A little O.T., but relevant...

I've always been a little frustrated by the quandary of letting maximum light in my house while having privacy at night and pretty window treatments. Most curtains keep out too much light, but no curtains looks stark to my eyes. So I use blinds I can open fully, and most of my curtains are sheers. But I've discovered an alternative that adds that bit of pretty but blocks out no light. Rag garlands! I've bought them on Etsy and eBay, but I'm betting they're relatively easy to make, too. Here's the ones I just put in my spare bedroom.

Denise I love the topper look! Also your plants look great! I've never thought about hanging them like that and I looks very good! Do you have hooks under the new curtains for hang them on the rod? Love the look! TFS!

I have one hook in the middle at the top of each of my windows, then I hang the rest of them from the curtain rod, which the rag garland is wound around. I get nice, heavy curtain rods so I can hang several plants so there's no problem with weight when they're all watered. I use various size "S" hooks with chain to vary the height at which they hang to maximize how many I can get in front of each window. For the most part, I don't use any supplemental light, so I have to make the most of my natural light. I'm grateful that both of my neighbors have white houses, which gives me awesome reflected light all day. Maximizing the light is why I've gone to the rag garlands. Regular valances block out about a foot of the light at the top of the windows.

I always thought the solution was to put so many plants there that there wasn't a bare spot to peek through. ;)

Jk, I am SUPER paranoid about people looking through my windows at night. My sister laughs at me b/c I live in the middle of nowhere now, but old habits die hard... don't want those coyotes laughing at me!

It IS hard to find window treatments that don't block any light when they are open. I think I'm just going to end up hanging all my curtains "high and wide" and eating the extra expense, because it really gets my goat when there's a 4-5" lost on either side from curtain overhang. Boy, once you start paying for supplemental light, you don't want to miss out on drop of natural sunlight!

Anyway, love that you found an idea I haven't seen before. It seems like all I do these days is look at window treatments, so it's fun to discuss them with someone looking at them from a plant-functional perspective.
