Earlier someone asked me to post a picture of my Hoya shelf I made useing two of my plant stands and a heavy wire shelf I bought at Lowes.
It has a up lip on the back side which keeps the pots from slideing off and a down lip on the front which keeps the shelf on the plant stands.
It's 6'x16" and I have 21 pots of Hoya setting on it.

Jo, looks great!! looks like an indoor jungle.

RE: My Hoya shelf

Hey Jan here in Ks we make our jungles wherever we can, it's so windy outside most of the time I hate to put my Hoya outside.
I even have a little frog inside, he came in last fall with my plants and I can't seem to find him to take him outside, I just hear him and when I go looking he's quiet.
My husband seems to think he's finding plenty to eat to last this long.
He's in my basement where I have plant lights so there probally are plenty of bugs down there.

Linda the shelving comes in a couple colors but I think this color seems to be the less visable. It comes in differant lengths and widths.

Hey Jo,

Awsome!!!! All those hoyas, do you ever find it tough to water? I do at times, they are just so darn crowded on my three tables in my living-room that I have to be extremely careful not to knock one of them over because of all the stakes and/or trellus' on them. You have me wanting to take pic's of my tables for everyone to see, it's nothing fancy I just love seeing how everyone else has their hoyas arranged. If I get time tonight I will take some pics and post tomorrow, I also have a bloom and a new peduncle with buds to photo. Thanks for posting the photos, I really enjoyed them. My hubby is going fishing today since he got rained out of work and maybe he will stay gone long enough for me to mess with my plants for a few hours tonight. :-)

RE: My Hoya shelf

Very nice set up and beautiful plants, prime real estate next to windows...One thing about living in Fl, most of my plants are outside, bring it in only on the rare occasions of freeze in the winter or hurricanes in the summer, LOL...

Enjoy your lovely plants!

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

I love your display, Jo. I was wondering the same as Shanna....isn't it hard to water? I see you have some plants on your furniture - I also keep my hoyas on wooden furniture, and you just can't be too careful when watering, huh? I'm sure there are many water stains under my plants!
Thanks for sharing :)

Gabi

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

It's not really hard to water, I just move a couple of the front ones and use a small watering can with a long spout. I have coasters under the pots on the table and I'm really careful to wipe up any water I spill.

I really like having most of my smaller setting ones all together and my smaller hanging ones are above these and the larger ones are in another window.

I injoy seeing how others display there plants so please if anyone wants to share, I'd love to see your pictures.

Here's my hoya set up....
Eastern Window-
Hoya Table, East Window

Full Picture of my "new" table my husband made me for my plants. I would like to put a light under the top shelf for hoyas so I could have hoyas sit on the second shelf too, what kind of setup do you suggest (cheap but good for my hoyas)
Table my hubby made me

Southern Window (Left side)
Hoya Table, Southern Window-Left side

Southern Window - Right Side. (There is a love seat that sits infront of the window between the tables.) I tried suggesting moving the love seat to the other side of the room (where there are no windows) so I could have window room for more tables of hoyas, hubby didn't go for that. :-) But I will keep trying...
Southern Window table-right side
I have closer pictures of the hoyas if anyone wants me to post them, just let me know.

I have a wall hanger infront of a southern window with my H. numm and a small KQ hanging in my kitchen window with a hook (Southern window too)

Thanks for looking at my setup, hope you enjoyed it.

RE: My Hoya shelf

It's very interesting to look at your set-ups, Jo and Shanna. You must be in paradise having your plants right next to you inside the house where you can look at them day and night!

In my climate, I keep all plants outside and bring them in when they bloom. I want to keep them inside, too, so I can look at them all the time but I'm afraid they won't grow as well.

Thank you for sharing your plant growing areas. I really enjoy looking at your displays.

Hi all..I very much like seeing how you all have your hoyas. I thought I would show you all, my hoya plant poles

hope you like them, this is a south window in my living room right now the eaves shadow the window and I just pull the sheer curtains want the sun gets to hot....linda

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

I used to only have my sunroom, which I was (and still am) grateful for. And I still have quite a few Hoyas growing in there - they seem to like the bright indirect light they get in there. But most of my plants are now in the GH, which is off my kitchen. It faces east so gets lots of great morning sun. I use those wire shelves that they sell at Sam's and they work great. Here's looking to the back of my GH, north side, where I have the trellis that australis and macguillvrayii grow on...

And one looking towards the south - that's one of the wire shelves (I have 4 in there...)
Image Hosting by PictureTrail.com

And one looking northeast, showing 2 more of the shelves...

It's not air conditioned out there, so in summer, the windows are wide open and it's hot and humid, so they seem to love it as if they're outside, but without the wind and bugs.

RE: My Hoya shelf

Hi Denise, great pictures, you have so many beautiful plants you must have a very green thumb. I would love to have a green house, maybe some day..I am putting in a garden window in the family room soon, just waiting for the contactor to do it..

RE: My Hoya shelf

oh, I can't wait to have my own little greenhouse. That would be heaven. The difference between my plants that grow in the dark windows of my house and the ones that grow in the atrium that is our foyer (skylights) is phenomenal.

