You CAN actually have the chance to name a hew hoya for real.
Swedish botanist Nathalie Simonsson is currently cataloguing as many species from Papua New Guinea as she can before the habitats are lost. To help fundraise, she is offering 10 lucky people to opportunity to name a new hoya.
She really is amazing!

Hi i'm new to hoyas, got my first 5 over the summer and this forum has been a great help. I'm loving the sailor moon idea. maybe Serenity, or Rini, if it's got little pink flowers! Um...that may be way too nerdy.

Brad not sure what I would name a cultivar/hybrid but I would probably have to see the flowers to decide on a name.
Naming a species I would go the usual route and choose a persons name, a descriptive name to do with a feature of the plant/flower or a place/locations name in case the plant was endemic.

Jooles I found that website last week for the first time, really makes me want to visit Papua New Guinea. A Hoya based trip to learn about habitat and help with collecting and cataloging would be just amazing. thanks for posting the link.

Hi Mike - yes, it is an amazing project, made all the more amazing by the fact that Nathalie is deaf and employs deaf guides to help her. She is so VERY talented (communicates in 10 different languages!) and knows hoyas inside out. Awesome!
The forest looks quite stunning - but also inhospitable. Nathalie had a photo in her last newsletter showing the infected wounds on her legs from the jungle undergrowth and leeches! It takes a certain grit....in persuit of Hoyas!

I'd love to name a hoya after Aunt Irene, it'd have to small, tough, beautiful and utterly unique to match her :)
