Latest Republican push back....

The President has nominated an incredibly competent person to head the Consumer Financial Regulatory Board and by all accounts all parties, both sides of the aisle, agree that he is the right guy....but his nomination has been voted down.

The reason.... the Republicans want new definitions and responsibilities to the department attached to the nomination.

This is what I think has gone so awry in American politics...an abandonment of process and protocol that brings and guarantees fair order to things in favour of any tactic that will bring down the current President.

The the consumer financial agency was created and defined by an act of Congress and signed into law. If some want to see changes to that law then the process is to table a bill to affect those changes. Why? So the changes can be vetted and debated in accordance with the principals of the American constitution.

But no, the Republicans in the Senate want to bypass the legitimate congressional process to change the law and tie those changes to a political appointment.

Think about it......very, very scary.

One of the changes being requested is that there NOT be a director. Once that change is made, approving a director is not required ....

I do think it is becoming more and more clear that our current system of politics is not set up to be productive.

Essentially, they want to do away with the new consumer protection agency in its entirety. They were against its creation and solidly opposed to Elizabeth Warren.

This is more obstruction and game playing, just like the Republican Congress has done since the day Obama was elected. They have refused to allow Obama to carry out his agenda even though he was legitimately elected by the people.

Meanwhile Elizabeth warren just took the lead in the latest polls concerning the Mass. Senate race.

GO Elisabeth. She's at 49%. Scott is toast.

My point on this is not the specifics of their reasoning although that in and of itself is interesting.

It is that they are trying to change the law of the land, a bill dully signed into law by Congress and signed by the President during a confirmation hearing!

Confirmation hearings are not meant as a vehicle to change laws ! If they want to change the law then put a bill forward and have it vetted according as it should be.

If they don't want to confirm this guy then don't and introduce a bill that amends the existing laws.
