| What colour are the mushrooms, yellow? The common yellow mushroom found in flowerpots is called leucocoprinus luteus or leucocoprinus birnbaumii. I get these in some of my plants and although they are supposed to be fairly harmless they will completely fill the potting mix with mycelium and make it very hard to water the plant properly. This fungus species also makes little ball like survival bodies that are used to spread the fungus along with the spores that develop when the fungus produces mushrooms. The mushrooms are really just the fruit, what you need to be concerned with it the growth taking place below the surface. I first noticed these mushrooms on coconut husk chips I had in a terrarium and that was about ten years ago, have had them ever since and never been able to completely eradicate them, presumably because of spores. Never let the mushrooms develop and set spores or you will be forever fighting them. Mike |
