Pubicalyx cultivars

Denise

Do you find that pubicalyx like to grow in late summer and fall? I up-potted three of my cultivars this year (they had all gotten severely rootbound) and maybe some of it is that now they're getting more "settled" in their pots and starting to grow. But it seems to me that they are more intense growers later in the season than most species. All of mine are putting out lots of new growth right now, and forming lots of new peduncles. I hope to have some flowering going on soon. I'm attaching a photo of a vine of new leaves on my 'RHP' that are nearly black. They're all much happier with some extra "leg room" now!

    Hi Denise!
Very pretty new growth. When do yours bloom? I have an unk cultivar that bloomed in mid summer, one flower cluster only. Do they typically bloom year-round or just seasonally, and then put out the new growth now as you have observed?

My RHP has some spindly new growth now too, although it didn't grow much this summer. I understand that new blooms more likely occur on new growth?

Denise, no, mine publicalyx definitely do most of their growth and flowering during the warmer months. They start in late spring and go gang busters till right about now.

As for flowering, they are pretty much constantly in bloom from early summer though fall.

    Hi Denise,

It's the same for me, most of the growth I had the last months. I got 3 pubicalyx, all 3 came as rooted cuttings from Paul Shirley earlier this year. This picture of pubicalyx GPS 282 I took last 16th august, and now the branches are over a meter long. Same story with the other 2 pubicalyx (red buttons & pink silver)

Some nice photos! Ingrid, I find the pubicalyx cultivars grow VERY fast and become large quickly. Yours looks like it's well on it's way to becoming a monster!

Kathy, I see yours is one of the clones with more silver flecking. Mine has a spot here, a spot there, more like my old carnosa. I've seen some photos of 'RHP' that have almost as much splashy-flecking as my 'PS'. And as for blooms, they come from new peduncles and old peduncles, but yes, you have to let the vines do their thing to get the new peduncles. At least pubicalyx's leaves fill in pretty much right away so you aren't typcially looking at long, leafless vines hoping for a peduncle or two...

Hi Denise I find that my pubicalyx are putting out some new growth now, maybe due to the weather being cooler than it has been and being confused! Like me sometimes! The PS I got has started new growth and is a beauty of dark and highly splashed leaves! ~ Mary

Mine are bit unwieldy, so they're kind of tucked away, and I haven't noticed when they grow. I'll have to go look and see what they've been up to when I get home. But I'm loving the pictures everyone!

Mary, what conditions are you growing that PS in? I know a couple people have posted really good threads of publicalyx cultivars grown in disparate lighting.

My RHP has gone mad with new growth this past summer. No signs of blooms yet, but it's become a favorite of mine. I love the dark purple leaves of RHP.

I'm with GG, Mary. Do tell us your growing conditions! My PS is in a somewhat brightly lit hallway.

I got a cutting of Red Buttons earlier this summer from Joni. My larger plant is now deceased, and after I got it in a trade, it bloomed shortly after. The cuttings I took from it I gave to a friend bloomed a few months ago. I'm happy to have it back :).

Sorry to ramble on, but the pubicalyxes are some of the Hoyas I'm more passionate about.

    Mary,

It looks like the PS likes the grow lights! Did you get that clone from me? It sure looks like my super-splashy clone. It looks like grow lights must be like the bright, indirect light my dining room PS gets - it seems to be the splashiest, like yours is looking. Very nice! However, I don't get the dark new leaves with the lighting in my LR. Hmmm... I sure like that!

None of my big publicalyxes are growing, but all of my little ones are. (Hmmm...) I'm glad to see the nice velvety young vines showing up because I don't like the look of the rough hoary ones.

    @ Brad

So glad you got another Red Buttons so you don't have to miss your old one. I find it difficult to forget dead Hoyas and feel compelled to replace them, even if they weren't particular favorites. Not that a sweet lil Red Buttons would fall in that category!

GG, yes I know what you mean :). I still would love to have another mindorensis. I miss the blooms on it. I think I need to work on my wish list again for next spring. I would LOVE to aquire some more cuttings of Red Buttons since my cutting is on the smaller side. I would have to say the pubicalyxes are my hands down favorites for the combo of flowers and foilage.

Pink Silver grows in a pot setting in an old umbrella stand that I got for a dollar at a local antique shop. RHP is in a pot hanging in one of those old fashioned macrame plant hangers that I adore :). Tiny Red Buttons stands on a three tiered plant stand mom bought me out of a catalog.

