garlic mustard - ugh

Hi,

Anyone have suggestions for how to control/get rid of that horrible garlic mustard weed ? I see large patches of it now already very green and growing - its come up within beds wehere I have some lamium and other low, shady plants situated for groundcover, but they haven't woken up yet. I'm thinking I'll just have to try and pull it all out, but it grows so vigorously ! Any ideas ?
Below is a link to a site listing the 20 top invasive plansts - its #3 !

I actually liked the flowers a few years back...before I realized they were taking over the world. I dont know of a better way than pulling it out. I've pulling since the ground thawed. I dont know if it re-grows from broken taproot left behind. I guess I'll find out soon. Last summer I tried to break off all flowers I saw so at least there were no new seeds formed but I think I already have plenty. I've made this my next 10 year project. My tai chi instructor eats the new leaves but I'm not impressed with the taste. I'll try to find out what the theraputic value is.

It looks like your approach is primarily what has to be done - I hunted around some more and found the site below that describes management options. There are no reliable biologic controls available yet (I sure wish the deer would eat the stuff !), so pulling the plants or using herbicides is the way to go. Looks like your idea of the ten-year project is what it'll be - the seeds can be viable for a loooong time :-)

This is a good time of year to use Roundup and I'll be out there shortly attacking the garlic mustard. It won't affect the stuff that isn't up yet and though it will work slowly in cold weather, that weed is dead as soon as the Roundup dries on the leaves. Here's my chance to get the clumps that have worked their way right up against something I treasure.
