Mushrooms in my Hoyas!!!

Okay, one of my plants came home from Lowe's with MUSHROOMS or something resembling them. With that particular plant, I covered the soil with sphagnum moss . . . no more mushrooms. before I did that, however, the spores spread. I've since put the moss on most of the plants. The few I didn't now have mushrooms. They have moss, now. My question is . . .is the moss going to hurt anything? It seems to be working to control the nasty mushrooms, but will it hurt my hoyas? I was hoping it would change the pH in the soil just enough to make it unlivable for the nasties!

Thanks,

Carolyn

RE: Mushrooms in my Hoyas!!!

What colour are the mushrooms, yellow? The common yellow mushroom found in flowerpots is called leucocoprinus luteus or leucocoprinus birnbaumii. I get these in some of my plants and although they are supposed to be fairly harmless they will completely fill the potting mix with mycelium and make it very hard to water the plant properly. This fungus species also makes little ball like survival bodies that are used to spread the fungus along with the spores that develop when the fungus produces mushrooms. The mushrooms are really just the fruit, what you need to be concerned with it the growth taking place below the surface. I first noticed these mushrooms on coconut husk chips I had in a terrarium and that was about ten years ago, have had them ever since and never been able to completely eradicate them, presumably because of spores. Never let the mushrooms develop and set spores or you will be forever fighting them.

I think it's too late . . . looks like they'll be there FOREVER!!! I've repotted most of the plants affected. Besides repotting, is there any additive for the soil to get rid of them? I can't decide if they came in with my rope or in the Miracle Gro potting soil I bought!

I have never tried a garden fungicide but you might want to try a sulfur based one, not sure what it would do when used as a pot drench. Many other fungicides are very toxic so I stay away from them. I have tried plain old cinnamon which I let sit in a mason jar of water with a drop of dish soap for a few hours, seems to work but not a cure.

Fungus

I'll try anything at this point!!! Cinnamon in a jar of water with a drop of dish soap . . . got it!

I'll look up sulfur based fungicide and see what I find.

Thanks again, Mike!
