Canadian Scandal aka Fluff

| Here's a thread for those who want a break from issues like whether the US is going to attack Iran, exit Iraq, how promising or depressing the US election results will be... Canadian politics seems to get caught up in silly scandals (tunagate went on for months). The current scandal is that our foreign minister, Peter Mackay (the one rumoured to have tried to turn a meeting with Condi into a date), referred to his ex-girlfriend, Belinda Stronich (whose billionaire father built Canadaville for Katrina survivors and is herself an MP) as a dog, in the House of Commons. Many months ago, Belinda uncerimoniously dumped MacKay and switched parties (from Conservative to Liberal) and MacKay apparently still holds a grudge.
The Liberal party first asked for a public apology and now has presented the House with 8 legal affidavits from MPs who swear they heard MacKay refer to Stronich as a dog. Meanwhile, MacKay is denying the whole thing and Harper is supporting him. The Liberals have asked for an all-party enquiry into this (yes....Canadian politics sometimes goes this way; obviously there isn't enough for our MPs to do). The newspapers have been having a field day for the past five days (in the dog house, bone of contention, McKay dogged, and on-and-on). Anyway, with that background, if you want to take a break from serious stuff, you can weigh in on whether MacKay should apologize (the initial request which he has refused) or resign (what some people are now requesting, arguing he not only is sexist but is now lying) or whether everyone is acting like turkeys.
I think MacKay obviously didn't have the wit to pull this off (like Trudeau who turned his public F---O-- into Fuddleduddle) so he should have just simply apologized right off. |

| Sounds like a tempest in a teapot to me. Has it been a slow news week up there? And BTW, speaking of dogs, looking at that picture of him -Arf! Arf! |

| So, did Mackay dump Stronich for Condi, or did Stronich dump Mackay for Clinton? That's all that matters to us Americans. |

| So, did Mackay dump Stronich for Condi, or did Stronich dump Mackay for Clinton? My, you are up on Canadian gossip, aren't you? Stronich has been "good friends" with Clinton for years (before MacKay) but she definitely did the dumping with MacKay. He was so heartbroken, he went home to Nova Scotia to spend time with his dog (really!). He only hooked up with Condi much later, and meanwhile Stronich has moved on to some hockey player. MacKay is known as quite the ladies man (I know, hard to believe with that pix, Arf!), but as Stronich herself says, she doesn't exactly stay home knitting. I know all this because almost every week is a slow week for news in Canada. |

| He should have apologized and been done with it days ago. If he doesn't want to own up to the comment, I'm sure someone could spin an apology for him that doesn't actually include him ADMITTING anything. You know - his comments were misunderstood, or taken out of context, or whatever. I really don't think the House is the place for this foolish crap. If he called one of his peers "a dog" he needs to grow up and act like the professional he is. The House is not the place for his personal agenda. Canadians deserve better than this. |

| McKay: "My dog? You already have her." Stronach: "He's meaaaan. Make him say he's sorry!" McKay: "Disgust at the sight or mere mention of you means never having to say I'm sorry." Stronach: "Nobody likes you. Everybody hates you. Might as well go eat worms!" McKay: "Look, it's not you. It's me. I just can't stand you. You're such a child, is it any wonder that you're the biggest joke in Canadian politics?" Stronach: "Hello? Media? I'm very rich, and you'd better make sure that this stays on the front page for a long time. I'll even give you photo ops of me and my many boyfriends." |