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

WOW---love seeing your pics everyone! I am so dang jealous that you have a greenhouse Denise. While I have bright sun in all my windows (my house is new construction and there's no trees shading the windows), my hoyas are not exactly growing in leaps and bounds. They are putting out a small amount of new growth, but here in MN they don't really seem to *thrive*. Or maybe it's just me! I will say my lacunosa is budding up, but so far that's my only one (and I'll take it!). :)

Hoya hugs to all!

 o
RE: Hoya's in MN

Hey emerald---I see you're from MN too! It's rare to find another hoya lover in my area---do live near Rochester?

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Hi shiver, Belle Plaine is where I live about 30 miles southwest of Minneapolis..so I would guess about 70 miles from you give or take a few from you..Rocherter is a beautiful city I have been there a few times.
Denise nice license plate :)
And I agree this is a good thread..to everyone, great pictures and comments too..linda

 o
RE: Mpls

Ah, so you're closer to Mpls, Linda. I'm jealous! Rochester may be a beautiful city, but there are no good places here to buy plants! My hubby will be taking me up to Bachman's flagship store in a couple weeks, which is a long way to drive for plants (but worth it to me). It's the only option I have if I don't want anymore of the standard philos and pothos....

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

shiver, I have been to bachmans in eden prairie, and apply valley, but they didn't have very much at all, mostly orchids, what is the flagship store like do they lots to choose from?? I mostly find house plants at wal-mart and home depot and lowes theres a few little green houses that I go to once in a while, but they have as you said the standards. I've been looking all over for house plants..their hard to find. I posted a thread here in the minnesota forum, one posted about a small green house in north mpls... the best place to see and look at house plants is ebay...but then you have the postage too.. linda

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

I've been to the Bachman's in Apple Valley & Eden Prairie too, but those don't have *near* the selection as the Flagship store on Lyndale Ave (in Mpls). It is really worth the trip to go there if you haven't done it yet---the plants are of excellent quality, huge selection, and rarely do I find spider mites on their stock (an important consideration for me personally, as mites are my nemesis). Their prices are cheaper than Rochester too...

I've seen a few standard hoyas there (like carnosa), but they never seem to have any of the more unusual/interesting types of hoyas. :( Otherwise there is a wide selection of general houseplants----I really like that they have a lot of different anthuriums there. Otherwise, MN just s*cks when it comes to indoor plants! :(

Great Photos. Nice to see how others keep their plants. Here in the desert mine are mostly outside on the patio which is covered but they have to come in to south-facing windows in winter as it does freeze here.

Where do you buy the bamboo "wickets" you use for support. I have never seen them for sale in this neck of the woods.

Thanks.

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

hi ks-girl..WOW!!! you have fanastic plants and Denise and shanna too, everyone..I counted all my plants a while back and I counted 80 plants, and some arround here said I was crazy to have so many, well I don't hold a candle to all of you, not that I wouldn't want to catch up ;) the pictures are great and fun to see, thank you all again for sharing....linda

RE: My Hoya shelf

sonoranguy, if you're asking about the bamboo hoops, I get them at a couple nurseries in KC, they come in several differant size's and the ones I use are 24" but sometimes I cut them down to whatever size I need, and the bamboo trellis I get at Lowe's.

Thanks emerald and if you're crazy than I'm way beyond help!

RE: My Hoya shelf

Ks-Girl... Where did you get that black wrought iron hanging plant stand???!!! I've seen one just like it at my local Baker's Grocery Store (a subsideriary of Krogers) and I've asked and asked where I can buy one. No one knows! And I've looked all over the internet and can't find one. I just love the look of it...

Linda... I'm "down to" about 330 different species of plants I grow (that doesn't count duplicates), and that includes my Hoyas (about 25% of what I grow) and other succulents. I was up to around 450 at one time, and I need to further downsize my succulent collection before fall... It just gets to be too much if you're not careful, but it's so HARD to be discerning when there are SOOO many interesting, weird and lovable plants out there!! I belong to a local cactus & succulent plant club and I so envy the older members who are retired and have lots of time to spend with their plants... It's my greatest enticement to work towards retirement!

Denise,
You took the words right out of my mouth - where did that stand come from?

Everyone's pictures are fabulous!

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Denise & Kelly, I found the hanging plant trees on ebay about 3 years ago from Homier Distributing Co and got 3 of them.
Last year they had some outside ones that sticks in the ground so I got some of those also and this year I noticed they have some inside ones that hold 4 plants where mine hold 8.
Since I have hundreds of plants I'm always looking for ways to display them and hanging ones are the most challenging, after all one can only put so many holes in the ceiling.

I also have 3 of the old fashioned brass poles like someone else on here had in their pictures but those are hard to come by anymore unless you're willing to pay big time for them.

The large setting metal stand is a find of a life time, Hobby Lobby had it years ago for $99. and I fell in love with it but wasn't about to pay that price and even when it went 40% off I still didn't get it and the next time I checked it was 80% off so I had to have it and when I asked about it to make sure it was included in the sale they said it was and that it was an additional 80% off the marked down price which made it around $4.00
I couldn't beleive it, I forgot about any other shopping, I wasn't going to leave it's side and let someone else grab it up.
It holds 13 pots.

Keep checking Homier Distributing Co, they always seem to have some kind of plant pole listed and a lot of the same style so you can get more than one if you want.

Jo,

The shelf you got for $4 - is that the one in the 2nd picture towards the right?!?!? What an AMAZING find! Good for you for holding out!

