New magazine formats. Will they attract or retain

readers? Magazines seem to have realized that between cable and the Internet that news and commentary are available so fast on these outlets that they had no choice but to change as subscriptions and advertising revenues decline. Personally, I like the new essay style adopted by some as they provide a little more depth than one got in the past. Any thoughts, and any magazines that you particularly like that have changed?

If the comparison is between actual paper magazines and E-zines, I'll take the paper ones every time. I like to actually have the magazine in hand, and to be able to reference articles and pictures where ever and when ever I like. Technology is only good when it works.

The only complaint I have is that the majority of magazines seem to have more ads than content.

I agree with jodi but then we are older folks. Because I never look at ads, I get irritated by so many ads interfering with easy access to content.

Paper kills too many trees and creates alot of trash. I'll stick to online formats.

Advertising has diminished greatly in my magazine. However, you can tell what age group it caters to. There are 5 ads selling erectile dysfunction fixes.

I'm glad I'm so over sex!

LOL

One reaches an age where companionship is way more important than physical lust, I suppose... although, I'm not quite ready to give up the ship, as it were! I'm still alive! ;-)

I miss the magazines that used to contain coupons and small samples... and content. Even gardening magazines are all about selling the latest products.

I stopped subscribing to nearly all gardening mags a decade or more ago and even some specialty hort. ones for the same reason. Too many sexy ads and too little (sexy) content. When the Organic Gardening magazine hit the 15% fluffy content level, I gave up a 40-year subscription to the mag. The "new" mag often contained more recipes than gardening tips.

The recipes in these things are what get me.

I'm going to find 4 oz of organic rosemary-infused aged goat cheese where? Aisle 4 at Safeway, right beside the Cocopuffs?

Yeah... I don't need recipes that require obscure ingredients... if I get a gardening or horticulture magazine, I expect it to be all about gardening or horticulture!

Even Mother Earth News isn't what it once was... that's disappointing.

I'm finding with the ones I look at that even when a cover story sounds enticing after I read it there was not much to it - could have gotten more information on the same topic right away with an internet search. And the internet service is already paid for, the 5 or 8 bucks per copy for the magazine (off the rack) is an additional expenditure on top of the too high fee for internet service.

Sometimes the same information is available for free from the magazine's web site. And when you buy the print copy then you have to do something with it after you've read it.

Santa Monica farmers' market -- Wednesday or Saturday. Follow the chefs, or their assistants, to the stash.

Tyring to find more mudane produce is sometimes a problem.
