Removing lilac bush-any chance to xplant?

(Yup- me again)

Grandma planted a lilac bush 20 years ago. I have now inherited a HUGE (12 foot high, 6 foot diameter) sitting RIGHT on top of the underground pipe which takes water runoff away from the house. Three years ago we had out first basement flood in 20 years which we later discovered was b/c of the roots which had clogged up the pipe. I hate to do it but we have to remove the bush. I read this should be done in the winter while the plant is dormant so we're about to tackle it this upcoming long weekend (Feb). Anyone know if there's a way to save the bush for transplanting in the spring? Could I take a root ball and leave it in the garage for the rest of winter and plant it when the ground softens?
