Is it too early to direct sow sweet peas? The package says early spring. How early is early?

RE: sweet peas

Now is the time! You'll have better results if you pre-soak them in a cup indoors till they swell up. Some people nick the seed coat first, but most will swell on their own. I also found that starting them indoors in cell paks gave the plants a better chance to grow if you have trouble with tunneling mice or rodents that like to eat the seeds. I lost 3 whole packages of seed that way!

Hi, thanks for the tip....I didn't know you had to soak the peas first. I have already planted two packs, and saved two for a follow up planting in two weeks. I think I will take your advice an soak them first with the second planting..Thanks..JoAnn

I use St. Patrick's Day as a guide as to when to plant my peas..this year I actually did it on that day..weather was just right.

Thanks for asking this question. I've been wondering the same thing. Time to soak those seeds and get them out there!

I'm planting my sweet peas in containers. Anyone know whether I need to do anything special because of this?
