Passing On The Love Of Hoyas

Hi everyone,

Is there anyone that you've convinced to grow a hoya to try and they've become a confirmed hoya "addict" like us?
I can certainly say that if it weren't for my home-ec teacher, I would have never found out about hoyas. As for me, I have introduced hoyas to all my friends and family.

A lady who works in the floral department at a local grocery store loves hoyas (I think she has two). Hers have never bloomed, like mine with the exception of lacunosa, and she'll be getting cuttings from me as well! Even people at the stores I talk to about hoyas and they even went to buy them! I'm thinking I may have to own a greenhouse someday lol :)

Sorry to ramble, it's just that I wanted to share how I feel about passing along a great love of mine (yours too, I'm sure).

From the other side of the fence...I blame you guys.

I was about 15 (?) when I saw my first Hoya blossom in a nursery, I was thrilled by it and later a friend of my mother's gave me a clipping from hers. I've been taking care of it for years now (nary a bloom) but I had never thought or realized that there were so many kinds of hoyas until I stumbled into this forum. I thought "Hoya, I already have that." and moved on. HA!

Now I'm a definite convert and even just ordered 4 hoyas from Gardino's in mid-Jan (amazingly they made it fine).

It's great and I think I'll be around here for a long time to come. Thanks!

Brad,

It wasn't specifically a Hoya that got me into plants, but a high school boyfriend's mother was a succulent nut and gave me offsets of several of her plants. The same boyfriend got me a Hoya (KP or KQ, can't remember) for Valentine's Day and it became my favorite plant. In about 1978, I subscribed to a really neat magazine called "Houseplants & Porch Gardens" - it wasn't around a long time, but I still have an article it had about Hoyas, complete with photos, and that's when I started dreaming about finding more. I found a few over the years, but it wasn't until I got online about 10 years ago that my collection really started to grow.

On the other end of it, I've gotten several people in my C&S club hooked on Hoyas. I can't really take the credit, per se, because (after all) who could resist once they see those flowers and the huge variability in the leaves?

I got my first Hoya (DS-70) other than Hoya carnosa from a very kind woman who sent me a surprise package of plant cuttings. That was about 8 or 9 years ago now and that little cutting grew and flowered after a few years and I was hooked. I have gotten most of my Hoyas in the last four or five years and met many other Hoya lovers in that time.

More recently I have been sharing Hoya cuttings with members of my local Orchid Society and they are proving to be very popular. Once people realize just how many Hoyas there are and just how beautiful they are it's all down hill from there. :)

Stacey I grow orchids including Bulbophyllum, Eria, Dendrobium, mini Phalaenopsis species, Brassavola and some random Asian species. I also grow Stapeliads and a few Ceropegias which are Hoya relatives. Aside from ornamental plants I also grow medicinal herbs both in containers and in my garden. If you are into Aquariums I also grow aquatic plants in planted tanks.

I never dreamed I'd become so addicted! A coworker told me about this beautiful waxy plant she saw called a hoya - I looked it up and couldn't believe the flowers. Couple of weeks later I bought my first one - brevialata- that was two and half years ago and I have somewhere around 110 now. ...despite that I'm getting more picky there are still more that I want!

I was hooked and facinated by the flowers after just one picture!

I have 4 small ones at the moment, and when my plant room is set up, will be getting more!

I can't wait for blooms! one has a tiny bud (cant remember the right term at moment..lol) starting!
