    Thanks GG, Nofaves and Kelly!

GG, the Finlaysonii blooms changed color this morning...its gotten much darker pink. It is a cool bloom and I like how you describe it. I hope your nicholsoniae starts to put out some new leaves soon.

    Kelly...just for you :o)

Everyone, they are just beautiful, but Puglvr, that finlaysonii, with the pinker color is just gorgeous. I'm going to have to track one of them down.

Thanks Lisa, we must have been posting at about the same time, sorry, I just now saw your post.

David, I have NO idea what clone that Pottsii is...I received it as a NOID cutting on a trade and later was ID's here as Pottsii.

Renne, that is the same finlaysonii bloom I posted that was cream color a couple days ago. The only thing that might have made the bloom turn darker could be the dappled direct sun it gets a couple of hours in the late afternoon? The blooms on this one doesn't last long at all...maybe 2-3 days. Could be our heat...its already in the low 90's here for the last couple of weeks.

Pug those are all beautiful but I find myself drawn to those soft yellow Hoya nicholsoniae blooms. Can I ask how large your plant was before it started to develop peduncles?

    Good growing!

My Hoya wayettii is blooming so I took a couple photos, nothing spectacular.

Thanks Josh, I bet yours will bloom soon.

Kelly, Max is just a ham...anything for a picture :o)
That was actually taken several weeks ago when it was cold...its been in the 90's lately so he doesn't need his blanket anymore,lol...

Mike, my Nicholsoniae took a long time to bloom. It was quite large before I ever got my first peduncle last summer or fall? I remembered thinking when this thing would ever bloom since it certainly looked mature and large enough to do so. I have two buds now and a third peduncle is forming. Its been a stingy bloomer till now.

That wayetti picture is awesome! I love the way the nectar is almost dripping from it. Very Cool!

/Pug Love the color changes on the blooms. You're really getting full value out of this display!

/Mike I also love pictures of dripping nectar.

Well winter is FINALLY gone and the weather is suitable for me to move the hoyas outside once again!!! I've spent 3 of the past 4 evenings and 1 entire day getting all of the hoyas moved back outside under the shade house. That has been a job!!!! I've got everything out and organized now so today I took a few pics of some things that were open.

First is H. pottsii "Chiang Mai"

    H. vitiensis

    H. obovata

    H. rigida IML 1424 these flowers had just popped open when I happened to walk past them. They looked so cool I said this is the perfect time to get their picture!!!

  • greedygh0st

That rigida is just spectacular. What a great picture! Now I am looking forward to mine blooming even more. /thrill

Doesn't vitiensis have the most hilarious blooms? They all look like they're trying to avoid something, like a toddler struggling to step over a puddle or someone lifting their feet off the floor at the sight of a bug. They put me in mind of Maggie Simpson in her snowsuit.

David I agree that Hoya rigida is amazing. It was sunny and 21C (about 70F) here today so we are getting closer and closer to more consistent daytime temperatures.

Great pictures David!! I also have to chime in and say how awesome that Rigida bloom is. I'm hoping to get a rooted cutting of Rigida from a friend this summer...can't wait!

Josh, I love your Obovata blooms...SO pretty!

My meliflua openeed this morning...the bloom isn't very big but the color makes up for the size.

  • greedygh0st

Oh wow, those are some gorgeous hues, Pug. Makes me feel one step closer to a tropical paradise just to look at them. I just love meliflua for the way its nectar stains the blooms, too.

Josh I like your obovata!!! I have noticed on my plant some of the blooms are quite pink like yours and then again some appear to be more white.I like its' lite sweet fragrance.

Nancy,if this is the first time your meliflua has bloomed watch it for dripping nectar. After a day or two it forms large drops of nectar on all of the flowers.

GG I like the vitiensis /snowsuit comparison. I checked out the link and the flowers actually do look like the pink and yellow suite at the top of the page!!! I also have the yellow clone of vitiensis but am still waiting to see blooms. The plant formed some peduncles last year so maybe this year they'll do something.

  • mdahms1979

Pug those blooms are just so cool looking. Out of all the plants in this section I really only find Hoya meliflua to be interesting enough to grow and that's because of the way the nectar stains the flowers. My plant was very fussy as a cutting for some reason but it's pretty big now so hopefully I will be able to bloom it.
Do you notice any scent from the blooms?

    Thanks!!

