Which Hoya Are You?

greedygh0st

No, I'm not actually going to invent an online quiz to determine which Hoya you guys are, although I thought a lot about it and actually assigned some Hoyas to some of you.

My actual question(s) are a lot different and it's all because I love Hoya paziae. In fact, I've arranged things so that paziae is the first plant I look at in the morning and the last one I look at at night. I got it as a cutting this spring, so it's not that big and it doesn't have any more sentimental value than any other Hoya, but it's just so.... *right*.

So, my questions are:

1. What's a Hoya that you consider a bit of an unsung hero** that everyone should have in their collection?

2. What's your favorite Hoya you've gotten from a trade (particularly if it's one you didn't specifically start the trade to get)?

3. What's a Hoya that you bought specifically for the flower, but ended up liking particularly for its other qualities?

4. What's the weirdest grounds you've ever had for buying a Hoya?

**I'm still playing with Mike's Rock Star analogy

My answers:

1. paziae

2. aldrichii

3. patella

4. I collect Hoyas which might occur naturally in Vietnam. I also collect Hoyas whose names remind me of German. Like schneei and blaschernaezii and heuschkeliana.

Hmmm, interesting questions! Which hoya did you pick for me? I'm really curious to know!

    My answers:

    1. All my hoyas are pretty common ones but I would have to choose pubicalyx.
    2. The trade I did this summer with dmichael! I only asked for a couple and he sent me more than that!
    3. pubicalyx Pink Silver or fungii (I love the foilage on both plants!)
    4. I love star shaped objects (celestial objects for that matter; GG, you can guess where this came from) and of course that's what most hoya flowers are shaped like but they're in all different colors, shapes and fragrances.

    Good one GG.

Everyone should have Lacunosa and DS-70

I loved receiving Merrillii in a trade unexpectedly

AleyasGarden sent Obscura x Lacunosa and I love the foliage on this plant(not the same as SRQ 'Sunrise')

No weird reason for buying hoyas but I love your German reasoning. I collect for fragrance and based on the looks of the flower. Maybe I have undiagnosed Aspergers? idk

Brad: Could you be anything but publicalyx cv. Pink Silver? What was your favorite cutting dmichael on that trade?

David: Merrillii is a good one! And I'll have to look into this Aleya obscura x lacunosa. I have to say, I like lacunosa more than I would ever have predicted and will collect as many varieties as I can.

It is interesting to me when people collect based on fragrance. That aspect is always an unintended consequence in my collections. Perhaps I am still getting used to acquiring plants with the potential for strong smells. It's a great reason, though, I know, because I CANNOT leave heuschkeliana alone when it blooms. I get in its face every chance I get.

I also really like the name myrmekopa because it reminds me of the German word murmeln (to mumble) which feels like holding marbles between my lips every time I say it.

    1. What's a Hoya that you consider a bit of an unsung hero** that everyone should have in their collection?

Nummularioides. it is finally making it's way into a lot of hoya collections but doesn't get the praise that I feel it truly deserves. It's a spectacular hoya. It is very easy to care for,it doesn't grow so fast that it'll take over everything in it's path in little to no time as a lot of hoyas tend to do. The foliage is quite nice being about the size of a U.S. nickle and having fuzz all over it. It's a fall blooming hoya and tends to open all of it's flowers at one time. There have been times when my plant had so many flowers open on it that you almost couldn't see the foliage.

    2. What's your favorite Hoya you've gotten from a trade (particularly if it's one you didn't specifically start the trade to get)?

most of the hoya trades that I have participated in arrived only with what I requested in the shipment. There have been a few times when I would get extras but they always seemed to be things that I already had. I'd have to say that my favorite though would most likely be H. polystachya IML 1410.

    3. What's a Hoya that you bought specifically for the flower, but ended up liking particularly for its other qualities?

Well that would be hoya lambii of course!!!! The flower is probably my number 1 favorite of all the hoyas that I grow and the fragrance is just as awesome. To my nose they are sweet and spicy at the same time. The scent is a combination of vanilla and spice, maybe cloves or cinnamon,I haven't quite figured that part out yet!! The leaves are also a favorite of mine as there is no other hoya with foliage like that of hoya lambii!

    4. What's the weirdest grounds you've ever had for buying a Hoya?

I buy a lot of hoyas from a friend in Thailand who goes into the Thai jungle and collects hoyas. I try to buy from him each spring when he has gone into the jungle and found new hoyas. The plant is new and hasn't made it's way around the block yet!!!

Now I am wondering what Hoya I might be, either a fussy or temperamental one or a down right weed. LOL

    1. An unsung Hero - I think that Hoya DS-70 is a very common species in our collections but it's an easy grower, prolific bloomer and gets beautiful foliage in bright light.

    2. Favorite Hoya from a trade - This would probably have been Hoya subcalva, a piece broke off a friends plant so they rooted it and surprised me with it. I had been wanting that Hoys for a long time.

    3. A Hoya bought for the blooms but ended up liking for it's other qualities. - This would have to be Hoya tsangii syn. odetteae. This Hoya has the most graceful looking growth habit and very dark green lance shaped leaves.

    4. The weirdest grounds for buying a Hoya. - I have often wondered about the Hoyas that are listed with no description and only a catalog number so I have many of those. Often I get plants that are probably Hoya incurvula or brevialata but sometimes it's something totally different. I do often order species with tiny flowers because I just love the Acanthostemma section plants, not sure if that's weird but I think most others go for the larger flowered species.

GG, I'd have to say that mindorensis was my favorite cutting that I got from dmichael (it bloomed shortly after I got it). Pubicalyx RHP and fungii are tied for second favorites. Cv. Minibelle (which has unfortunately died and had clinging flowers to a peduncle when I opened the box!), verticillata, limoniaca, pubicalyx Royal Hawaiian Purple and diversifolia (which now belongs to you and your grandmother) are the other ones that I got for him.

So, I match Pink Silver then? I'm trying to think of words or phrases that both match me and Pink Silver.
