Four new Hoya species

Four new Hoya species and a new variety have been published in Fraterna, all are from the Philippines.

Hoya apoensis var. sagittarius Kloppenburg,Siar & Ferraras has been placed in the Acanthostemma section. The blooms of this species appear to not fully reflex.

Hoya carmelae Kloppenburg,Siar & Ferraras resembles Hoya myrmecopa but with wine/purple coloured flowers.

Hoya corazoniae Kloppenburg,Siar & Ferraras resembles Hoya apoensis but with blooms that reflex even less and give a look similar to Hoya davidcummingii.

Hoya ferrerasii Kloppenbur & Siar has beautiful pink star shaped flowers with a red corona.

Hoya kanlaonensis Kloppenburg,Siar & Ferreras has lance shaped leaves and small pinkish reflexed flowers that resemble many of the Acanthostemma section species.

At least one of these species was only found growing in a small area that is becoming increasingly fragmented by agriculture. Hopefully we see these new Hoya species introduced to the horticultural trade so that growers can help preserve them.

Mike, I especially liked the one with the purple leaf margins, I believe it was ferrarasii....with a beautiful bloom. I'm wondering if these hoya will be available through Forest Treasures/SRQ Hoya. It's amazing that all 5 were discovered by the same man/exployer. They all sound like they'd be great to add to one's collection, though some of them have rather small and uninteresting blooms. I do hope that these Hoyas become available and it looks like Forest Treasures might have one or two of them. The collector of these plants was Ulysses Ferreras and he is a member of the Philippine Native Plant Conservation Society so I am sure that these newly recorded species are being cultivated ex-situ.
I would love to grow any of these species but then again I do find the small flowered Hoya species to be just as interesting as the larger flowered ones.