What all pubicalyxes do you have, GG?

    I have...

    'Bright One'
    'RHP' (purchased as 'Chimera')
    'Pink Silver'
    'Red Buttons'
    'Black Dragon'
    'Pink Dragon'
    and...
'Plain Jane' (aka solid green publicalyx) :)

I really like those tiered plant stands. I don't really have enough room that I can even contemplate using interesting stands and pots, which is a shame because I collect antique ceramic animal planters. With all the plants I have, most of them still stand empty on my bookshelves! /shakes head

I'm most excited to see the Plain Jane bloom, so I try to keep it in ideal conditions. The rest of the pubs have to catch as catch can, because that's the whole point of having pubs, right? That they're tough!

GG, wow! I am intrigued by the "Plain Jane" and "Pink Dragon" as I have never heard of those. I used to have a little cutting of "Bright One" a few years ago and I lost it as well as "Black Dragon", which I miss terribly :(.

I have two plant stands. One is wooden and from the same place as my umbrella stand "planter" and the other from the catalog is smaller, metal, collapsible, and holds smaller pots. The wooden one sets in front of the south window right next to me and the metal one is in my bedroom off to the side of the east facing window.

You're right, they are some of the tougher Hoyas. Definitely in my top 5 list :).

Yes that PS is one from Denise. It is under grow lights in a yogurt container in the standard soil mix of potting soil, retail orchid bag mix and perlite, a third of each. Using miracle grow on this one. It is under 12 hrs of standard grow lux lights. About 8 inches below the tubes. The splash is definitely attractive and I presume the darkness will fade and turn to the pink tones seen in the older leaves. I also love the pubicalyx and have pretty much the same as GG excluding the Dragons. I have a glut of RHP as labeled upon arrival, no blooms but very large.

Yes Brad I cannot wait to see my recent acquisition of Red Buttons bloom too for the scent I hear about. I have recently gotten the Plain Jane and it is doing nicely after rooting it in the gel gems. I also have a cv Jungle Garden I hope to see bloom next spring too! The Jane is the one I want to see bloom most of all. I understand it may be a Paul Shirley variety and am open to the challenge to bloom it but this is not a confirmation only a hope based on my researching it.

I have three large noid pubs and they are putting out very thin vines now with dark mottled coffee colored leaves filling in slowly. Windows are southwest to west natural light. In the spring I plan to do a few shots of bloom boosters with them and see what happens. Celebrate St Patty's eh?

The 'Plain Jane' is so (casually) dubbed by the person I received the cutting from. It's a solid green one and very pretty. I'm not really sure what the conventions are for naming Hoya cultivars, but I like the monicker personally. :) Maybe it will have flowers like the infamous panamon kreel photo, maybe it will look totally different.... there's no way of telling as it hasn't bloomed yet!

The 'Pink Dragon' is one of the Forest Treasure pubs, sister to the Black and White (celata) dragons. You can see some gorgeous pictures of it in bloom on Doug's site as well as the explanation of the celata/Pink Dragon Forest Treasures mixup. Mixup or not, it's as cute as a cupcake and a party dress combined.

Mary, good luck with your Plain Jane and Jungle Garden (yet another Hoya to add to my wish list). If I had to compare the scent of Red Buttons, it reminds me of a Tootsie Roll. It'll be a loooong time before my cutting blooms.

GG,Oooooh! Those are so pretty! Loooooove those blooms! Funny you should mention the cuteness of the cupcake and party dress combo. I'm watching Olivia Newton-John belt out the ballad "Suspended In Time" and her dress is very close to the darker shade of pink in the blooms :). Maybe if I get one in the future, I'll nickname it Olivia.

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned how much I like publicalyx and GG you are making me droll with those links. Next spring I will be on the hunt!

Btw, my Plain Jane almost bloomed this summer, silly me cut off the peduncle. Oh well one of these days.

Just think one could have a whole Hoya collection of different publicalyx cultivars.

    @ Renee

lol!! What a shame. Well, I'm sure it will get back to business soon. I can't wait!

I know someone on here used to always say they only collected publicalyxes, but I don't know where they went. It certainly would be a beautiful little collection if someone collected every one they could lay hands on, and gave them exclusive dibs on space to grow.

    @ Mary

Hehe. They are an inspiration to me, too. :) My Pink Dragon is still so small it could fit in a teacup. I bet it will take off in a little bit, like Black Dragon did.
