Hoya pubicalyx?

What is the difference between h.pubicalyx pink silver and the (old fashion) spotted carnosa? Is it white for the carnosa and dark pink for pubicalyx? Both plants (leaves) look so similar to me.Are they both considered a carnosa?
I just was never really sure or clear about this one.
It had a few dried up old remnants of what looked like dark pink or reddish flowers when I got it years ago, but it hasn't flowered since, but I'm hoping it will again.
Thanks for any help.

| It looks like hoya carnosa to me. Hoya pubicalyx is a climber and leaves are slender. When I had it on the window it took over the blinds cords by itself in no time. It is a very fast grower compare to carnosa. |

Yes, that looks like Hoya carnosa to me too. It will have white flowers. Most pubicalyx have pink or purplish blooms and longer more narrow leaves. Altho I think the pubicalyx are a bit easier to get to bloom than the regular green carnosa. Marcy |

| Thanks michmatt & mairzy. It's not a climber, so that helps some narrowing the name down. The only thing is, the flowers aren't white, the dried up flowers that were on it when I received it looked to be red, or a dark pink maybe. Could it still be a carnosa then? Billy Rae |

hmm...are you sure the dried flowers were attached to THAT plant? It could be they had fallen off something else into that one's pot or something, huh? On the other hand, IDing a hoya by leaves only is not a reliable method at all, and especially a picture of leaves. Ha. It could be that you have somehting entirely different there that you won't know what it is until it blooms again. If & when it does, post a picture of the flower and we'll go from there. In the meantime just lable it Hoya "NOID" which means no ID yet. Marcy Marcy |

| Yep, the dried flowers were attached to this plant and had to be pinched off.I remember this particular hoya because it was huge and became my second one at the time. It was about 3 ft to 4 ft long and VERY heavy, so heavy in fact that I thought there were stones/rocks in the bottom of the pot but there was only soil in the 6" pot I didn't have the room at the time for such a large plant, so I cut it back and that's when I saw the dried flowers which looked kinda reddish/dark pink Maybe it could be something different, oh, that would be nice!I must get this to flower again, when and if it does, I'll be sure to post a picture. Thanks for the help, Billy Rae |

Hi, Billy Rae, I also agree your plant looks like a carnosa because my pubicalyx have very thin, long leaves but I disagree that a carnosa is not a climber, look at this picture of my carnosa grown from a cutting and now two years old, it is certainly a climber.

| Great picture Leon its a beautiful plant, My bigger Carnosa is not as splashy as yours it is more like Billy Rea's. Vines are dangling down and never climb like in pubicalyx, unless I start training them upwards on a hoop. New stems are much stiffer then in pubicalyx , leaves are heavier and close to each other. My Pubicalyx makes those long leafless vines that twine around everything and then the leaves appear. I have a smaller h.carnosa -one that looks like yours, only one vine on it -and I had to train it on the hoop (before it was going down dangling) Vines on pubicalyx got up and around by themselves. So what you are saying vines on your carnosa got up without initial "help"? That is great the plant looks very tidy and the size of the leaves is unbelievable. Good growing Lean. |

| Yes, mitchmatt, my carnosa climbs by itself, puts out long, bare branches then wraps around anything close. I also have Carnosa krimson queen and carnosa krimson princess and they also climb un-assisted. |

| That's a very nice healthy plant you have! Mine has gotten those (wondering bare stems) They are thick ones compared to other hoyas, they want to hang on to other plants nearby or whatever they can get their stems on. I think if we stood next to them long enough, we be totally in-twined like a mummy! But so far, this ones seems more laid back, it just doesn't seem to be looking to go anywhere, (non aggressive stems) lol. The few bare stems that grow will grow out to the sides and then hang down, so I'll bring them up over the plant to keep it a little more compact and up and away from my two cats from making a new play toy out of them. This one would need training to grow up I think to look anything like yours does:>) The most aggressive hoya I think I have is H. Publicalyx Splash (Pink Silver) That one loves to go climbing!
