Flowery woods

The first daffodils opened up in the woods today to join the snowdrops and chionodoxa. Task for this weekend is to get out there with a couple of pails of compost and more clumps of snowdrops and some winter aconite. Deer seem to pass on these little bulbs.
Since there is just about no top soil there, I scrape away the dead leaves and a few stones, put down the clumps I've dug and then 'plant' them in the compost. The daffs were planted more than 40 years ago and have now seeded themselves around. Snowdrops, chionodoxa, winter aconite and corydalis solida have seeded themselves in my front garden so I can dig up clumps to move. When I do, the holes get filled with compost and that helps new seedlings to get started.

RE: Flowery woods

Wow, what a great weekend to hike in the woods! The deer have left the few daffodils that were in the forest alone and they haven't yet gotten to the blueberry buds that are just starting to break and open up. I haven't seen any signs of trillium yet but it's still early. We've also got a bunch of ivy and sweet woodruff in the woods and it's nice to see the ivy starting to flower and the woodruff leafing out. It'll be really nice if we retain enough moisture to see the huge amount of lady's slipper that were out last year.

Maybe this is the year to try to naturalize some aconite in addition to the goldenseal that went in last year.
