OMGosh has anyone else seen the White House Chrismas Card
this year?

It is by far the cutest card ever.
Larassa Kabel an artist from Iowa, was sent a picture of
BO and was asked to paint and submit it for consideration.
Her's was chosen ( out of many ) and what an honor for her.

As I said , it is the cutest coming out of the WH ever.

As a Photographer I appreciate the Image I fail to see what it has to do with Christmas.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I fail to see what it has to do with Christmas.

Thank you Mistah Scrooge, and God bless us...every one!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Too personal for me. I like to see a card that doesn't reflect on the actual occupants.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Now HAM don't ruin one of my my favorite stories with misquotes!
A dog in the snow to a cat person is merely a dog in the snow & says nothing about the birth of a prophet, a savior or a teacher which is what the day commemorates for various people.
"Merry Christmas Mr Scrooge in keeping with the situation"
said Mrs Dilber! After Mr Scrooge purchased her good humor & warm wishes with the gift of a guinea & a raise!

I would though suggest the situation is the celebration of the arrival on this planet the ideas of this child born at some point but commemorated on this day!
Mark my words as a non theist the image is a dandy one but for Christmas! P.U.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I love dogs, I love snow, and I understand the need to keep religion out of the picture. I like it!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I like it. It does not offend anyone. You cannot hate a dog playing in the snow.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Who could not like that sweet dog?

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Exactly. It is tradition from the WH to send Christmas
cards and I found the subject matter absolutely delightful.
No way could anyone be offended.

They made a very wise choice. Love it.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I miss Millie and Ranger...

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Who could not like that sweet dog?

The custodian that has to scoop!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Why send anything then?

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

One of the Bush Cards was a piano that was just as bizarre to me.
Now if they called it a holiday card (they may very well)I would certainly have no problem but the calendar dysphoria & the waste of money sending these things in the first place... puhlease.
I know I'm a curmudgeon I would find an an advisement for the 4th of July with snow & skiing on it equally stupid (if not fearful)!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I actually got this card in the mail from the White House (I guess volunteers get Christmas cards) and I can assure you that it is a beautiful card. I actually teared up when I opened it and saw the image. The card is signed by Barack, Michelle, Sacha, Malia and Bo (and there's a dog print next to Bo's name). The image is a painting by an Iowa artist. I just LOVE it and was so excited to receive it!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

"As a Photographer I appreciate the Image I fail to see what it has to do with Christmas."

I can't claim to be a superb artist or anything like that, but I don't like the composition. For some reason it bugs me that the dog is in the exact center of the card. Neither here nor there. Now that I think about it, I don't really think I've ever seen a good Christmas Holiday card.

(Right now I'm feeling the pressure of the Christmas Holidays and so I've moved over to Labrea's side of the room.)

And then to hear,

"I actually got this card in the mail from the White House (I guess volunteers get Christmas cards)...

put me over the edge.

I paid for that? I paid for Obama's little payback to his reelection campaign?

I just saw that the "artist" and her husband who is in a band that opened one of Obama's campaign parties is being invited to the White House Christmas party along with the rich celebrity friends of Obama. I guess I'm paying for that, too.

Bah Humbug!!!

Hay

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

A teacher would have slapped me for centering an object thanks Hay for pointing that out!
I don't like president's day either another waste of money commercial holiday when the Politicians aren't doing the work!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I doubt that you paid for it. It's obvious the campaign (Obama for America) did.

I disagree with take on the composition also.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

just as suitable as one with Santa and his reindeer.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Obama is President at a time when sensitivities are sticking out all over the place & religious-minded folks are looking for slights.

the card is pretty, & it's inoffensive & it's non-exclusionary.

& it has a big black dog on the front.

I like it.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

The image of BO is not exactly centered in the frame an the background foliage is not symmetric. It would look foolish to shiift the image of BO or the WH far off center, IMO.
I am not an artist but I like to think I have a decent sense for design and what looks good, and from my perspective, I have to give the artist an A+.

"Michelle Obama has chosen a Des Moines artists painting for this years official White House Christmas card.

Larassa Kabel learned the good news shortly before her husbands band was chosen to open for Bruce Springsteen at President Barack Obamas election-eve campaign rally in Des Moines East Village.

