Schefflera (umbrella) tree pruning

BER7777

Hello,

I have a 9 year old Schefflera (umbrella) plant. Over the years he grew into a palm tree like shape. He got two thick (1.5-2 inch diameter), straight (8-9 feet long) stems and the foliage is only on the top of the plant (top 1-2 feet).

The problem is that the plant got too tall. The taller it gets the less light is available. I am wondering if I could cut these stems in half. Will the plant be able to recover without the leaves? I can try to propagate the cuttings but I also want the main plant to survive - he is a member of the family.

Any suggestions?
