David...would you be kind enough to post a picture of your H. polystachya? I received a fabulous cutting from Sara, like you, and I know that Mike (Mn) received one recently as well....I'd love for the forum members to see how amazing this hoya is (those who haven't seen it, that is). The photos on the web just don't do justice to this beauty. Once rooted, it'll be my #1 mostest favoritest hoya. Thanks so much, warm regards, Patrick

RE: Hoya polystachya

I did get my plant and I am a little disappointed. When I re-potted the plant it hardly had any roots. I think the plant will be OK, but I was kind of shocked to see little more than a cutting shoved in a pot.

My plant was also labeled as H. aff. latifolia (IML 1410).

Patrick, as requested here are some pics of my hoya polystachya IML 1410!! I got a little snap happy and couldn't stop myself so there's a total of 5 pics and not really any difference in any of them except a few were without the flash

Mike, i'm glad to hear that your 1410 arrived but sorry to hear that it had issues. I have had the same problem with MANY hoyas purchased from the same vendor.

RE: Hoya polystachya

How big are the leaves on average? I'm having a hard time getting a perspective.

 o
RE: Hoya polystachya

the largest ones are probably between 10-12 inches long and 6-7 inches wide. The plant in the picture started out as a 2 node cutting a little over a year ago. I had some issues getting it going in the beginning but once it took hold,I find that it grows pretty fast.

There's another hoya H. aff clandestina IML 1590 that is very similar to the polystachya IML 1410. The leaves on the 1590 are just as big but I find them to be a little more rounded than those on the 1410.

That's beautiful David...thanks for the measurements on the leaves. I guess that is one Hoya I do NOT need or want,lol..Like Tiger, I had no idea its size? I just don't have that kind of room for hoyas with leaves that BIG!! Thanks for posting.

Gorgeous plant David!
I have a plant that resembles yours but is still small, it came from Paul Shirley's collection and was collected on Sulawesi. I also have another plant that I got from Paul Shirley as Hoya polystachya but it's leaves are different from yours in being more narrow or tear drop shaped. I will try and take a photo of my plant for comparison.

Mike, I also have another clone of polystachya from David Liddle, it's IML 1043. The leaves are nothing at all like the 1410. They are about a third the size.

RE: Hoya polystachya

Well I finally got around to taking that photo. This is the plant I received as Hoya polystachya from Paul Shirley. I have a feeling that my other unidentified species from Sulawesi is the same species as Davids Hoya polystachya although my plant is still small. These are truly beautiful Hoyas but once they start growing they take up a fair bit of space.

A new leaf, this one is going to be huge.

Wow, I have fallen for another one.

Dee...the plants are actually far nicer than pictures can depict...the leaves are SO large and shiny, beautiful venation and very dark green...a most stunning plant. I wish David had placed his hand or a dinner plate next to his pictures...just to give everyone an idea of the size of this beauty. But, thanks so much, David, for posting the pictures...and for the sizes...at first I thought your plant was H. latifolia...as the picture makes the leaves look rather small...which is far from reality. Dee, Sara plans on selling another cutting on ebay this coming Spring...of course, there'll be dozens of people trying to win this one!!! I got so lucky in winning this cutting from Sara as there were very few bidders...which amazed me! Though it's a large Hoya, it's worth having simply for the obvious beauty of this plant...with or without blooms!! Patrick

Jan, growing is not the word for it, leaps and bounds is more like it.

Patrick, I am so glad that you are still thrilled with your cutting of Hoya aff. polystachya IML 1410. I know that pictures really don't do this hoya justice at all, but I had some time this morning, and thought I would try to get some comparison shots. My dh was kind enough to hold out some leaves for me, and I have a side by side photo of aff. polystachya IML 1410 and polystachya IML 1043.

Here is a leaf photo:

Here is the whole plant:

Here is Hoya aff. polystachya IML 1410 on the left, and another polystachya IML 1043 in the clay pot that dh is holding on the right. Pretty good comparison on the size difference in the leaves.

Patrick, I hope that this helps a little with the size issue when it comes to this hoya. It is pretty amazing in person though isn't it?

RE: Hoya polystachya-continued

By the way, the large leaf in the last photo is now living at Patrick's house...That picture was sent to a bidder who wanted to know the difference in the two different IML#'s on Hoya polystachya.

In the second photo, you can see Hoya acuta albomarginata on the right, just an idea for further size comparison.

Cheers,
S

Sara....thank you a million times...those pictures are tremendous!!! Posting the pictures was so considerate of you. It really helps to see the actual size of the leaves with your DH's hand and another hoya next to the plant for comparison sake. I love this hoya more every day and can't thank you enough!! Again, thanks and Bless you, Patrick

RE: Hoya polystachya

Patrick, you are very welcome! I have been just as thrilled with hoyas as you are with this one, and isn't it just awesome when the thrill lingers? Sort of like "perma grin" really. Ha. I am assuming that your cutting rooted for you?

I really do wish you could post photos, I would love to see how your cutting is doing.

Patrick, you are a million times welcome, and honestly I am glad that one of my hoyas has gone to such a loving home.

RE: Hoya polystachya

Wow Sara!! Those are the biggest hoya leaves I've ever seen!!

Even though I don't have room for such a large leaf hoya, I really wish I could see one in person just because it truly is a beautiful plant. Thanks for sharing your pictures with us.

Patrick, congrats and enjoy that Huge and beautiful hoya!!

RE: Hoya polystachya

Sara...I'm not sure if the cutting has rooted or not, however, the plant looks identical to what you sent me...it has never yellowed or dropped any leaves...it just stays stunningly beautiful!! Now that I have my new computer, my next purchase will be a camera and then the very long, long time to learn to post pictures....H. Polystachya will be my first post!! Fondly, Patrick
