Compacta Questions

Posted by moonwolf 6 (My Page) on

Hi everyone,

How's everyone doing in spite of this wild winter weather?

I have a concern about compacta. I really adore it but have not tried it after my mealie battle on lacunosa. I saw it at Lowe's back in June (EA plant) and it looked really healthy. If I find one, I'll give it a shot. Is there any way of growing it without it getting mealies? I could grow it in a seperate place without being surrounded by other hoyas/houseplants. What should I do?

Brad,

Since I started growing it again (after having given up many years ago), I grow it in a spot where there are no other plants nearby, and I treat it with BATS every 6 months as a precaution. So far, so good!

That's good, Denise!

Did yours ever bloom? If I ever find one again, I'll snatch it up! Is your compacta an EA?

RE: Compacta Questions

Yes, it's an EA, and no, it hasn't bloomed for me yet. I'm not sure I'm terribly enthralled with it yet as the leaves are so much smaller than the ones on a typical compacta. I don't know if it's the clone or what. My sis has one that has big-honkin' leaves and I like that one a lot. I'm growing mine in lower light conditions hoping new growth will be bigger... guess we'll see!

RE: Compacta Questions

Brad,

I have a medium size compacta I started for 3 small cuttings oh, maybe 2 years ago. I like my plants to be full and symetrical so when one vine gets long enough to cut, I do so and stick it back in the pot with the mother plant. So it's not quite as long as it could be without the 3 haircuts. I re-potted it Monday, just becasue it wasn't in the good chunky soli mix I use now and was staying wetter than I prefer. So, now I can leave it alone and let it grow to its hearts content.

I was under the impression compactas aren't so much mealie magnets as they are a mealie hide-out. With the crooks and crevices, mealies are hard to spot, until you see decline in the plant and then figure out it is fully infested with the lil buggers. I could be wrong on that tho.

I think if it were me, I'd trade cuttings and start it yourself, and not take any chances with transporting critters into your collection. They root so darn easy and for me grow fast. (Just my thoughts).

Maid, I did get offered cuttings by a nice member on here! I'm really running out of room and just made a space for my new shepherdii. Space is definitely an issue for my hoyas and I really can't get anymore for now. However, when I do have room for new plants, then I'll add more. Remember what Denise said, when taking care of them gets to be work, then you have too many!