The artist, who is represented by Moberg Gallery and whose work features subjects often rendered in a dream-like blur, chose to paint Bo, adding a scarf around his neck.

"My mom was so happy," Kabel said. "Shes always told me, Oh, Larassa, you should do pet portraits. "

This high-profile pet portrait paid off, and she can now add "White House Collection" to her resume. Her oil painting is currently on display there, and she and her husband, Chris Snethen, are invited to a party at the White House on Dec. 18.

Snethens own brush with fame came after the name of his band, Bob Tyler and the Reckless Hearts, came up in a planning meeting for the East Village Obama rally.

The band plays each year during the Des Moines Marathon, on the Polk Boulevard lawn of a guy who turned out to be an Obama volunteer. One thing led to another until security dogs were sniffing the bands instruments for bombs and Snethen was shaking hands with one of his idols."

RE: WH Christmas Card

And hay, it's better than the image I have of Romney, escaping into the night in defeat, with his dog strapped up on one of his wife's Caddys.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Cat people everywhere are rising up in rebellion... I can see it already... (just kidding).

As a dog person, I like it. It gets the message across without offending anyone. It's really nice photography.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

And hay, it's better than the image I have of Romney, escaping into the night in defeat, with his dog strapped up on one of his wife's Caddys."

Romney??? I guess we should be thankful that we won't be having to hear the name Bush so much anymore.

"I am not an artist but I like to think I have a decent sense for design and what looks good, and from my perspective, I have to give the artist an A+.

Let me guess. You think Thomas Kinkade is a great American artist?

Heri:

""Michelle Obama has chosen a Des Moines artists painting for this years official White House Christmas card."

Jerzeegirl:

"I doubt that you paid for it. It's obvious the campaign (Obama for America) did."

Would the two of you get together and try to get your stories straight?

While you're at it, in the "Obama goes for a Holiday" thread about Obama's Holiday trip to Hawaii, it was said that Obama pays all his personal expenses for trips like this. Us taxpayers are not picking up the tab. Really, I say? Do you think Obama has a personal secretary and staff separate from his "official" secretary that was probably the one doing all the planning for that little holiday?

Are the Obama's going to be paying the White House for the use of the banquet room for the little Christmas gathering they're throwing? Did you get an invite, Jerzeegirl?

Hay

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I'm shocked. That "Holiday Card" [sic] is not only the most blatant attempt yet to put True Americans under the heel of Barak HUSSAIN Obama's Kenyan Socialist Alynsky oppression, it cost the tax payers $200,000,000 when he should be negotiating with the Republicans so that he will cut taxes further.

And Benghazi.

 o
Hey, what about ME!!!!

"It gets the message across without offending anyone.

Labrea and I don't count?

The message being that Michele has poor artistic taste?

Hay

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Honestly, I never thought I would see the day when a dog frolicking through the snow while snowflakes fall around him would become a condemnation of not being "Christmas-y" enough...

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Hayseed, the quote you cited was from the story I linked to.

It is clear you have a very bad case of sour grapes. Never forget, sore losing is usually ugly and there have not been many exceptions to that since Obama won.

Yes, YOU have to pay ten cents in taxes or something for the festivities at the White House. It is well worth celebrating, especially this year!
Merry, Merry Christmas to the Obama family and to ALL Americans.
We did it! Four More Years!!!!
Light the tree Mr. President!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

LOL, David!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Hay,

Is this the first time the WH has had an official holiday card? Why the objection now?

Me, I like the picture, but see little purpose in the WH sending cards at all, ever. I would prefer to save the money. But this is tradition, right? Doesn't every President do this?

Back to the picture: I wish the scarf were red. I love red in a black and white image.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

It is funny..... Sour grapes do not make a fine wine......Whine

A fight over a dog playing in the snow on a small piece of paper is a bit silly.

Geez what next.....Who pays for the toilet paper when the family uses the bathroom. That has to cost a lot.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I see some sites calling it a holiday card (I'm fine with that it's a generic image of a Northern Hemisphere atmospheric subject)
I believe you'd have to be brain dead though or never taken an art history class that Iconography are attached to ICONS.
If it's Christ Birthday JESUS MARY & JOSEPH wake up & smell the SANKA!
This is from a non believing awt lovah!
Go to see Stephen Spielberg's Lincoln and it's about the life of Pee Wee Herman!
Either have the convictions of you disbelief or get off the holly pot! ouch!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Okaaaay

labrea's gone bye-bye.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I love the card and am looking forward to getting mine in the mail. Last year I did and it wasn't even an election year. I agree with Elly, the only thing I would change is putting a red scarf around Bo's neck. Great contrast .

