What veggies are you starting right about now?

If you're buried under a mountain of snow like I am (17" here in Chappaqua!!), you're dreaming of spring and fresh beautiful veggies and plants. I stopped by my local nursery today to load up on this season's veggie seeds, and as I sat down with my spreadsheet I got to wondering what my other pals in the Hudson Valley might be starting soon.

Since we're adding a new 128 square feet of vegetable/herb garden this year, I have a LOT planned!

Starting hot and sweet peppers indoors this week. Also planning to start broccoli indoors in a week or maybe two, and contemplating onions from seed this year too. Herbs are going to wait til March, and then it will be time to direct sow the cool weather stuff. I use purchased tomato plants, but will be growing cukes, zucchini, yellow crookneck squash, butternut squash, carrots, radishes and several beans from seed.

I'm not starting anything just yet. However, I will be doing some tomatoes and Bell peppers for sure. Basil too.

Well I started my peppers indoors, and then decided to try wintersowing (in a 2 liter bottle) a few broccoli and parsley seeds. It will be a fun experiment! I'll probably give in and start more broccoli and parsley in peat pots tomorrow though.
I guess I'm impatient!

We're in Poughkeepsie, and we just started 2 trays of assorted veggies and herbs, including tomatoes, peppers, yarrow, and parsley. With an indoor lighting and bottom heating setup, our first seeds germinated in 3 days, and after 6 days we're already seeing some 2 inch seedlings. The lighting and heat projects were done very cheaply! Even though a foot of snow fell in the last 24 hours, it's Spring in our grow room (dining room)!

My seedlings somehow made it through 5 days without power, heat or light, and even though the broccolis are looking kinda leggy, everything else seems to be ok. Even the hot peppers sprouted, which is a miracle given the fact that it was 47 degrees inside the house for the days we were without power. Nature sure is amazing!
