Missed another one!

Well My Hoya caudata finally flowered after budding up on a few different peduncles and dropping the buds over the past six months. This time around there was a nice sized peduncle with seven buds and they made it all the way to maturity so I was very happy. The flowers were right beside a leaf and perfect for a photo, they opened up and were rather flat so I though I would wait a little and see of they opened a little more. Well I learned my lesson! The blooms lasted one full day and then started to close and I though well maybe they close up at night. Needless to say I missed my window of opportunity because I was busy with an Orchid Society engagement and tonight while watering the buds dropped off.

I hope I get another chance to enjoy this one when I can take the time to get a few photos. Has anyone else experienced such fleeting Hoya blooms? Have you missed a special plant bloom for one reason or another, any stories you might want to share?

Mike

Oh, man, I'm sorry! Would have loved to have seen them! For me sp Sulawesi flowers don't last very long.

Oh, that bites, Mike! Some do have a markedly shorter life than others, though I don't recall any I grow that only last a day. But I did miss a "first opening" completely once when I went to visit my brother for a week. It was a picta (my first attempt) and it looked great, and had it's first bud coming on. I was SO hoping it would wait until I got back to open, but when I got home, they were done and still barely clinging to the peduncle. Then I lost the plant a few months later. Well, I got another one late this summer from Gardino's, and I've managed to kill that one, too. Guess that one's just not in the cards for me...

Oooh Mike...I'm so sorry! I LOVE Caudata and would love to have seen your flower. Mine is just finally starting to grow...this one took forever to grow a new leaf...took about 6 months or more. Now its finally growing and I can actually call it a small plant instead of a (2) leaf cutting, lol. Very much looking forward to a bloom...someday!

I am still hoping that another set of buds will develop and next time around there will be no procrastination on my part. I really wanted to share a photo of this one because of how beautiful the leaves are.

Pug I hear you, this is one slow Hoya. I got mine almost two years ago and it has only developed three new leaves. There has been two small peduncles but they were hidden behind leaves and both eventually fell off for some reason. I guess that even though this one is slow it seems to bloom early.

Hey Mike, I'm sure you will get blooms again, like you said you will be much better prepared with the camera next time, lol. Thanks for the encouraging news about it being an early bloomer. I've had my cutting since Oct.08. I'm just thrilled its growing! Keep us posted!