I have a black and white dog and a black and tan one, and I love to see them in black and white photos, instead of color.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

It is the White House Card. The card is coming from the Government body that is to represent all faith/non-faith celebration of the season.

If there was color added I would have liked to see the flag somewhere or a red white and blue scarf. But I like the devoid of color. It has a Silhouette affect.

It is not the Obama's Family Christmas Card to friends and family that they can demonstrate their personal convictions.

Ain't gone bye bye Ham though I hope your entertained!

I keep reading people trying to explain what it is or is supposed to sort of kind of be! I get what it's supposed to sort of kind of be & HURRUMPH I call that a seasonal myopic disorder.

it's like calling a tax a fee (it's still a tax)

Um, except the dog is not in the exact center of the card.

Oh yes, this place is always entertaining...and you & Hay keep me giggling.

& HURRUMPH I call that a seasonal myopic disorder

Also known as BAH! HUMBUG!

(See, I knew it was you, Mistah Scrooge)

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

If a red scarf were added, some would accuse Bo of being a communist.

labrea: Christmas is two holidays in one. In addition to being a religious holiday for many, Christmas is also a civil holiday. Which is why we ALL get off on Christmas but we don't all get off on the Feast of the Assumption, say. Let's just say the card the Obamas sent is celebrating civil Christmas and not religious Christmas.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

LOL oh come all yee fade full!
Tis the season of BON AMI & BEING & quasi judeo christian well you know winter fest Nation!
I am having fun with this but at the same time as I don't appreciate In God we trust, a 10 commandments in a court I certainly am agog at a slip of paper the has a nebulous wish for an obfuscated usurped counterfeit winter/christo/hannu/kawanzafest!
With such a large Asian American population I feel we aren't doing enough top promote a generic hallmark/kraft Lunar New Year we need a little Christmas pre presidents day! ARRRRGH!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Whoever chose the card certainly knows the audience well.

Personally that dog seems a little too happy to be out of the White House... and away from his Secret Service entourage.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

With such a large Asian American population I feel we aren't doing enough top promote a generic hallmark/kraft Lunar New Year

a) Will it get me a day off work?
b) Will potstickers be a mandatory part of the feast?

If you answered "yes" to either of those questions, then I agree wholeheartedly! Where do I sign up?

I now feel totally justified in my earlier remark that Labrea's gone BYE-BYE!

RE: WH Christmas Card

Honestly not my favourite I just have never been one for pet related Christmas cards.

Having said that WAY WAY WAY better than our PM's Christmas Cards from 2010 and 2011 .....honestly isn't there someone in the family or on staff who could have provided some advice...but it was cheap!

Please make 2012 better....

Here is a link that might be useful: Our PM regifts his Christmas cards

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

It would be a rare indeed for DC to have that kind of snow for Christmas. I have to agree with the pet related cards - but to everyone's credit, Bo isn't wearing felt antlers and there likely isn't the annual "Christmas Letter" tucked inside.

I get a couple of those letters where the list of interesting stuff is chronicled beginning on Jan. 1, of each year - from a memorable church sermon to winning at Bingo, from organizing a hotdish brigade for a neighbor's bunionectomy to you name it. I might smile but is it better than receiving no greeting from these folks - you bet'cha!

Someone asked about past WH holiday cards. This one's for you, all you interested in White House lore.

I just looked at my post and the card images don't show - but the text (sans pictures) is interesting enough.

Thanks for posting, CW.

Define "dog".

elly:

"Hay,

Otherwise I'd have to do the work I'm supposed to be doing.

But, now, IT'S FRIDAY NIGHT!!!! You're on your own.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Ooo...I just got the WH Christmas card. I must say, it's kind of neat to get something from the White House. And the grandchildren are quite impressed. And so am I.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

He's on his way to a clandestine canine tryst. Or maybe coming back from one. I think he's snipped.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I think the card is adorable. And I am a cat person. (I like dogs too except for yappers, and beggers, and droolers, oh, and crotch sniffers.)

