Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

I got a Hoya Loyceandrewsiana while down in San Diego this last weekend. I can't tell where yet because I have to give Cena enough time to get there and pick herself a few up. Cena almost ran away with mine when we met on Saturday. Anyway she said it was tricky to grow, could someone tell me where they come from and specific care for this plant please?

Here is the lonely flat of them.

I wish I could help you, but I don't have this one...yet... Had to laugh to your post about giving Cena time to get there though! Us hoya addicts can be like vultures, can't we?!

Mentha I think you got lucky, that's a very nice plant.

I have a cutting of this plant and have heard that it is a very slow grower that likes bright light. When I first got my cutting it was fall and I rooted it in my rooting chamber/aquarium and it did well even putting out new growth. The new growth became so tall that I had to remove the cutting from the aquarium and at that point all growth stopped. I am hoping for some signs of new growth soon.

Hoya loyceandrewsiana was described as a new species by Ted Green in Fraterna 21 #2 in 2008. Before being named after Mrs.Loyce Andrews from who's collection this plant came from this Hoya had been assigned the name Hoya diversifolia B possibly by Mrs. Andrews, no one is absolutely certain where this Hoya was collected.

Mike,
I'll tell you that I had the thing in my rental car for a couple of days, along with every other plant I bought and was given on my trip. It was not what I would have liked to do but while staying at other peoples' houses, you can't bring in a hundred plants at every stop. Anyway the plant grew about 1/4 in in two places in two days! Maybe heat & humidity is the key? Heat I can give it, but humidity may be a problem.

It looks like it would be an interesting hoya to have. I was just reading the Fraterna article, as it just happens to be one of the few issues that I have. 70 flowers in an umbel.....sounds like it would be pretty impressive in bloom. It isn't in the DL catalogue so I guess it's not the easiest hoya to get hold of. That was a lucky find.

Sanday Paul Shirley has this one for sale.

This is one of my personal favs. I have one plant that looks like yours and it grows pretty well. Some of the leaves have a reddish margin. The other one I got in 2003 and it has like 4 leaves. Never had either bloom...yet!

Hi! I visit this forum off and on now for several years now. I just wanted to let you know that Grigsby Cactus carries these for $12.50, I just ordered 2. They have a limit of 2. They also carry AUSTRALIS ssp. ORAMICOLA for $10.00. They are all rooted and not bad for the price. :)

RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

Well, there went the cat! I did get it at Grigsby's. My plant is only a cutting, but seems to be well rooted in a 5 in square pot. I didn't mean to sound like I'd bought the whole flat.

You're bad Mike. LOL I think I've already gone over my limit....for this year at least.

RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

Darn, I thought about ordering one, but they require a permit to ship to FL...at the cost of $25 for the permit. Guess this one is off my list :o(

Nice plant Mentha!

Hurry Cena, RUN!! LOL. Sorry, I didn't mean to let the cat outta the bag! Just wanted to help! :o)

RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

Hi Mentha,
Did you by any chance get to see the mother plants? These things seem to take forever to grow I just wonder how she keeps a steady supply of these! I had one for like 4 years, it only had 2 leaves, it would start to grow a new vine, then the vine would die back. The leaves would just grow bigger but no new leaves. I finally lost it this past winter.
The owner of the greenhouse told me not to use bark in the mix at all! No sand either, but mentioned gravel. She said to water it, most people don't water them enough. Did she give you any tips? I see you have gravel on yours.

 o
RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

The gravel is the top dressing it came with. I haven't dug into the soil yet, since I was given a bunch of cuttings on my trip and am still dealing with those. I don't use bark at all for my hoyas or anything really organic for that matter. I use 1 part peat free potting soil, 1 part perlite, & 1 part pumice, turface MVP, non clumping clay cay litter, Schultz aquatic soil, or Hydroton, depending upon the availability. I use this as a base then add another helping of perlite or chunky stuff. Sometimes I use packing peanuts broke into smallish pieces. I have been using decomposed granite as a top dressing lately, since I can just dig it up in the river bed for free.
That is why I asked I do not want it to die because it needs something else besides what I usually use.

Just for fun I thought I'd show how quickly this guy has grown in two weeks. I may have to get it a trellis soon :)

RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

I have been trying to get in here for TWO WEEKS.. Teree... we need to talk!

GW had me reregistering even though I've been a member since '97. I sent an impassioned plea last week, never heard back, but Viola! I am able to log in and post!

Gorgeous, I'm STILL jealous.
No... things have changed drastically in just 21 days. All new job, alone in the office, angry folks calling me because of being left on hold by past administration.

I checked my show plants to get ready for the local Show & Sale and found four (counted 'em on my fingertips cause I was SHOCKED! I usually take between 11 and 18 plants every year... :( )

Not sure I'm responsible enough to have new plants....

Thanks for all the giggles and fun about this plant.
Mentha, I tell 'ya, don't turn your back anytime I'm around this plant. It was a sore temptation to hold it in my hands after years of... (is lust a prohibited word????) "desiring to acquire" this plant, then to meekly hand it back due to the wonderful gift you had just handed me!!! I may just have to weather the 'salty' phone answerer and wend my way up the 60 miles...

~sigh~

RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

I went to my first C&SS show last weekend, I got 3 1st (surprisingly my little mam got a first!) 2 2nd's and 4 3rd's

1st Mam (too lazy to look up)
1st Sans suffruitosia
1st Xeriosysis (I know that's missspelled) danguayi
2nd Sans cylindrica
2nd Epiphyllum dijonaise
3rd haworthia
3rd gasteria
3rd Sans fischeri
3rd Sans pingulica

and I bought three gems from Ed Eby's son
Sans "Koko", Sans alva, & Sans schweinfurthii.

Two of my name cards were missplaced when they moved my plants so they didn't get judged, but all in all I think I did well for a first timer.

RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

After sorting through the wreckage of my back yard (by my own hand, mind) I found four plants worthy of showing for my big day next Saturday.

You did WELL!

 o
RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

Good luck at the show, Cena! The wee ones woke me up at 6, they wanted to send a big nose to nose to their brother & sister.

RE: Hoya Care and David Liddle catalog

I am new at this forum and need web sites to go to for planting and care of Hoyas. How I do I get a catalog from D.L.and how to place an order?
You'all seem to know each other and have a lot of fun. I hope to have some of the successes you talk about. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

 o
RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

The DL catalog is posted online on the Stemma website. Since DL is in Australia, group orders are placed due to the high cost of shipping to the USA. You also need to have an import permit in order to get cuttings from DL. I would guess it would be way too expensive for a single person to order from DL.

If you keep tabs on this forum, there may be a group order at some point, I would think.
Good luck,
Mike

RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

Welcome to the forum gardenmagic! There are also these two places in FL, that sell small or med. size rooted Hoyas, here's their websites: I've ordered from both of these places and had been very satisfied. HTH

RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

Also, anywhere you see an IML number associated with a hoya, that means that the person originally purchased the hoya from DL. DL uses IML numbers on all of his plants.

RE: Hoya Loyceandrewsiana care

Hi everyone! I got 2 rooted cuttings from Grigsby's a year ago and 1 didn't make it through the winter. The other was looking a bit sad so I ordered a cutting from Ted Green in Hawaii. It rooted out very quickly in my aeroponics chamber and I put it in the same pot with the other loyce and now both of them are just sitting there doing absolutely nothing! Have tried moving them to different windows and using the plant heat mat but humidity is a problem up here as once the weather warms up it's pretty dry!
Will have to think about this.