Do you have a picture of the stand you picked up at Big Lots? I'd love to see it!

In the meantime I'm still on the hunt!

RE: My Hoya shelf

Kelly, yes that's my $4. shelf and it holds 13 pots. You just never know what you'll find if you keep looking.

I think it's great seeing how everyone displays their plants, thanks everyone for showing us your pictures. Jo

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

I am so enjoying looking at all the different set-ups! Thanks so much for sharing!

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Kelly,
I don't have many hoyas. I mostly grow Epiphyllum and Rhipsalis.

Here is my plant tree, it holds 12 plants in about a 4.5 X 4.5 ft square. It comes apart into 4 pieces, the stand and the three tiers of hangers.

The other end of my porch, I just got a roof on my porch last week and my plants have been enjoying the outdoors ever since. The epies have been tanning nicely, I love the reddish veining they have been getting from the late afternoon sun. I have noticed a couple hoya leaves which have burned so I moved them further back on the tree and that took care of the problem.

I even have a blooming penduncle, I have been waiting impatiently for this to open, but it didn't want to inside the house. It hadn't been an hour outside before I noticed it had opened.

Hoya multiflora

(The beer bottles are for Becky's famous beer fertilizer, which I might add works when I think to make some up. I dulute it way more than what she suggests, though.)

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Mentha I like your plant tree. Our Big Lots closed a couple years ago, I liked going there once in a while, you never know what you might find.

You gotta love Multiflora, mine has been blooming for probally 3 months now. Somewhere I saw a picture of one with green flowers, I'd love to find that one also.

I went shopping today for one of those metal shelving units to put in my shadehouse, I love those. I found one and on sale and also a variegated Hoya Polyneura with tiny penduncles. Jo

RE: My Hoya shelf

Hi all,
This is the best thread, everyones pictures are GREAT!!!
it is so neat to look in at everyones plants, and yes the pots and plant stands. What I really like is seeing all the hoya at so many different stages of growth..little starters and huge plants that are I don't know how old, they are so great...I just had to post again a, "BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!!!" linda

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Gabi where did the caudata come from if you don't mind telling - and I hate to ask, but in picture number 10, bottom left - is that what I think it is?

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Jennifer,

YES that's what you think it is....the beautiful serpens from Meadowbrook :(
I'm so ashamed. It was HUGE with hundreds of peduncles, and it "almost" died over the winter. There are only a few healthy strands left and no peduncles. Sad. When I finally took it out of it's original rusty pot, I saw that it was COMPLETELY rootbound...no soil at all. That was probably the problem. So I potted it up into a bigger pot with more soil. It is finally starting to grow again.

As for the caudata. If you remember, I got one from Asiatica. That one hasn't grown much, and I then saw this new caudata on Ebay (from Fatplants), and had to have it. I just love the size of it.

Gabi

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

my Asiatica plants haven't done much growing either. As for the serpens, yes it is sad, but from what I hear pretty common. I do not like the mix that Meadowbrook used for their hoyas, maybe it is more managable in the small or clay pots, but the loheri and the sigillatis I got, same size pots as your serpens, could definately use a more well draining mix, one that stays less wet. I am a little worried about sigillatis, more so than loheri, but am out of orchid bark. I may get some today and not necessarily repot, but change out most of the soil with lots of bark and some clay aggregate.

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

I agree. The smaller clay pots I got are doing fine. Well, the variegated macrophylla is the only one that is growing (and I mean GROWING....there is a new vine almost every day, with tons of new leaves per week!) - it's been growing non-stop since I got it. The rigida is slowly growing. But the sigillatis has done NOTHING. Either way, they are all healthy in the mix. So I agree, the smaller pots seem to be fine, but not the big ones. That mix is just too wet. I'm sorry about your sigillatis...I know how excited you were about it. Hopefully it will come through once you change the mix (I waited too long on my serpens as you can see, but once I repotted it, it began to recover).

Gabi-

WOW!!! Mine has been a slowwwww grower! That's beautiful!

The planter is cool! It's an old concrete planter I got at a flea market.

The kitty is Mylo Barkley Gunner III. Mylo - there were drinks involved in the naming process as my sister had just come to town, Barkley - after Charles Barkley, Gunner - after Tim Gunn and III - again there were a couple of drinks involved! Mylo is a trip! A while back ago he was fascinated with watching me fill gallon jugs with water from the aquarium (water for the hoyas). Suddenly he "hugged" the water the jug and when he let go water started spurting out all over the place! It was hilarious! Never would I have guessed he would actually puncture the jug! Here's another picture of him - not the greatest picture, but the expression is very typical!

Cute kitty, does he bother your hoyas?

Gabi
Impressive growth on your v. mac. I really love mine too, mine is growing at a good rate too. I ordered the solid mac, caudata(rooted) and cv. joy last week should be here tomorrow or Thursday from Awanda. From Asatica also ordered your cute little lyi, deykeae and palawanica. One from ebay verigated verticillata (queenphish). Pretty excited about these hoyas.

shanna

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Nice purchases Shanna. You are really building up your collection! I'd love to see pics when you get them.

