hoya cuttings?

Posted by coyle (My Page) on

Can I just put the hoya cuttings in good potting soil or do I need to use some special techniques? I've done it this way in spring but now it's fall (still florida though.) Also, do you think they will do good indoors once rooted?

RE: hoya cuttings?

Hi Coyle, that is how I root almost all my cuttings(in my own potting mix)I do however have an "Aquarium Hoya nursery", just for added humidity...although I live in central fl and probably don't really need it. I've rooted cuttings "outside" the hoya nursery before with success also. Sometimes it just depends on what you're rooting, some in my opinion needs a little more humidity than others.

I grow many hoyas inside my house(FL room), bright indirect light...I also grow some outside(under trees) and some in my open(roofed) entryway. I only bring them inside when the temps get below 40°. Many growers grow their hoyas inside almost all year if not all year.

Well, when I got the mother plant I was able to section off 6 large pieces with root on the end; probably about 6' each. Wonder if I would've been better to have done cuttings, but liked saving it all and having roots. It was in a soil starved rootbound pot and is too light green but I will put some root stimulator on it later today and see how it goes. I have some others from a family member from cuttings that are really nice with a pinkish color in them, those were cuttings and I just stuck them in a pot outside and they have rooted. I've got a light meter coming in the mail, then I can tell how much light I have inside so for now they are under the crepe myrtle where they get a little bit of direct light (too much for my moth orchids.)

Well my hoya's are all outside in the screened patio. I just don't get enough indirect light for indoor plants. I had a couple inside but they did'nt do well, moved them out to the patio and they did much better.
When temps. occationally dip down into the low 40's then I worry. Out come the warm mist humidifiers and a few days and nights in the greenhouse may be nessessary.

Hi Coyle,
I have several rooted cuttings, and I started them all by sticking them in the soil. There is another thread above that mentions the importance of keeping the soil moist to prevent dehydration. I have never tried rooting them in water, although it seems some people are successful doing it this way.

The last cuttings I got (TY Nancy) I experimented with a terrarium. They did well in that too. But in my opinion, it didn't make that big of a difference as far as time goes. It still took about 3 weeks.

I live in Montana and to date have never lost a single cutting while trying to root it.

Good luck and hopefully you will be a rooting machine in no time. . .

I've found the quickest, easiest way is to stick the cutting into soil, and then stick the whole pot into a large ziploc bag.

Been successful with that so far!

Alpanther,

Appx. how many weeks does it take you to get good roots with this method? How long do you keep it in the ziplock bag, and how often do you water the soil?

Thanks!

RE: hoya cuttings?

Pug,
I used to root all of my hoyas in a pot of soil or peat/perilite mix and then put the pot in a Ziploc bag. I had a number of cuttings rot doing this (mainly from sellers in Hawaii) so I now root all my cuttings in the open air. I think that all the light the plants get growing in the open in Hawaii and then being put into a closed bag with a lot of humidity is too much for the cuttings. I have only lost one cutting since changing over to rooting in the open air (an Eriostemma cutting from geosdee) and I think it was due to the time of year and just being too cool here for the plant.

Thanks for your insights Mike(MN)...appreciate it. I have done them in my Hoya Aquarium and open air like you stated but always curious how others root them and see how long it takes with certain methods. I lost a cutting here or there both ways, so I guess we can't win them all. Thanks again!
