These are the ones that have flowered for me so far... I've had to put my nose right up to the flower except for Lacunosa...the only one I can smell(inside the house)smells slightly like gardenia/jasmine. So wondering if growing outside diminishes the smell somehow or just can't be smelled because of all the surroundings?

KP,KQ...light floral scent. I grow these outside.
RHP and P.Silver...mild scent(also smells floral)also grown outside.
Obscura...can't really smell much(also outside)
Obovata...didn't smell anything either.
Pottsii...honestly can't remember if it has a scent?
Wayetti...smells a little like red roses(grown outside)
Brevialata...no scent that I can tell? (outside)

Maybe its my nose,lol...

My EA Bilobata/DS-70 smells like butterscotch but faintly, maybe cause it is outside

Carnosa - chocolate but I have to stick my nose on it.
Lacunosa heavy scent but can't place what it smells like
Tanna Island didn't smell
Iris Marie also does not smell, she is blooming again, 2nd time in about 3 months
affinis didn't have a smell to me either nor did ruthie.
Hmmm maybe my smeller isn't working right.

lacunosa is a very strong carnations smell.

hueschkeliana is sweet buttery to butterscotch smell.

serpens was a faint musky smell to me. I didn't like it.

bella I don't remember a smell.

I always want to know what things smell like and appreciate hearing the experiences of others...to me:

bella has a slight sweet fresh scent...very delicate

carnosa has a "dark" tropical smell...I can just picture humid thick rainforest when I smell it...

sp. bicolor smells exactly like a fresh lime...an amazing smell for a hoya, but the flowers only last a couple of days..

lacunosa reminds me of a mixture of incense and night blooming jasmine (cestrum nocturnum)...love it...

nummulariodes smells, to me, like the milkweed out in the vacant lot...sweet, honey, and a little spice.

rigida is very spicey (clove and cinnamon) and very strong...another one of my favorites...

cummingiana I found to be very strong and very nasty...sorry...I smelled 3 in 1 oil, burning rubber, and freeze dried carrots (the kind you get in a packet with those dried soups)...ick...

David I hope you don't mind but I wanted to add your scent descriptions to our scented Hoyas reference thread.

Some of my very favorites for fragrance are::
lambii--vanilla spice
obscura--fruit loops cereal
heuschkeliana (ylw form) buttered popcorn--seriously
subcalva--grape juice
campanulata--lemon pledge furniture polish

What does australis smell like? I've heard and read that it can smell like vanilla-chocolate to honeysuckle. All I
know is that it is very strongly scented. My favorite hoya
fragrance is lacunosa. It just smells so clean and fresh like spring! I just love that scent! So have my friends and family!

Brad,

My australis ssp. tenuipes has over 50 buds developing. Got half a dozen or so last year, and the fragrance on those few was enough to knock my socks off, so I imagine I'll be swimming in the fragrance very soon! I'm not good at comparing scents, but I'd describe it as spicey and sweet, and very, very overpowering. I may have to keep my GH door closed when they all start opening if it gets too strong. Now, if I could only figure out why ssp. australis doesn't want to flower... (I've had it many, MANY more years than tenuipes...)

Twice today I have noticed the blooms of my Crytoceras floribundum were fragrant. I noticed the scent from a distance of about six or seven feet, once at lunch time and again tonight when I got home from work. The scent reminds me of a soft sweet musk.
Has anyone else experienced this with their Hoya multiflora or related plants?

Hi mike This summer I did noticed a very faint smell from my EA one.It was only when I got up close but thought mybe I was imagining it because I always read that it did not have a fragrance. It reminded me of sort of sweet grass.I am not good at explaining smells so maybe musky lol.

Mike---That's very interesting...I never noticed any fragrance when I had H. multiflora, but the new Species Hoya book says that it has a very strong fragrance...I always wondered if the Swedes had super noses, or if conditions were so different there that it somehow created a scent we don't get here...hmmmm...

Shelley I have sniffed those flowers many times in the past without noticing a thing so you can imagine my surprise when I tracked the scent back to this Hoya. I know that many of us have different species that we call Hoya multiflora so maybe that has something to do with it, either that or some plants have a scent while others don't.

H. tsangii -- scent reminds me of a "butter cream" candle

A common problem w/ IDing a scent is often one scent can be very different for different people. There is an orchid I have whose fragrance gets a host of different reactions. One guy at work thought it reeked of fish. Another also thought it 'stinky' but not of fish. Yet another found it pungent but not unappealing. My sis and I found it to smell of melon. My mom disagreed with us but found the fragrance to be pleasant but elusive as to ID.........

Very true and because scent is closely linked to memories there is more at play than just trying to come up with a good scent comparison. I am sure often times we misidentify a scent because of a memory but I also agree that different people truly have a differing sense of smell. The funny thing is that I bet everyone can identify scents like brewing coffee or buttered popcorn but those are scents that we are more familiar with and they are much more easily recalled from memory.
I have some Bulbophyllum orchids that smell like fish but not any Hoyas. There are definitely some stinkers in the Hoya family (Stapeliads) and several within the genus as well.
