Big mac update

Update on the macrophylla variegata cluster of peduncles - they're close to opening. Now I have 9 (yes, NINE!) at that one node, and 8 of them are going to open simultaneously. And, interestingly enough, there are new buds coming right behind the pedicels, so it looks like I'll get a double show!

Thanks, Kelly. I forgot to mention that I put it in our C&S show this last weekend and I won a blue ribbon for it!

RE: Big mac update

I have to admit that when I read the title of this thread I thought I was going to see a picture of Hoya macgillivrayi! (:o)
I'm not disappointed, though, since all those buds sure are cool!
Please post a pic when all of the flowers open.
Thanks,
Mike

Ha...don't feel bad Mike - I also thought it was about H. macgillivrayi (since that's the nickname for that hoya). But after reading this thread, I can see why the name "Big mac" is appropriate!

RE: Big mac update

Gabi & Mike,

I've called my macrophylla "Big Mac" since I got it, long before I had macgrillivrayii. It's leaves are really much bigger (and showy) IMO.

But since we're on the subject, my "Big Mac-G" (my new name for macgillivrayii!) has finally started new growth. Now I know it's a late starter for sure. Last year, I waited and waited and WAITED for new growth and, round about July, it finally kicked in and started growing. Well, it was the same this year - about a week ago, I noticed new growth in several different places. Apparently, it's one of those that needs the longest, hottest days to get going. Maybe one (or more) of those many peduncles it formed last year will finally bud up. I have one that has tried a few times, always aborting at some point.

RE: Big mac update

Well, I'm afraid the stress of taking the plant to our show for two days must have stunted the flowers, because it's like they're in suspended animation. I'm hoping it didn't stunt the buds behind these flowers, and maybe I'll get another show soon.

I knew there was a risk of bud drop or this sort of thing, but with it budding up just in time for the show, I couldn't help but share it. I mean, how often does a display like this happen! (Answer: maybe for someone else, but never in the 30 years I've been growing them!)

True...macrophylla var. leaves are just stunning (and yes, bigger than Big Mac). It's one of my favorite hoyas - I don't even care if it ever blooms...the leaves are enough for me.

I find the leaves of Big Mac simple and boring. But those flowers!!! That's actually why it's called Big Mac...I've seen them in person at Meadowbrook (well, actually they were in bud..but still gorgeous and HUGE) and I can't wait till mine flowers. It needs a lot of heat and humidity - I wish I had a window in my bathroom!

RE: Big mac update

Gabi,
Yes, when anyone says "big mac" I just assume (incorrectly) that the person is speaking of Hoya macgillivrayi.

Yes, I love the leaves on macrophylla var. too. The plant never needs to bloom since the leaves are so stunning (well, flowers would be nice, but not necessary - oh, who am I kidding? I want flowers, too!!!)

I just ordered macgillivrayi from DL so I'm excited to get one. I think I ordered the Massey River Queensland form with dark red flowers.

With all of the hoyas I've purchased recently, I need to put a cardboard box out in the yard so I have the room for the hoyas in the house! Whatever it takes to have the room for the hoyas!

I have a spreadsheet with all my hoyas and if I get everything from DL, I'll have 57. Back in the late 70's and early 80's I had almost 70, so I'm almost back to where I was. The plants I have now are so much cooler than the plants I had back then (lots and lots of carnosa hybrids), but there are so many cool hoyas available now. I just need to win the 10+ million in the HotLotto and I'll be set! Greenhouse, here I come!

RE: Big mac update

Mike,

No, it's not an incorrect assumption - that's really the nickname of macgillivrayii! I posted a link below to what I found when I typed in "big mac hoya".

Ok ok...I'll admit it, I want flowers on my macrophylla too!! But I still like the leaves better. I'd rather have flowers on my macgillivrayii!! And you have the one with dark red blooms...I'm jealous!

I also keep a spreadsheet (well, it's a notebook now...but I started a spreadsheet so I can toss the notebook). I write the name of the hoya, where I got it, when I got it, and the size when I got it. Good to know I'm not the only hoya geek :)

As for the lottery, I'm with you on that - my first purchase would be a huge greenhouse, and the second would be DL's nursery!!
