Hoya linearis is a weird looking hoya

I got some cuttings of Hoya linearis, as a surprise. I already knew it was a tricky plant, and not for beginners, and yet here I am, with cuttings : ) It's an odd looking plant, and completely not what I'd think of when I think of hoyas. I've decided to go semihydro with this one, since most of the success stories I'd read said they were growing it that way. The more I look at this weirdo plant, though, the more I like it. I'd like to see it thrive. So, does anyone have any tips for me, trying to grow this guy? Does it root well? Does it have temperature preferences? Is it more of a high light hoya, or a shaded hoya? It's currently in Hydroton, in a clear plastic glass so I can see the water level (didn't have time to implement the other method). It's getting spilloff light from a 30W CFL to the right, and an 85W CFL to the left, but isn't super close to either one of them (maybe a foot and a half away from both). It's been about 5 days, and the leaves and stems are still green, and nothing's gone brown on me that didn't already look like it was going to do so.

I'm thinking that since it is still here, I should start moving it to a location that is more to its liking, rather than its current transient 'what the heck do I do with this' location. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Yes, linearis is very unHoya-like, I would agree. It's a testimonial to the variableness (I made up that word!) of the genus, that's for sure!

I'd love to give you some advice, but I don't yet grow linearis. I had cuttings at one time, but lost them. I'm going for a rooted plant next time to give me a better chance at success!

Hi Denise,

Been meaning to get back to you -- too busy ;>)

Hi QF,

Funny you should ask how we grew it & about moisture, mentioning semi-Hydro. When I explained how I was growing it, a friend laughingly called it growing on the beach:

in a small glass bowl/jar lined w/ pumice into which I set the small pot w/ a single cutting, w/ a wick extending from its pot into the bed of pumice. I watered to overflow several times a week: it kept it moist MOST of the time.

I lost it after I time, may have accidentally let it dry out & I'd only had a small piece of it anyway.

I guess FOR ME, this one was a bit more high maintenance than I managed well.

I got a cutting last fall and it has done well. I was a little worried that the thin stems would rot during rooting so I choose to weigh them down with a small beach pebble instead of burying the stem and node. I used a potting mix with soil, bark and extra coarse aquarium grit. I used to only water once a week and let the potting mix dry right out but now that it is sunny and warm I water more often, a couple times a week but the pot it only 2.5 inches.

I like this Hoya because it is so different, the strongly pendant stems make such a nice hanging basket plant.

I LOVE linearis! I have two - some cuttings from last year that are in hydroton in a north facing window and a big EA basket in the EA mix in a southern window with a sheer curtain (got that one in January, I think). My cuttings rooted fairly quickly in semi-hydro. So far these two are doing well! Did have an EA basket shipped to me last year and that one went downhill REALLY quickly. I believe linearis is a cooler growing species.

Good luck!

This is the only hoya I keep inside year around. I've had my small plant for about 2 years now and it is doing very well and growing like a weed. I keep it in a 3 inch pot with fast draining soil and water 1 to 2 times a week. It is in a very bright room with east exposure. It gets a bit of sun everyday. Since I live in Georgia where it is very hot and humid, I keep it in where we are air conditioned and it is very happy. My plant is still a small one, but it has vines that are now about 12 to 15 inches long, It is ONE WEIRD looking plant....

I've read that H. linearis likes cool temps.

I have to keep my plant almost bone dry during the winter or it rots on me.

I used to put the plant outside, but it would be attacked by these bright orange aphids. Don't know where they came from since I've never seen them on any other plant in my yard - only on the H. linearis when I put it outside.

To root, I just stick cuttings in a mixture of seed starting mix (Jiffy mix or Reddi-Earth) and extra perilite. H. linearis roots quite easily, from my experience. Since the plant grows so fast, I do need to restart it every few years to keep it from getting ratty looking.

Thanks for all the input. Mine is still with me. I can't tell if it's happy, but at least it doesn't seem to hate me. I think I'm a smidge overwhelmed... I traded away most of my African violet babies and ended up with a lot of things to pot up and find space for. And I had seedlings to plant outside, before it gets even later in the year. But I've got linearis within easy view, so if it starts to head south I'll see it in time to try and do something about it. I'll get my hopes up when I start seeing new growth; til then, I'm happy enough maintaining status quo : )