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Selective breeding and proper environmental factors, when combined, normally produce dogs that behave as we prefer.

I'd love cats, too, if I didn't break out in hives and asthma every time I touched one! I'm hopelessly allergic!

I love the card, myself. And it's not even a breed I like or would endorse.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

it's not even a breed I like or would endorse.

What's wrong with Portuguese Water Dogs? I think they are beautiful dogs and very intelligent. They were on my short list when looking for a breed, but my daughter didn't want one. Ended up getting an Entlebucher Sennenhund (a rare swiss breed, related to the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and Bernese Mountain Dog).

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

They are also hypoallergenic. I'm allergic to pet hair, and my DD rather often brings up the hypoallergenic aspect of Portuguese Water dogs.

Since the Obama's got Bo, the price of a registered one is circa $3,000.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

The card is fine as far as I'm concerned. Bo the dog or his breed doesn't need anyone's endorsement. :-) No matter what went out in the mail someone would carp. A far sight better than the boxes of cartoon raccoons, birds, assorted forest creatures decorating a tree offered up by Hallmark or whatever.

I'm glad the Obamas aren't sending out fruitcakes - there's a topic for some serious debate.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

And, thankfully, they didn't include the Christmas letter. That would have been interesting.........

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

........ and in November, Barak won the election!

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

They are also hypoallergenic

Yes, and they don't shed which being a clean freak was one of my requested traits. The breed we went with shed constantly! But, it was worth the constant vacuuming for every second of the 12 years I had with my puppy.

-------------------------------------------------------
Bo the dog or his breed doesn't need anyone's endorsement

Agree 100%.

"They are also hypoallergenic. I'm allergic to pet hair, and my DD rather often brings up the hypoallergenic aspect of Portuguese Water dogs."

It was Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy who talked them into going with the PWD. Kennedy had 3 of them...took them to his office on the Hill all the time. It was a major news story when Splash, Kennedy's first Portie died after Ted's death.

Kennedy's son was allergic, that's how he came to know these dogs. He and his family fell head over heals with Splash and got 2 more, Sunny and Cappy.

I remember when he practically drove Obama nuts with all the lobbying he did to get Obama to agree to this breed of dog for Sasha and Malia. Bo was a gift from Kennedy and BO is a litter mate to Cappy.

Lovely dogs, and a lovely and fine man, Kennedy was.
I still miss him and I'm sure Massachusetts will always miss him. He was irreplaceable.

RE: WH Christmas Card

Just a personal preference... after a lifetime of working with varied breeds. I simply prefer certain breeds over others with respect to genetic clarity and other issues.

If that's the kind of dog you like, more power to you. Have fun. What do you want me to say?

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

There really is no need to say anything. No one put anyone on the defensive about the dogs they like, prefer, that meet various personal/family requirements. It's not a one breed world - bet there aren't three people on the forum that selected the same kind of dog as their pet. Well, maybe there are.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

My dog is better than your dog...

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

funny lavenderlver.

Well, ok, my dog is smarter. Lol.

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

I hate it when Jerzeegirl is right.

""Who gets White House Christmas cards? And can you get me on the list?"

....

The longer reply is that White House holiday cards go to political supporters, people who the administration wishes were political supporters, people who have fooled the administration into thinking they are political supporters, and staff. And the staff's friends. And, yes, the media.

A political list of recipients
The key word here is "political." That should not be a surprise. For any president, much of what appears to be part of normal life, even the acquisition of pets and the choice of vacations, is examined for political implications.

Remember, the government does not pay for the cards. The political parties do. So the best way to get one is to give money to the parties. If you want to make sure you get a card no matter who wins a presidential election, give to both."

So, Jerzeegirl may be right. "I doubt that you paid for it. It's obvious the campaign (Obama for America) did."

My consolation: I know I won't be getting one.

Hay

 o
RE: WH Christmas Card

Our local florist has 3 PWD's. They are cute. I like the long legs on my Labradoodles, though. Oh, and they're very smart.

Less expensive, too; I wish we were getting $3K for my new puppies ;)

I do like the "holiday greetings" card.
