What is your earliest bloom here in the Hudson Valley?

Ok, my neighbor and I caught each other 'looking' around our gardens in our front yards now that the snow is starting to melt. It is the beginning of the spring ritual of daily walks, poking around, and taking inventory, saying hello to favorites returning and comparing what's up in each others gardens.

I have noticed that the iris reticulata are about to bloom, and the foliage on some of the daffodils and tulips are up, as well as some other bulbs...

What is the first plant to flower in your yard?

I thought it was going to be the hellebores, but it is the iris reticulata any day now. .. Most of my yard is still snow covered. Although, if I move some leaves here and there, an early crocus may surprise me.

My first bloom is a bunch of yellow crocus that the previous owner planted into the grassy area of the yard. They sneaked up and opened last weekend, through the snow covering on the ground, and it really felt good to know that at least something else thought spring would ever show up.

Everything else is very slow this year - I've only got a bout an inch of foliage on the iris, daffodils and tulips and a single opened leaf / rosette for the columbines.

It's a little odd that the herbs are also starting to green / grow though, I've got some initial greening on the oregano, yarrow, chives and horehound and it's a week or two early based on past years.

My snowdrops in a sheltered spot bloomed Feb. 28th this year and are now in bloom in the woods. Daffs are up but no sign of iris reticulata as yet. Hellebores are buried in snow and so is the pulmonaria.

Oh, snowdrops, yes, but I have seen no sign of mine. I guess they are in a different micro climate...How nice, you've got blooms! : ) I don't plan on seeing my Hellebores until mid April....at the earliest. They too are buried under about 6 inches still.

I don't know. I planted snow drops the fall before last and they never returned. I see crocus coming up, but nothing yet. The large part of my early bulbs are under multiple feet of snow still where all the snow from my driveway gets pushed, so I won't see most of my crocus and reticulata until mid april. If anyone is interested, I would love to trade for some over bloom snow drops this year. I have seen huge waves of them and always wanted some, but I never see them in stores.

I plant early bulbs against the southside of my house where the snow melts first, so I will get blooms in February. So I now have snowdrops and species crocus with dutch iris and daffs ready to bloom.

Klavier, your bulbs may have been eaten by chipmunks or other varmints. They ate 100's of mine one year, working from right to left.

Nothing yet, here in the foothills of the Taconics. Our ground is very soggy and we still have some patches of snow cover.

Daffs and irises are above ground and green, but barely. Not even the wild witch hazel in our woods have flowered yet. I have seen willow trees starting to leaf out though.

My benchmark for spring is the peepers. When they come out at night to sing I know spring is here for good.

My snowdrops are in bloom, but other things are poking their heads up**.daffodils, crocus, tulips, iris. The lilacs have fat little buds on them, and my winter sown containers are starting to sprout. This week is supposed to be mid to high 50's so there should be a lot of action by the weekend. Once we start getting warmer things start to take off.

My Iris reticulata bloomed just before the snow last week, then some crocus. The snow didn't seem to affect them at all, I was surprised. I have to remind myself next fall to plant more of the iris, they are so cute. No sign of my snowdrops yet.
