Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??
| | |
Posted by puglvr1 9 FL (My Page) on Wed, Jun 10, 09 at 8:38
| I was at my local Walmart a few days ago, and happen to be looking at the nursery to see if they had anything new, when I noticed this EA Lacunosa that had some red leaves, thought it might be the new one "Ruby Sue", but the label didn't say it...It just says, Mini Wax leaf. I didn't need another Lacunosa so I did not buy it, was actually very similar to the regular one except for some red leaves. I did however happen to have my camera in the car, so I went back and took some pictures to post on here. I think I will wait for the "Royal Flush", that sounds a lot more interesting to me because of the "red splash".
So has anyone purchased Ruby Sue and does it come with that label?

It's looks like the Ruby Sue, I've been looking for one around here but none so far. I love the color and the flowers on this one isn't white like on the green one. I have the solid green one and the variegated one and would love to add this one to my collection. I love the flowers and their smell, especially in the winter when I hang it next to my kitchen sink window and it blooms all winter long. I can't think of any other hoya that will do that. I also love the compactness of the Lacunosa, it hangs nicely and doesn't take up a lot of space. |

| Pug,by all accounts that appears to be Ruby Sue!!!! I got mine from one of the local Lowes stores several months back and it's grown into a huge plant. it was big when I got it but it's almost doubled in size or so it seems!!! EA is also releasing another clone of this plant called "Royal Flush" which looks just like "Ruby Sue" but with speckling on the leaves. I've been told it won't hit the stores until sometime around July though. Congrats on the new find especially at wallyworld!!! david |

You guys are lucky. Our local Walmart(s) don't even carry hoyas during warmer months. Sande |

| Thanks for the replies, like I said I wasn't sure if this was Ruby Sue because it wasn't labeled that way. Just had the usual "Mini Waxleaf" hoya label it usually has. David, I am also waiting for the Royal Flush to arrive... I did not buy this one. I wonder if I should see if its still there? I have limited space for the bigger hoyas. Smaller ones are so much easier to find a home for. Jo, what are the color of the blooms suppose to be on this one? Its not white? Sande, I'm sure you will see it in your neighborhood soon, usually mine is always the last place to get anything good! |

Nancy, I've only seen a picture someone posted and it's color is hard to describe. It's like a light lavender/wine color, kind of a lighter shade of the stem color. Very pretty I thought, that's one of the things I like about it the most is the color of the blooms. I'm determined to find one but so far no luck. I don't think I've ever found any EA plants at Wal Mart here. |

| I purchased one that looked exactly like that. I was worried that the discoloration was a sign of a unheathly plant. Maybe too much light but not quite scorched? idk? I noticed on mine that the vines with discolored leaves seemed to be the ones with the blooms on them and also some seemed to be reaching out of the pot. The blooms on mine are white then they fade to a beige. They are fragrant like a lily. It was a EA plant and advertised as Mini Wax Leaf. |

| I retract my earlier comment. I have no clue if this is Ruby Sue or not. I have one of these and with the reds I am getting in the leaves as well as a small tinge of red on the outside of the flower when it starts to fade and drop. I am starting to question the tag. Whereas the tag said 'H.Lacunosa Mini Wax Leave' I assumed the standard H.Lacunosa since it would be smart to advertise new cultivars or strains and they did not on. I will have to get a second source for some H.Lacunosa so I can compare it to this possible 'Ruby Sue' Does a bonafide H.Lacunosa ever get red foliage? If so then this will be a mystery I guess. idk anymore :) cheers Peanut01 |

Nancy, that sure looks like "Ruby Sue". I'll take few photos of my "Ruby Sue" later including flowers. Jan |

| Peanut, I don't know enough about the Ruby Sue to be sure, but from my own Lacunosa's I can tell you that neither the Reg. or the Snow caps have "red" leaves. Also this one has a lot of red vines...my other two only has green vines. This one also didn't say "Ruby Sue"...which is why I questioned its ID. From what little I know about it, it sounds like that is what you have Ruby Sue? Just my non-expert guess, lol...Can you post a pic of yours Peanut? Jan, I'm looking forward to your pictures. It would be nice to do a comparison especially the color of the flower. Did yours come with the same Tag as the above Pic? "Mini Wax Leaf"...or did it specifically say Lacunosa "Ruby Sue"? Thanks... |

Nancy, photo was taken in the shade so the color is not really true on my photo. Slight tint of purple on the Flowers.

| I forgot, the tag didn't say "Ruby Sue" but any other lacunosa I've seen does not have purple stems. |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??

| Hey there: Just skimming thu this thread, but the H. lacunosa 'Tove' I have has purplish stems and leaves when they are young. It is very new to me and is a young plant (from a cutting) but I look at it every day cuz I like the darkish new growth :) |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??

