What's up with this?

My H. meliflua has been blooming off and on this summer, those truly unique flowers...

But this morning, I found an open umbel that looks completely washed-out...

Pretty in it's own right (makes me think of candy!), but I'm wondering what would cause this. If it was sitting in full sun, I might consider that maybe that's what washed it out, but it's been in the same place, where it gets bright dappled sun most of the day, all summer. Interesting, huh? Any ideas?

I wonder if there's a genetic componet. If that peduncle makes different flowers each time you could take a cutting and have a new variety!

Well that's an interesting thought, TD! I think I'll mark it to see if it consistently blooms this color.

That's interesting. Mine always blooms the color of the second umbel,i've never had it bloom the dark flowers before.

Oh my, this is certainly a weird twist! I looked up a photo on Hoyor.net and they look much closer to my dark red ones. Odd...

Had it been particularly warm while the buds were developing? I like the look of the light coloured blooms, the nectar stains really stand out.
