Porcupine! (and other critters)

| Saw one prowling near the compost. Yikes! Am used to rabbits, woodchucks, coyote, deer, foxes, skunks, but was startled, and now worried because we have 3 dogs and I don't want to have to spend a day digging quills out of the doggies if they discover it and get too nosy.
Speaking of skunks - does anyone know a good way to get skunk odor off of dogs? Someone suggested bathe them in tomato juice - which I had never heard before.

| YEP - tomato juice it is!!! I have a very nice porcupine necklace that my husband (then boyfriend) gave me when we lived in Alaska. His boss's daughter made it after pulling NUMEROUS quills out of their yellow lab's snout, after he was "nosing" around a porcupine! LOL!!! |

| For skunks you can also try the remedy posted here: http://www.a2zgorge.info/community/health/skunk-remedy.htm I know there are also other deodorizers that should work, I just can't remember where they are posted, but I tend to trust the gang over at this site for some types of information. How far north are you that you have porcupines? I have a very nosy cat in the lower HV region. |

| Dadgardens - I'm in Saugerties - don't know if I'm above or below you. I was surprised when I saw it - thought it was a woodchuck till I got closer look. Had to send the dogs away - since they are very nosy. My cats are not prone to prowl. Thanks for the skunk link. Never would have thought of hydrogen peroxide mix. Will pick up a few bottles at dollar store. Dee |

| Happy to help! I know that tomato juice will work but it takes a few baths for most dogs (no joy). There are other skunk juice mixes out there but I can't remember where I've seen them.(I really should my cat likes to go nose to nose with the critters but has been lucky so far) You're about 70 miles north of me so I probably don't have to worry about porcupines for awhile yet but they do seem to be extending their range which is a good thing (maybe?) |

Another Skunk spray tip: If you can bathe the dog right after they get sprayed, you have a better chance of getting rid of the stink. Use Dishwashing soap. Skunk spray is an oil, and the dishwashing soap really works. Once the oil has a chance to soak into the dogs fur, it's much harder to get rid of the smell. |

I still have a newspaper clip from the NYTimes Nov 2001 in me wallet about just such a remedy. It recommends hydrogen peroxide, a quarter cup of baking soda and a half cup of dish soap... I will put the recipe back in my wallet and continue to hope not to use it... :) |
