Hoya Shopping Dilemma

Posted by moonwolf 6 (My Page) on

Hi everyone,

The Hawaii vendor has a large Red Buttons for sale which is tempting me. I would like another pubicalyx in my collection and this one is blooming size. Well, there was a bloom in the picture anyway. Should I go for it or try to find somplace cheaper? Gardino's is selling it too.
I'm only going to buy a plant if no one offers me any cuttings on the exchange forum. What to do?

Brad,

I'd go for a smaller plant because pubicalyx cultivars are fast growers. Plus there's an awful lot of satisfaction in growing your plants into specimen size plants and bringing them to flowering yourself. Just my opinion...

Denise, I know what you mean. My Pink Silver is just a little thing itself and it's slow now but it's sprouting new leaves and not vines. I e-mailed Gardino's and asked her the cost of shipping. I haven't got a response yet but I've e-mailed them a few times in the past and they are nice people to deal with. I'm just hoping I can get a couple plants before Christmas.

Brad, the advise Denise gave is good. (she offered me the same advise but I didn't lissten :(.

Also, these are so common, I bet you can get a trade/cutting going with someone.

I bought a large Pub. RB from the Hawiian vendor, it was $25.00. It is a nice plant mind you, but I also have the rooted cuttings I got as a collection from Joni and they are growing great so I should have waited and saved my $25.00. Oh well. Mine isn't anywhere near blooming. But when it does (if) it probably won't mean as much as when the ones I grew myself bloom.

Come spring I'll have cuttings for you. Just remind me. . . case I forget.

Theres never any easy fix when it comes to satisfying a hoya craving. . .

Good luck,

Maid~

Hi Debi,

I sent Pug an e-mail asking her for some cuttings. She wrote me back offering me some RHP cuttings (of course, I said I'll take them). I'll still take some cuttings though come spring. Thanks everybody!

I got my red buttons from cowboyflowerman. It is small but it was cheap. :)

Here's what I've decided. I will be going to Lowe's and Home Depot tommorrow to see what hoyas they have. I don't want to send for plants and have them freeze on their way here. I'm hoping to find wayetti (AKA kentiana), tsangii or shepherdii. Wish me luck!

Brad do you have an e-mail address you can attach to your profile here? We can't contact you to offer cuttings or plants. Where in zone 6 are you? If plants are packed properly with insulation or heat packs you might still be able to receive a few more before Thanksgiving???

Lady, I live in PA, where the winters are bitter. I just updated my member page so you could send me an e-mail.
Looking forward to hearing from you. If you have pub. Red Buttons or Royal Hawaiian Purple, let me know. I really don't have anything to trade except some flower seeds.
I have a wanted message over at the exchange forum.

Well, I didn't get any hoyas (Lowe's didn't have any and HD only had two baskets of KP and a curtsii) but I did get a white Crown of Thorns and a pack of orchid trellises (2 per pack)at Lowe's. All in all, it wasn't a total loss. I did want to point out that I did see two baskets of dishidia at Lowe's. Better luck next time.