As for my Asiatica plants, they don't seem to grow! There is one new leaf on lyi (which I think is actually H. sp. Square), and none on the australis 'Rupicola' or the other australis. The caudata I got from them has done nothing, and since I love that plant so much I got one off Ebay from Fatplants recently. It's a very nice sized healthy plant. But I don't know why the plants from Asiatica don't grow! I finally changed the soil to my own, so we'll see if that helps. A few years ago, I got pachyclada from them, and it has grown tremendously (after I put it into my own mix)..so maybe that's the ticket. Good luck with yours.

Here's a pic of the one I got off of ebay labeled H. verigated verticillata

H. verigated verticillata

H. verigated verticillata

I'm curious as to why asatica's plants don't seem to grow? I have had quite a few that have just sat there for over 6 months (so I have developed patients within the last year). I also love caudata, I was admiring your picture of the new caudata you got off of ebay. I also have one caudata I got from smoley, it came with 3 leaves on two shorter vines, one leaf fell off in shipping and that vine is gone. The other two leaves seem to be doing ok, I wasn't happy with the size so I ordered another caudata from Awanda that is rooted. I believe the 2 other hoyas I got from her are cuttings but not sure. Hopefully my new caudata will be bigger than my first one.

Question about soil?... Is there different sizes of orchid bark? Can I just mix small cut orchid bark and perlite then leave what soil stays on the roots and call it good? I think I will change the soil when I get those little babbies in.

shanna

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Shanna,

I can't see your pic since I'm at work, but I'm looking forward to seeing it when I get home.

About the soil, Asiatica is mostly or all coir (I believe), so if you mix in orchid bark and perlite, there will be no potting soil...not saying that's a bad thing, but I'm not used to that. When I repotted the ones from Asiatica, I left whatever coir stayed on the roots, and filled the rest of the pot with my mix....I didn't dare try to pull the coir off. The pachyclada that I've had for awhile is doing great, so I know there is no problem if you do it that way.

What do you think of carol's soil mix? Did you repot your hoyas from her? I have left them in her mix but did have to repot some of the second order I got b/c a few of them had leaves that were turning yellow, changing the mix did help THANK GOD!!! (as much money as I spend I sure didn't want to loose them). I need to take a weekend and repot what hoyas needed to be repotted either down in size or out of EA mix and into my own (which is not consistent, I don't think). I'm pretty sure my EA curtsii needs to be repotted, I can't take of the bottom saucer off b/c it is hanging and the water would drip on the floor but when I bought it I tried to take it off before I knew where I wanted to put it but I saw roots coming out the bottom....

I wouldn't have touched the roots either, sure as I did I would have doomed my pretty lil' plant.

I will post more pic's when the others come in.

shanna

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Shanna,

No, I don't repot the hoyas from Carol. I like her mix, even though it dries out fast. I will repot them in my own mix when they need repotting.

As for your EA curtisii, I would definitely remove the saucer off any EA plant. I hang mine in my carpeted room, but I just water in the bathtub. It makes a huge difference to take off the saucer...I haven't lost a single EA plant since doing that. Just something to keep in mind - everytime I repotted an EA hoya into my own mix, it died or didn't thrive too well. So be careful. I've just learned to deal with the muddy soil (I make sure they are fully dry before watering).

I got an EA plant once with roots sticking out of the bottom..I just repotted it in a pot with the same diameter but a little deeper. I didn't change the soil...just put a layer of my own in the bottom to fill up the pot.

RE: My Hoya shelf

Mylo Barkley Gunner III is about 10 months old. The photo was taken a couple of months ago. Mylo likes playing soccer in the hallway (although he tends to bump his head a lot...could account for the expression in the photo), wrestling, "doing hair" (he'll knead your head given the opportunity), announcing when he's going to use the litter box, playing with his "sister" Notorious Lil' Gi, and occasionally taking a bite out of a hoya. Fortunately hoyas are bitter, yet harmless, so damage is minor. For the most part he doesn't mess with them anymore unless one happens to be dangling in his face. Gigi on the other hand....

I've had mixed results with Asiatica plant growth - lyi has taken off, as has buotii. Davidcummingii has had modest growth. Caudata just put on a new leaf and I think anything else from there is standing still at the moment.

Shanna- get that bottom off of curtisii! I'm with Gabi- those bottoms are dangerous with that soil mix. I just took some serious cuttings from my curtisii. Purchased it a couple of months ago and the mix is STILL damp and I've not watered it once. Did make the mistake of setting the hanging pot flat rather than hanging it - probably limiting it's opportunity to dry. Looking very sad at the moment! Have read it's not the easiest to root. Hoping that's not true!

Kelly

RE: My Hoya shelf

I asked Barry at Asiatica about the mix, though I like that it is fast draining, what kind of nutrients could it possibly have? And maybe lack of them is why none of us are getting much growth. Of the four plants I got last year, two have gotten one leaf, another has gotten three, and dcummingii is the only one that got more than I could count, though I wouldn't say more than a handful. Two have bloomed, both dcummingii and an unknown pottsii/parasitica.

Barry said that he fed regularly, possibly with every watering, both the foliage and the pots, so I thought maybe that was the ticket for more growth, but I DO fertilize lightly with each watering - and still have not seen much in the way of results. I am thinking about repotting with a mix that contains a little more soil, the orchid bark, the perlite, styrafoam, and clay aggregate.

Kelly and Gabi.
Okay, I will take the bottom saucer off curtsii and also numm (EA)

Question-- If I water with VF-11 with every watering do I still need to be using something else? Fertilizer? Bloom booster etc? FYI - I haven't been.