    Josh, Yum...strawberry dessert!

Thanks for the warning David...actually I'm good since I grow this one outside. I also have my Kerrii growing outside and heard that they also have the reputation of nectar dripping/staining. My Kerrii's budding for the very first time since I've had it.

GG, I will try and get a photo if the nectar stains the blooms.

Mike, I had to put my nose right up to it and I barely smell anything...maybe tonight I will try again.

Cyclonenat, I can imagine how frustrating it is not to be able to buy hoyas that aren't common.

    Thanks Pepeuve and Kelly!

/dmichael YAY At least one person doesn't think I've lost my mind. ^_^ /dance

Can't wait to see the yellow vitiensis. It has a really special purple shade, but I think the yellow is a great fit for that style of bloom. They are both so awesome!

/Mike I recently received a meliflua cutting that has been extremely robust, but meliflua ssp. fraterna gave me a lot of problems ... was down to a stick. Lately, I had this "good feeling" about it and this morning I noticed it's putting out some new growth at the top. /cheer

/Pepeuve To post photos here, you copy and paste the html code right into the message box.

    Example:

    <img src="http://www.ibdguy.com/images/hoglogo2.gif">;

You can put width="300" height="400" before the last ">" to control the size. Like this:

Usually, you can copy and paste this code directly from your photo host, but if you know the url for the photo, you can do it manually (as above).

    Hope this helps!

    Hi puglvr1:

I have seen a new peduncle in your photo.
It is in the corner, on top, on the left.

It is de first time because:
    the first: stem
    secong : knotgrass
    third: peduncle
    and then: leaves

    An example

Pug, Very nice flowers on your meliflua, the flowers are so beautiful.
I must be doing something wrong with mine,Its huge and grows and grows but no flowers.I also have meliflua ssp. fraterna but its only about a third of its size,it grows slower than meliflua.I guess I will have to be happy looking at yours.LOL

Cindy I am having the opposite problem as you, my fraterna is quite large with what looks like peduncles forming - 1st time yah, my meliflua keeps dying off, it was huge last year but then got too wet when we had alot of rain and couldn't seem to recover but did bloom, this year it is struggling to put out any new growth, maybe I need to snip it and start again.

Thanks Cindy! I don't think you're doing anything wrong. I've noticed it took mine a while before getting peduncles...the plant was pretty large before it gave me any...I too started thinking what was wrong with this hoya that it was large enough but didn't bloom...soon after it finally started to produce some. Hang in there...

Dee, good luck with the peduncle on your Fraterna, and hope your meliflua recovers.

I love absolutely love all of the hoya blooms, but the one that draws my eye back to it, every single time is the Pubicalyx 'chimera'. I absolutely Must get that one! LoL

Can anyone explain the scent of this one? Pretty please? =)

Also, anyone want to describe the scent of Hoya nummularioides? My DD and I both love the scent of this one but according to my DH, my MIL has a reaction to it. I wasn't here when she came to the home to help with the wood flooring install. So I didn't see the reaction. I know for a fact the crazy woman believes my plants take oxygen from the air, so she thinks I ought to get rid of my plants. LOL I refuse to. I go the passive aggressive route and purchase another every time she makes a remark about it. ;) Yeah, yeah, I know... Not nice. Hehe!

Anyway, Absolutely beautiful pictures of your hoyas my friends! Keep it up! I truly love them and really need the cheer so please share them! =)

Hello, all Hoya experts out there,
I have a beautiful Hoya Obovata plant that is about 3 years old. He is healthy, and puts out large, beautiful leaves. But he has never bloomed for me.
It's sitting on a north facing window sill, and I feed him diluted Elanor's plant food each time. What do I need to do to help him bloom? Please help. Thank you.

  • puglvr1

Try giving it more light...not direct sun or you will burn the leaves...do you have a place near a south window that is protected by a sheer curtain or mini blinds? Where it will get bright indirect light? I would also give it some all purpose fertilizer in half strength every couple of weeks or so during the summer. Good luck!!

    Puglvr1,
thank you much for your suggestion. I shall follow them. Might be too late for this year to see any results from this, do you think?

  • greedygh0st

It usually takes until the following year for me to see the results of moving a mature Hoya to a sunnier location.

I think it depends on the plant and how much extra energy the new location provides, though.

Some Hoyas can bloom from north windows, but not all will. They are very greedy for light. ;)
