You can prune your Hoyas if you desire, of course. It won't hurt them. I do think it helps spur growth in the spring, which is why I never feel like I am setting my plants back when I cut them for trades, as long as they are big enough and I don't cut the same plant over and over.

Some things to keep in mind, though.

Most Hoyas aren't super into branching, so don't expect that you'll often get that result when you cut a vine. It really depends on the species.

Don't cut off the long leafless vines. Several Hoyas throw these ugly bare vines and then later grow a bunch of peduncles on them.

I no longer cut my javanica/multiflora/lasaintha - those upright growing bushy-type Hoyas. They grow in a V and balance growth on both sides like little trees. So, if a multiflora grows a long branch on one side and looks unbalanced, you just have to wait and the next thing it will do is grow a matching branch on the other side. No intervention necessary. They do branch when you cut them, but they frequently loop the new vine clumsily around the cut node in a less-than-attractive way, so it can take them a while to look their best again. Also, the last time I heavily pruned my javanica, it stopped blooming for over 6 months. It basically waited until it was balanced again to bloom. So it was a hideous bloomless unbalanced eyesore and I wanted to stab my eyes out whenever I was in the kitchen. So, I guess what I'm saying is approach the task with care, like you would with a bonsai, not with verve, like you would with an outdoor shrub.
