And the australis ssp. tenuipes is opening in droves...

The scent is WAY too powerful with this many. I have to close the GH at night. Which reminds me - need to go take a Zyrtec!

great pic!!! i noticed today that mine is also starting to open. I hate when so many clusters of flowers open at one time in the gh,it can give you a headache!!! I have an acuta that tends to open almost all of it's flowers at one time also and it is very overpowering when in bloom!!

RE: Grand opening

Ooooh, pretty! Denise, your GH must be flooded with that scent. Is that the plant you'll be sending me cuttings from?

RE: Grand opening

That's the one, Brad. And it's not just the GH - the smell hits me when I walk in the front door, which is about 40 feet from the plant!

Just gorgeous Denise!! What it must be like it person. I have a small one of this, now I really can't wait till I see blooms, hopefully not too far in the future!

Thanks for posting!!

RE: Grand opening

Pug - this is one of the fastest bloomers I've ever grown, so I don't think you'll have to wait too long! Everyone who grows Hoyas should start with this one - it would give them such great confidence, they would never have those "worry" feelings that I think affect our plants' growth!

RE: Grand opening

Kelly,

I have trouble describing scents - people always come up with a "smells like..." for Hoya flowers, but I've never had one I could put my finger on that definitively. To me, it smells sweet but spicey when I'm close up, but from across the house, it seems more pungent.

Awesome, Denise!! My "tenuipes" is huge...and grows like crazy...but, it's never even formed a peduncle. I'm envious of your ability to get things to bloom...I honestly believe you could get a wooden broom handle to bloom!! LOL. Thanks for sharing! Patrick

Wonderful blooms, Denise!
Like half-domes of lace! And the number is spectacular.

Some hoyas smell sickly sweet to me...spicy, yes, with an overwhelmingly sugary, floral scent, like Agave nectar.

RE: Grand opening

The only flowers that I know that smell sickly sweet to me are both outdoor flowers: lilacs and honeysuckle. Between the two, I prefer the honeysuckle.

Lacunosa and carnosa are the only hoya flowers that I've have smelled. I really enjoy the fragrance of lacunosa!

RE: Grand opening

Yikes. I may have to get one of these. I say yikes because I really don't need to add to my wish list, and don't know where I'd even put it if I got it. Will that stop me though? Probably not. Hence, yikes : )

RE: Grand opening

Sue,

Mine is perfectly happy growing on a trellis on the north end of my GH, where it doesn't get much direct sun - mostly bright indirect light. It dries out very fast, so I consider it a real water-guzzler. And that's about it!
