sheriff mostly carried out the wishes of the town folk. Occasionally the Sheriff would question his mandate but everything ended well.
What is the real deal here?
