Need a plant recommendation

Posted by geosdee Zone 8 FL Panhandle (My Page) on

Hello all,

I would like some recommendations for a hoya. this hoya will be inside and in a location that doesn't get alot of light. It will not be close to a window, so just everyday light in a house. Would there be a particular hoya or 2 that might like these requirements?

Thanks,

Dee

If a Hoya was in that setting you described I don't believe it would thrive at all and wouldn't bloom for sure.
Here is a link of low light houseplants. You might try one of those in your setting and get better results.,,,,Debbie

I have some hoyas that are not directly in front of windows and they do fine. I have a very big variegated hoya carnosa sitting next to my computer that is growing vines like crazy. I guess it all depends on the natural lighting in your house. Is your house very dark with all the windows open or is it light? If your house is very dark then I would either recommend a snake plant or a zz plant. You could always try a shoplight for extra lighting, they sell them at lowes for cheap. I grow high light palms and banana plants under shop lights and they seem to be fine. Can you put your plants outside in the summer? I usually put all my hoyas out on my front porch in the summer.

I hope this helps you out.

Dee, I have many hoyas growing on inside walls of my house, and as the windows are all full of hoyas, the light is very indirect indeed.

These hoyas now only grow, but thrive and bloom also. I don't agree with the theory that hoyas need direct light to do well. In nature hoyas grow in both high light and understory conditions, and plants adapt to where they are.

I grow Hoyas montana, rigida, subquintuplinervis, all of my pottsii's, pimenteliana, villosa, neo-calidonica, aldrichii, australis, cv. optimistic, and many others on inside, no light walls.

They do fine with basic indoor lighting and the little bit they get from the windows. Just adjust your watering to account for them possibly not drying out as fast.

Dee,

If you want them to bloom, they probably won't do that well unless in front of a window. But there are many that look great whether they bloom or not. Like pubicalyx 'Pink Silver.' It actually looks best if grown a shadier spot. Dischidia oiantha also does well in low light conditions. I have some growing in my sunroom in only bright reflected light and they look great. DS-70 does well in lower light conditions, but isn't likely to bloom.