Can you both post a pic of your lyi?

RE: My Hoya shelf

Shanna,

I only water with Eleanor's (with every watering). However, when I remember, I'll water with a bloom booster (usually a couple of times during the summer...maybe once a month IF I remember!). When I use the bloom booster, I do not use the Eleanor's.

But honestly, I really don't think you need anything other than Eleanor's - it's great stuff. I just use the bloom booster once in a while just to do something different.

Here's my H. lyi from Asiatica:

So that's your mix in the lyi and a smaller pot, what size?

thanks for posting the pic, it's so cute. ((So little of a plant for so much money.)) :-)

RE: My Hoya shelf

Shanna,

No, that's not my mix. It seems like it's coir, bark, and some perlite. That's the only one from Asiatica that I didn't repot yet (but will do it soon).

Not sure how big the pot is (that's the pot it came in).

Gabi

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Ines,

It's not the coir they use, unless they're not feeding their plants. I've been using coir for a few years now and my Hoyas (and others...) are doing better than ever. A commercial grower who's a member of our local C&S club turned me on to coir, and what really impressed me was that he said it doesn't "break down" like regular potting mix. He did say you have to feed regularly because coir has no nutrients in it whatsoever. So I've always used VF-11 (and now and then SuperThrive) at every watering. You just have to commit to ALWAYS feeding. It's worth it, though, because I no longer have to repot, repot, repot every 6 months to a year...

I asked because the pots mine came in looked like an orchid pots (with the holes in the sides, 2 layers). My pots were 3 1/2" round.

Denise can you buy coir at Lowes?

shanna

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Shanna, you should be able to buy coir at any pond store. Lowes might carry it, I know my local HD doesn't.

Gabi,
There was someone who just posted a picture of blooms of Square at epiforums, it sure is a cutie. Your lyi is adorable. I like the smaller leaved hoyas. Too bad they require more care than your ol' carnosa and pubicalyx does.

RE: My Hoya shelf

Denise I fertilize with a weak solution with every watering from April to October, and then maybe every month in the off season if I remember, so it isn't a hardship for me to do it. I would like to try coir, I will have to revisit the older threads where it is discussed in detail - I remember there is a really salty one that you should avoid. Where do you get it, if you don't mind my asking?

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Jo, I love that you started this thread showing where you grow all of your hoyas. I love your hoya shelf. Do you know what you will do when all of them get huge?

Shanna, and Linda, I love seeing that others are willing to completely obscure their views out the window in the best interest of their beloved plants! Ha, sometimes I feel absolutely guilty that every window in my home is covered, but hey, we all have our priorities!

Denise, I am absolutely jealous of your greenhouse. I am jealous of your sun-room that you used to grow your hoyas in too, I don't have either, and just keep adding a hook, and a trellis, and a plant stand.......It is really starting to become "wall to wall".

Kelly, your hoyas look great, and Mylo is absolutely adorable!

Gabi, it looks like you are fast filling up your hoya spaces...your tables are positively overflowing with hoyas.

I took a few pictures, posting pictures here is new for me, so sorry everyone if they are too huge, too small, or just don't work.....

RE: My Hoya shelf

Oh my gosh, Sara! You have some amazing hoyas! What kind of exposure are they getting? It looks like some of them are hanging sort of above window level - what's your experience with hoyas needing less light? I'm constantly wondering what I'm going to do when my guys "grow up" and I run out of window space.
Also - the hangers! Where did you get the cool metal chains that wrap around the pots and what appears to be wire maybe?
That linearis is amazing! I just received some cuttings and am keeping my fingers crossed!
This really is a great thread!

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Good Morning Kelly,

My hoyas get the gamut of exposure of full on west and south sun in the windows, to almost none for the ones that are above the fireplace against the wall. I do have huge picture windows, and have come to the conclusion for MY hoyas that all the direct sun that everyone seems to think that they need to bloom is just not the case.

My subquintuplinervis is literally growing in a corner, and it is the most faithful bloomer I have. (second picture from the bottom, green planter on the corner shelf.)

I think that they just bloom when they are ready. This year I have more blooms than I ever have before, and the weather here has been ODD!! Ha! Maybe it has to do with air pressure more than sun?

Kelly, I buy the package of chain at Walmart - something like 20 feet for $6, and it comes with "S" hooks. It is really easy to open the links with pliers, and just grab as much as you need, and pinch it off. The stuff that looks like wire, that I am hanging with is hemp cord. You can get that in any jewelry section. I like it because it makes a thinner hanger, and I just make them up really fast when I get a new plant, or find a new hanging space.

RE: My Hoya shelf

Sara, Lovely plants I especially like how you use the decorative pots, it really adds interest to the plants.

What is that really big leaf one in the third picture, I really like that one.

I'm also really glad I started this thread, it's lots of fun seeing how others display their Hoya and we can all get new ideas in the process.

And as for what I'll do when all my plants on the shelf grows well I'll deal with that when the time comes
HEY! I COULD ALWAYS USE ONE LESS PIECE OF FURNITURE! Jo

Sara

I don't think I am breathing I'm in such awe!!!! I would love to take a tour of your house except I don't think you could get me to leave. I am assuming the giant hoya is carnosa, in the white pedastole pot?

