I avoid using chemical sprays as much as possible (allergies and pets), and have found a couple of household cleaning products that wipe out mealies and other pests.
Simple Green concentrate is non-toxic, biodegradable and harmless to pets. Use a weak dilution to fill suitable sized container for dunking. Support plant with one hand, turn upside down and submerge into solution. Hang or set pot right-side up, and after a few minutes, rinse with gentle spray of water. SG will kill insects and as a bonus, leaves are nice and clean. This can also be used as a spray.
I have also used this method with Pine-Sol. Do not use a pine scented product. The pine oil is what works.
