Kicked into gear!

I've had a cutting of finlaysonii I got in the summer of '07 that has been rather stubborn about growing. I think it put on only two leaves last year, and I've been utterly impressed with it so far. (The photos I see are beautiful, so I've been considering buying one, since this one has done so little...) I put the rooted cutting outside this spring and told it, (wagging finger) "If you don't grow this summer, you're a goner!" Well, I just discovered a big new leaf with a stem of new growth following it. It's lovely - take a look...

So I went and checked the other one I gave the same lecture to... fraterna. Got it as a cutting last summer from Awanda. It rooted nicely but never put on even the minutest growth and, in fact, I lost 3 of the 4 leaves it came with. Well, it's got a new pair of leaves forming, too! (They were too small to get a good photo of, but I wanted to share my excitement...) Seems like putting stubborn growers outside works like a charm most of the time!

Hey Denise, congrats!!! You know most of mine grow outside. When I bring some of the hoyas inside for long length of time, they sulk.

Denise that is one nice looking leaf, the Hoya finlaysonii I got recently in trade does not have the flecks but it does have very nice veining on the leaf. Hoya finlaysonii has so many varieties, definitely a Hoya that everyone should have. I got a cutting from David Liddle a little while ago that your plant reminds me of, well superficially anyways because they both have large flecking.

Congrats on the new growth.

Congratulations on the new growths, Denise. I can share the excitement because I have been on the same boat for many times with my hoyas.
I have a very stubborn kerrii variegated. Regardless of what I have done with it, it just won't do anything!!! I 'punished' it by hanging it on a tree in my garden and let it be. Maybe I will follow you... I will wag my finger at it... and see if it will get the lesson... LOL!
Jan, it happens to me too, when I bring my plants inside for a long time, they look sad! So I have to take them back out into the shade house.
I think maybe our plants are... spoiled! We dote on them too much, don't we?

Xuan,

Don't feel alone about variegated kerrii - both my regular and reverse variegates are stubborn plants, even though the three other clones of kerrii are good growers. I put my regular variegated kerrii outside because it loses all it's variegation in winter. I may part with that one this year as it just doesn't get me that excited. I love kerrii, but knowing it's supposed to be variegated, but at its best, you have to look to notice it, I figure why not just keep plain kerrii and make space for something else? I may do that...

Reverse var., however, is beautiful, and if it ever grows for me, I'll be jumping for joy!

RE: kerrii

Oh, and I should mention, anyone looking for a kerrii, go over to the "exchange" part of this forum as I've posted over there re: kerrii...

Denise that is a really pretty leaf! I don't have any large leaved hoyas...I wonder how they would do here, do you keep it outside or have it inside mostly?

Salt,

Almost all of mine are large-leaved, and they (for the most part) stay in. I have a little greenhouse off my kitchen, but I have a close neighbor, so in winter, it's not substantially better than my windows in the house, where I grow a lot of them, too. So yes, they would do fine for you, I'm sure.

I have the same going on with my finlaysonii cutting I traded for last summer. The girl sent me one long, very wooded branch which I just stuck in soil as I do with all my cuttings. Well, this one does not do anything, not grow and not die. I took a tip cutting a few weeks ago but it's the same, it just sits in its pot and does mocks me.
I will have to have a serious talk with them ;) ... but other than that, any more tips on trying to get this variety to grow?

Evelyn