So I got a question for ya, does your hubby just let you put your hoyas anywhere? Holes in the celing, plant stand here and there? Mine wouldn't let me do the celing hanger so I got the wall hangers and he put those up for me (in a stud wall of course). Has it been hard finding plant stands and such? I noticed you have a lot. Do you usually find them on sale or just pay asking price when you find what you want. Thank you so much for posting the pictures and giving us some of your hanging ideas. What is the hoya in your 3rd picture? With your comment about the lighting
9which I'm glad Kelly asked about) your hoyas that are hanging high up, do you mine giving some insite on which hoyas you think do ok in less light. Do you mine telling me where you live and what your climate is like? I'm sorry I'm so full of questions.

Wanted to let everyone know I went to lowes last night, they had quite a few hoyas and also the hanger similar to the one Jo has pictured above(looks like a coat rack) with the four hooks at the top (didn't have the 4 middle hooks though) it was $29.99, not on sale yet. I am waiting for them to put there garden stuff on sale and then i'm gonna get to lowes as fast as my car will drive :-) Just wanted to let you all know b/c since JO posted that I have been running myself ragged looking on the net for one.

RE: My Hoya shelf

Shanna you know if you don't ask your husband for permission he can't tell you not to do it. I give up on asking my husbands permission years ago and it works great.
If I want something hung I just do it, most times he doesn't even notice or maybe he doesn't care but either way i get what I want.

Our Lowe's don't have that plant tree, you never know what you'll find at them. A few years ago I found a four armed green rack for hanging plants and thats where I got my portable greenhouse shelf that I use for rooting cuttings. Jo

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Shanna, Jo said it before I could - I don't ask! Ha, EVER! Seriously, he has given up, I used to get comments about not needing another plant, but those have stopped. He used to count the hooks in the ceiling, but that has stopped too. I am very handy with a drill, dry-wall and stucco anchors, and I even have a masonry bit, as we live in a brick house, and sometimes I find myself drilling into the brick. eek.

Thank you for the compliments - sometimes I look around and think that it is just too much, esp. when I visit friends who don't grow plants...it is very clean and bright in houses where the windows are not covered up. Ha.

It really helps if you keep your hooks very close to the same color as the ceiling though.

You asked about my pots, stand and trellises - they are usually on sale, I spent lots of years bored with two toddlers haunting garage sales, estate sales, antique malls, junk stores...but hey, I also just spent about $70 on a tri-fold screen at Lowes. It really just depends on how lucky I am. I would definitely say that the accessories cost more than the plants.

The super large leaf hoya in the white metal stand is Hoya polystachya from Pekan in the Malay Peninsula. The one in the white pedestal pot is regular old carnosa - my first hoya, an estate sale purchase.

Sorry to be really unhelpful, but I have gotten to the point that my hoyas get put in a spot because it is open now, not so much because it is the most beneficial light wise...I have really relaxed about light, as I am finding that the Hoyas really do adapt to where they are, and as long as I don't over water them, they generally do really well. I hang them where they fit, and if I want to hang one pot under another, I raise up the first pot to a height that I like for the bottom one (if that makes any sense at all...) They still just chug away, happy.

Here is the folding screen. I do try to get deals when I can. It was $102.00, but since it was the last one, and the display, the manager of Lowes clearanced it to $65.00.

Here is the screen:

Photobucket

Here is my Hoya fusco-marginata (vitellina): It is growing on a 6 foot trellis (ala Home Depot)

Now, talk about cheap, my kerrii is growing on those green plastic garden stakes, but it seems to be doing well.

LOL, I need to go to walmart to get some hooks for my celing and also some hooks for the wall (I have some pic's i've been needing put up. Thanks for the celing hook tips I will make sure and get the same color as my celing.

Do you put your hoyas outside at all? About how long have you had your kerrii? It is big and beautiful, and it's trellis-whatever works.. right??. Kerrii has to be one of my favorite hoyas I just love the heart shaped leaves; besides one of my first hoyas (like your carnosa) and variegated macrophylla and now I have to get Hoya polystachya, by looking at your picture it will be at the top of my list. You have suggestions of which grower to purchase through? I have ordered from alot of different ones and been mostly satisfied.

I understand what you mean about going to other peoples houses that don't have plants and everything is clean and uncluttered. My house for the most part is pretty clean and uncluttered except the tables where my plants sit, I take all my plants off every couple weeks and clean the tables but as far as the cludder goes, that I can't get rid of! Too many plants on one table but I like it that way, makes me feel good to walk into my living room and be surrounded by my plants.

Seems like a good deal for the folded screen. Did you have to somehow hook the screen to the wall so it wouldn't fall over? Or is it sturdy enought for the weight you have on it. How many pots will it hold? I noticed you put like 3 smaller pots in one holder. I saw at lowes last night they had something very similar to that, it was a screen too and held 6 maybe 6" pots or so, forgot how much it was but I do know it wasn't on sale.

shanna

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Shanna, the screen is a free standing piece, and you can really adjust it to fit where you want it to. It might be the same one that you saw, this one holds 6 (6-8) inch pots. Mine wasn't on sale either, until I asked someone to put it on sale. Ha!!

I live in Montana, so no, I never grow my hoyas outside. We just had a terrible ice storm Tuesday night, and lots of people lost their gardens, trees and power lines down...IT has even happened in August. Even in a perfect summer, it is too much work to move all of my hoyas outside for only 3 months.