Hey Klyde, I don't have a lacunosa tove. Good to know it has darkish new growth. Can you post a photo? |

| Okey dokey, I'll try. Never done it before, and am a complete $#$% at this sort of thing, but I'll give 'er a go. Just be patient. Kelly in Victoria |

| Jan, In the most recent Stemma issue, Antone Jones interviewed the head grower of EA. Since EA labels the reddish lacunosa as "Ruby Sue", if yours didn't have that label, I would think it isn't "Ruby Sue". I don't think "Royal Flush" has come out yet, but it will be labeled with its true name as well. Here's the piece from the article, explaining the 2 different variants: "Yes, we have 2 more variants of Hoya lacunosa. One has a deep red or maroon leaf blade, especially on the newer growth, and a dark almost black stem and petioles. We have named this one 'Ruby Sue' and it has been released. We will introduce another variant of Hoya lacunosa that appears as a cross between the above mentioned maroon 'Ruby Sue' and 'Snow caps'. This one will knock your socks off, deep maroon leaf blades with the white speckles of 'Snow caps' complimented by black stem and petioles. We have named this one 'Royal Flush" and should be released it in our hanging baskets by late summer." Gabi |

| Gabi, I'll look at the tag again today. |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue???

| No tag. I must looked at some other plant. |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue????

| I saw one at Walmart, the tag said carnosa. |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??

| Jan, sorry for the late reply...was out of town (no computer, lol). Thanks so much for the pictures, yours looks exactly the same. I guess its anyone's guess exactly what it is. All I know is the Lacunosas that I have, none of them ever had red new growths or red stems... |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??

| That is the nicest looking lacunosa I've seen. I was feeling so proud of mine and then took a look at that one. Whoa. Mine looks like the wimpy cousin. Don't tell her I said that, she's sensitive. Kelly in Victoria |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??

| Here are a few pictures of my Lacunosa. regular or not. I don't know. It was labeled H.Lacunosa Mini Waxleaf another
another
and one more...
Thanks for looking :) |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??

| Peanut, that is one BEAUTIFUL Lacunosa!! I can definitely see all the red leaves on it, very attractive. Do you have your hoya in any direct sun at all? Or does it just get indirect bright light? Thanks for sharing your pictures! |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??
| | |
| Peanut, that IS a beautiful lacunosa! If anyone sees Royal Flush, please alert the rest of us so we can start hunting for it. Thanks! Sande |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??

| Thanks, this hoya has been most rewarding. This fragrance to go along with my Gardenia and my Oriental lilies that are in bloom now. I can't wait for my other hoyas to bloom to compliment the fragrance :) I keep her under my front porch. No direct sun. Indirect bright light only(south side of house). I have been on the lookout for any other EA hoyas that I do not have yet. I have 3 HomeDepots, 3 WalMarts, and 3 Lowes locally to search at. Does anyone know if EA is currently distributing all of the hoyas listed on their website? I have only found 5 varieties locally between all 9 stores I have to check. Peanut01 |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??
| | |
| Peanut, that plant looks a lot darker than mine. Gorgeous!!! |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??
| | |
| Thanks for the info Peanut. As far as your question about EA distributing all the hoyas on their website, I'm not really sure? I think it depends on your area. I have heard people buying H. Chelsea or Linearis at some of the big box stores, but yet I have never seen these available in my area. Yes, Please post when anyone sees "Royal Flush". Article says its suppose to be released late summer. I'm looking forward to seeing this one! |
RE: Is This Lacunosa Ruby Sue??

| I know the lady who orders for our Lowe's and she said that EA only sends out assorted plants and she never knows what they'll get. I think it all depends on what's available at the time of shipping. I've only seen Linearis once around here and never Australis or the new Lacunosa "Ruby Sue" or "Royal Flush" JO |
