$21 for Rhubarb?

I am in Westchester and I just went to a local nursery and they want $21 for a rhubarb plant. Is that crazy? Anyone grow this from seed?

That's a lot. The best thing to do would be to find someone who grows it, and get a division off their plant. Many people have big clumps, at least in my area. I don't think it's usually grown from seed.

That is one heck of a lot of money for a single rhubarb plant! I'm only on the second year from seed so I can't say for sure that it's going to be completely successful. The reason that people don't usually grow it from seed is 1) it takes a year longer to get to a harvest and 2) rhubarb doesn't always come true to type from seed. I've got Glaskins Perpetual and in this year they are just now showing red on some of the stalks while others are still green. They're not too finicky about getting started from seed and growing conditions though I lost one last year due to poor drainage and they seem to be pretty heavy feeders, at least while young.

If you are ever near Kingston, I have extra Rhubarb. I have trouble giving it away. I can't imagine much luck selling it.

I just saw rhubarb plants at Story Nursery in Freehold for $5.98. They were a greener variety, the sign said they were a bit tarter than the red variety.

Yes, the green variety tends to taste more strongly of rhubarb, so if you like that tangy flavor, it's better. If you prefer something more mild, get the red. The green is also a bit more vigorous and grows larger, I think.

Westchester $21, Greene County $6.... not too surprising :)

Toadhill!

Let me know if you really want to get rid of some rhubarb. I'd love to take it off your hands. I'm in Ulster Park.