My kerrii was my second hoya, and I just cant resist those. I keep buying them, and adding them to the pot, even though I have a huge one!! I have all these "rare" hoyas that seem so covetous, yet I just keep going back to the kerrii.

Please email me, and I will tell you about who I like for vendors. I think that it is good to try different places/people, and see what works for you.

Go for it - the hooks I mean. I never used to put any in, as I was so worried about finding a stud. Then I found out about anchors, and I put them anywhere I feel like. Ha. Not always a good thing, but hey, I am good at patching plaster too.

RE: My Hoya shelf

Hi Sara! I am glad to see you posting here. Thanks for the fusco-marginata picture especially, that plant is the mama of my little one...it is doing great, by the way, those big leaves are amazing, seems like they grow to that size overnight. Also cool to see the kanyakumariana pic, my little one is finally branching, I put it in a brighter spot as you suggested.

Picture number 8, the big dark round leafed plant on the right - is that obovata or something else?

Gosh, what I wouldn't give to be set loose in your house with some clippers. Everything looks nice, I understand what you all are saying about the clutter, but plant clutter to me is the most attractive kind. Of course anything could be overdone, but I'd much rather look at excess plants than say, a salt and pepper shaker collection, plaster busts of Elvis, or a few dozen cats...and other things that people collect!

RE: My Hoya shelf

Hi, since you are all showing your hoya places, I decided so post one of mine. It's mostly a "hoya kindergarden".

From the left: sansevierias, h. bella, dwarf orchid, h. cummingiana (at the back), h. hasseltii / sigillatis (in the middle), h. shepherdii (in the front), h. callistophylla (in the middle), h. australis, h. carnosa (hydroponic)

My only eastern window

Oh, and I know how to post pics now, but I don't know how to make them smaller, so please don't be mad for the large file... :)

Sara

Sorry to hear about that awful storm and people loosing their gardens and trees. I don't blame you I won't put your precious hoyas outside either. I don't put mine outside because for one, I'm worried it's too windy and they will be knocked off (whatever I put them on)or beat to death if hanging. Also when I tried to set up a shelf outside hubby said I paid to much money for them to take a chance on the weather taking it's toll on my hoyas. I was a little dissappointed but I would be a nervous wreck at work wondering if they were doing ok or not. The weather here in Missouri changes all the time and the weather forcast is unpredectable. I also agree for just a few months it is so much work to move them in and out, the less you move them the less chance you take on accidently dropping one or something.

I think I have all varieties of kerrii except the fuzzy one, I had tried to get it but they didn't have it avaliable at the time.

I emailed you... If you didn't get it email me @ shnntacker@yahoo.com

Anchors I can do, plaster I'd have to confess to the hubby and he'd have to fix that, never done it before. I definately want to get some hooks. Can't wait to put one in, hang a plant on it and see if he notices. I may wait though because my father in law said he was building me some kind of plant thing and I am not sure how tall that's going to be or where i'm going to put it.

Jo
You mentioned when your hoyas get big you would worry about that when the time came and you could do with one less piece of furnature. Well, I agree! I am willing to move my recliner out of the living room and do a little rearranging to have some more window space for my liitle hoya beauties.

Jen
Can I go with you to Sara's house with the clippers? Pretty please!!! Just say when and where, Ha Ha

I'm with ya, plants are the most attractive clutter and serve more purpose than things like you mentioned above, they will never be anymore than what they were the day you bought them. At least plants can grow and you could trade or sell cuttings if you want.

shanna

RE: My Hoya shelf

Sara thanks for the name on that Polystachya, can you tell me where I might be able to find one?

I also sometimes think maybe I've overdone it when I see other peoples houses with no plants but they look so bear and besides I find my plants very relaxing and I truly injoy them so to me they earn their keep.
Thanks Sara for all your pictures I injoyed looking at them.

Shanna post pictures when you get some of your Hoya hanging.
I think my husband thinks it's a trade off, he doesn't get asked to install hooks etc and I get to do what I want. Jo

Hoyas - eastern window

Hi,
it's my eastern window. Ideal for the babies :) Only delicate morning sun.

I use photobucket. But I didn't mean changing the actual photo size (I do that in Photoshop) but making it smaller in the post here - just a miniature that you click on to enlarge in photobucket. I thought it's possible.

hi all, everones hoya collections are beautiful. i got my 8 or 9 hoya cuttings in a trade in 06 and have lost some of them, down to 4 or 5 now. they just grow new length about 1-2 ft long with just a very wee leaf looking thing on stem. one start in each pot and want to make them get bushy. yours all look so healthy. i think mine need orchid soil and plant food. mine is in miracle grow potting mix and not seem to be doing to well. thanks for sharing on the displays. i got lots of ideas to use for ming. thanks

RE: My Hoya shelf

Sara,
I have that same pickle crock, it belonged to my great grandmother. I've been looking for something to put in it. I used to have pond plants in it, they did fine. I hate the thought of drilling through 2 in of clay. I must say I love your Rhipsalis/Hatioria, I've never seen one so long. What do you fed it to keep the segments from bursting? Mine drops stems right an left if it gets any length at all.

What is the little leaved guy on the elephant stand? I really like him.

