First Fireflies of the Season!

I still can't quite believe it, but I just saw them! I was sitting outside and saw a flicker out of the corner of my eye and there they were! They've been flitting around all night. I'm really shocked - this is easily the earliest I've ever seen them. I checked my garden journal and I didn't see the first ones until almost mid-June last year! I do love them - we didn't have them on the west coast where I grew up - but I hope this doesn't mean we're in for a long, hot summer. Maybe they just show up for the warm weather and then they'll go away again if it cools down?

Saw one a couple of nights ago and found it hard to believe. But it doesn't have to mean a hot summer - here it is a cool, damp day and the only sign of the heat spell is mosquitoes.

I haven't seen any yet. I remember as an kid where I lived there seemed to be millions of them. Last year I seen some but not as many as I have seen in other areas.

Any one know if there is a way to attract more?

As I understand it, they like tall grass and brushy areas where they can hover with some protection. Unfortunately, so do deer ticks - so you have to make a choice. I leave some parts of my property unmowed for the fireflies and birds etc. and do a serious tick check whenever I work out there.

Shoalin,.

Fortunately I have 4 acres and about 1.5 is lawn. I have a fair amount of areas that they would like though. I still haven't seen any fireflies.

Thanks
