Request for updates for people growing H. lauterbachii

Hello everybody,

I haven't been to this forum in some time. Today I repotted my H. lauterbachii. I had not repotted it in probobly 4 years. I have had mine for at least five now. I finally found a window that it likes in my apartment and it started growing like crazy but no blooms yet.

I mainly grow tropical fruit trees, angel trumpets, and jades. This fall I had to buy a 600 watt HPS light to provide enough light for my trees since they were really starting to take off.

I have had a few people tell me that buying the HPS light for vegatative growth was a huge mistake because this light is designed to make plants bloom better. I guess it is the spectrum of light it produces. Anyhow, I moved my lauterbachii under it and it is growing much faster now. This light heats my room up to about 85 degrees and I am keeping my fingers crossed that with the heat and the intense light it provides, that maybe just maybe, it will bloom.

Has anyone had any luck with getting there's to bloom yet? It really bothers me that Logees sold this under there easy blooming category of plants. 6ft tall or 15ft tall, I would never consider this an easy to bloom plant!

I have heard that even the folks that grow this plant outside in Hawaii don't get this plant to bloom very often. One member said that when the plant got very large and one of the vines reached the top of the tree and started to trail down, that often that part of the vine would flower. H. lauterbachii certainly has spectacular flowers, but no one I've ever heard of has bloomed this plant in the house.

I just found out that my plant did not enjoy the dry heat coming form a nearby electric heater. I was hoping that by giving my plant the best light I could for the winter it would pull through. While watering this week I had to take two cuttings because the base of the plant had dried up.

I am pretty sure I was dreaming when I ordered this one. LOL

Hi Mike,
I know what you mean when you say you were sure you were dreaming when you bought this variety.

I honestly had no idea what I was getting myself into. I really thought it wasn't going to be hard to grow. I know hoyas can be finnicky but this one is just too much!

I d oknow that Carol from Hawaii said that hers bloomed one time and that was it. That really does speak volumes!!

What gets me is that I got ticked off at Logees and I emailed them. They actually told me that they had customers email them with pics of there blooming lauterbachii! I think they were full of s***!!

Haha, I'm sure if you had a lauterbachii that bloomed, you would send pictures to everyone you had ever known...

then put it in your Christmas letter, maybe start up a website... sell an ebook... claim it as a dependent on your taxes...

Maybe people should start sending Logees pictures of their unblooming lauterbachiis, to even out the sample.

Just thought you should know the H.lauterbachii that the Hawaiian grower you speak of posted pictures of her plant on another website when it bloomed again last month. Might be worth contacting her again and asking what the secret is to getting it to bloom.Her advice is usually dead on.
