Shepherdii Questions

Posted by moonwolf 6 (My Page) on

I couldn't take it, the gimmies have gotten to me and I bought shepherdii from Gardino's! Sent out the order today and anxiously waiting.

I have some questions about how to care for it.

Does it like to dry out b/t waterings? What is the fragrance like (I hear it's strong like lacunosa)? It will hang in a southern window. Is this too strong?

Brad, I'm always "Jonesing" for a hoya. I'm only satisfied when I get a new one (or two or eight) and soon after I'm wanting more. Is it okay to mail them now? It's the middle of Winter. Let me know...

RE: Shepherdii Questions

Tish,

When I e-mailed them yesterday, I asked if they could ship during this time of year, they said yes. I just hope my plant gets here before the weekend. I hear a storm is supposed to hit us then. There's no snow on the ground and it just looks awful without it. However, the sun's shining right now :)

I don't think Gardino's does, but some nurseries can add heat packs with your order. Check around to be sure, as I've never ordered in the middle of winter myself. Maybe someone else could tell you.

I looked at their website and if you choose to order in the Winter months, they are not guaranteed. They do have heat packs available. I think I'll wait, too much money to take a chance with...

RE: Shepherdii Questions

Brad,

Shepherdii would do better in another exposure, unless you plan to grow it back from the window a ways. Mine grows in a north window in my sun room and gets lots of bright indirect light from the east and south windows. With the exception of a few, I typically water my Hoyas before they get very dry. As for the fragrance, I don't think it's that strong - more like carnosa IMO.

Thanks, Denise!

I'll place it in my eastern facing bedroom window. It'll hang there with carnosa and a replacement for my Chelsea (a new hoya), which shall be going to a new home. So, then, just I'll grow shepherdii like carnosa.

Brad...I don't mean to be the "bearer of bad news", but, you're taking a huge risk having a hoya shipped this time of the year...it's too cold for hoyas!! Yes, Gardino's will ship anytime of the year...but, they will not guarantee their plants during the winter...for good reason! Also, Gardino's doesn't offer heat packs...dumb!! BTW, I ordered 5 or 6 hoyas from Gardino's the winter of 2008...Andrea told me that they were being shipped with "No guarantee"...she encouraged me to pay for express shipping...which I did...the package took 6 days to reach me and all of the hoyas arrived dead...a $100+ lesson I had to learn. Many plants, such as succulents, can be shipped year 'round...but, I'd encourage you to ask Andrea to hold off on shipping until the weather breaks...hoyas are too delicate. Just sharing my experience with you. Best wishes, Patrick

Patrick,

I hope you tried to get a refund. If you paid for express shipping and it took 6 days, I'd have gone after the P.O. or FedEx or whoever shipped it. I think overnight delivery would ensure safe arrival unless we're talking single digit temps. So I would not have let that one pass... I don't even think you would have had to pay insurance, though this time of year, I probably would.

I ordered 4 hoyas from Gardino's last week. I had to drive through an ice storm to get them but they were all just fine when I got them. Nice plants. And there was a large heat pack in the box.

RE: Shepherdii Questions

Hyenas, did you ask Andrea to include the heat pack or was it a nice surprise? I agree with Denise, that is one serious hoya addict!

RE: Shepherdii Questions

The heat pack was a surprise! A very appreciated one!

(Also, keep in mind that the plants were coming from FL to OK, so they never had to really venture north.)

RE: Shepherdii Questions

Andrea e-mailed me this morning to say that she can add a heat pack (after e-mailing her yesterday)!

Just recieved an e-mail that she'll ship the first thing next week! How long does it usually take for an order to reach you?

RE: Shepherdii Questions

Brad...expect to receive your hoya 2 days after it's been shipped. I'm very thankful that Gardino's now has heat packs...that would have saved me alot of grief last year!! Enjoy your new hoya, Brad...H. shepherdii is a wonderful hoya! Fondly, Patrick

Thanks, Patrick!

2 days?! Awesome! Shepherdii to me, is one of the coolest looking hoyas to grow. I read it's a frequent bloomer so that's a big plus for me!
