Local source for witch hazel and woodland plants?

Does anyone know of a good local source for woodland plants? Also, I've been thinking about getting a witch hazel bush or tree. I don't want to order on line if I can avoid it because I can't stand having to pay for shipping and because I think the plants you get are generally smaller. I know that Fair Acres (not Adams), which is just over the boarder in Sussex, NJ had some woodland stuff last year, maybe this year they'll have more. I'm pretty sure they didn't have witch hazel. Also, does anyone know the difference between the various types of witch hazels? I want one that grows about 8' tall and that is very showy and has a good scent. Of course, it has to be hardy for our zone.

Hi, I haven't been to this nursery yet, but one of the instructors at the IES in Millbrook said they had great plants, and all native. I certainly plan on getting there sometime this spring. I should think they would have a good selection of woodland plantings: http://www.catskillnativenursery.com/index.html Also, the Dutchess County Conservation Center sells various shrub and tree seedlings once each year for very good prices - these are bare-root seedlings. The website is : http://www.dutchess.ny.nacdnet.org/products.htm However, you must go to their location in Millbrook to pick up the plants. But, being able to get a bundle of 10 Witch Hazel seedlings for $11 could be worth it :-) Philomena

Cooperative extension gives out the native witch hazel. There are a number of hybrids with better color though not as hardy.

Wow! That Catskill nursery looks like it would be worth the drive. I'll have to check it our. About the cooperative extension..Is that the one in Middletown? Do I just call them up and ask them about the free witch hazel?