Shanna,
I'd snag that plant hanger, if I were you. It is way worth more than $30, just because of utility. I would love to have a few more hangers like the one I have.

Kelly,
Milo reminds me a lot of my Ed. He's a b/w tuxedo, but has the same expression on his goofy face most al the time.

selmun,
I love the red & white matching pots. I love the old blue china dishes and try to find any I can, those pots have the same feel as the old china dishes.

 o
RE: My Hoya shelf

Mentha, I have a pot inside the Red Wing crock, so that I don't have to pot anything directly in it. I could NEVER bring myself to drill a hole in them - yikes. That is cool that you have your grandma's pickle crock though. I spent a lot of years looking for them. I have a 4, 8, 15 gallon sizes, and a 3 gallon butter churn crock.

I think that the plant you are thinking is a rhipsalis is my linearis. Ha, you wouldn't believe how many times I would walk into a big box store and spot a rhipsalis and get really excited thinking that I had found liniaris, only to discover it wasn't. Ha. I don't have a rhipsalis though. Your porch is wonderful - I would love to sit out there with a cup of coffee, and the morning paper.

The small leafed hoya in the elephant planter is kanyakumariana, it is cute, and really different than a lot of the leaves out there. I tend to gravitate toward extremes - I like the really large, and the really small leafed hoyas.

Selmun, I LOVE your red and white planters! Those are the coolest.

Linda, the elephant planter was an estate sale purchase from back in 1995. I was in college, and let me tell you, the $20 I spent on that was our grocery money for the week. Ha. It is amazing that it made it through all the moves, and life changes.

If I do end up doing some "haircutting", Linda, I will definitely let you know. I will hopefully be getting some nice growth if the weather would just warm up! It is starting to get a little scary seeing as our high temps have only been in the 70's, and July is nearly upon us.

RE: My Hoya shelf

Gorgeous pix & set-ups everybody! I'm just swooning over that giant-leafed Hoya -- Pachyclada or Pentaphlebia? Definately going on my wish list whatever it is!!

That pic of Mylo is a an absolute riot, I think he's saying "what -- you can't mean you don't need my help w/ the Hoyas???"

Kelly -- I found Curtisii very easy rooting (not the fastest grower...), but I've rooted it easily in water, in mix & even mounted on bark, affixed w/ sewing thread, as long as I misted it every couple of days.

My recently found Numm appears to be EA, not labeled so, but looks & sized like their pots. Tho' it didn't seem to be in their strange mix, the first thing I did was remember Gabi's advice abt taking the saucer off the bottom. It was very hard to get off, I replaced 2/3 of the mix, & hang it off my kitchen cupbaords to water it, where it can drip freely into the sink. It seems really happy & continues to grow like mad!! That includes the 2 other pots of it I've made, along w/ my experimental pot growing in clay pellets & water!

RE: My Hoya shelf

This is a good thread, I really enjoy looking at everyone's display. I love all the plants you've got.

I grow most of my plants outside, in my "light house" or "shade house" (one covered with transparent plastic sheet on top and the other with dark colored plastic net). I only keep my African Violets and a few houseplants inside.

I do want to keep my big hoyas inside, by my kitchen window, but I just fear they might not grow as well as they would outside. Now that I see how good-looking Sara's (green971) plants are, maybe I will go ahead and keep them inside after they've done blooming.

Thanks ks_girl for starting such an interesting thread.

Thanks ks_girl for starting this thread!!

Everyone's BEAUTIFUL arrangements have given me such great ideas.

And ... here's a "shelf" in my office in which I've utilized a small stool to house three good-sized plants by using a wrought-iron plant stand (sent to me by a lovely friend) to hold the curtisii, while my heuschkeliana hangs off the side, and sitting below is my variegated macrophylla.

I like being able to utilize the horizontal space in front of a window!!

RE: My Hoya shelf

Ann, I LOVE your hoya displays - I have a huge fetish for pots, and your planters are beautiful! I love how you have your stool displayed - I have the same curtisii from Exotic Angel, and it doesn't have those long "danglies" yet, mine is still in the canopy phase.

I think most of us don't lay claim to six figure incomes, I am happy raking in my three-figure income, and living in my hoya jungle!! As long as I can buy food, heat, and hoyas I don't need much. LOL - one of my best friends just got back from a cruise, I have to settle for Disney. Ha! Ha!

Is that vitellinoides on the top shelf of the second picture? I love that hoya!! The hoya next to it, is it a clandestina or polystachya? I love the big thick green leaves on that plant. Ha!

Love it all!!! I am quite fond of the black metal racks I don't think they look bad at all. As Sara said your planters are all very nice. Can I ask where you got your little 4 inch white hanging pots? YOu have quite the collection of hoyas there. I almost had my want list deplenished, only have 2 hoyas on there. Unfortunately now I have 6 more with 2 of them being duplicates. Will it ever go away? Nevermind don't answer!! It's frustrating not being able to spend as much money on plants as you want huh? I have spent alot lately, I need to just be happy for a while and chill out. I was going to go through my reciepts yesterday and see just exactly how many I have bought since spring but I think I really better not.

Very nice collection you have there and I also like the black shelves and have several myself.
It's also very easy to add a plant light under the shelves.
Our Target store puts them on sale quite often so i get mine than. Target has a lot lower price than Lowe's for them.
