Have you been finding that the nurseries are selling plants in much smaller cell packs for much higher prices? Last week I went to 3 Home Depots, 1 Lowes, and about 4 nurseries, and NOT ONE of them are selling 6 packs of annuals any more! The ones that do have packs are selling 3 in a pack for the same price as the 6 used to go for, or more! The lowest price I found the packs for was $1.69/3 in a pack. That's an awfully huge increase in prices this year - what's up with that?!?

The only good deal I did find was "any four 4 inch pots for $10". Got some nice sonic new guinea impatiens, some petunias, and mint. Will have to go back there to fill in where I used to plant the cell packs.

NOw that's weird - I wrote "prices > but sizes but that's not how it showed up... wonder why...

Something to do with the code for the headers. Same reason everytime you try to type in 10" meaning 10 inches it changes it to 10' (10 feet). Anyway - that is my guess. I haven't been out shopping yet so I just thought I would comment on this.... :)

I buy very few annuals but I have noticed the cell packs have been getting smaller over the years. I remember a six pack of marigolds used to be 99 cents not too long ago.

For me, the best place for annuals is Hoeffner Farms on Boyd Road in Montgomery (behind Shop Rite). Haven't been there this year yet, but in the past, you could fill a tray with as many packs as you could fit for $10. And, if you looked closely, some of the cells had more than one plant in it.

Northern Dutchess Botanical was selling all four paks for $1.19. Up from last year but not all that surprising considering the cost of heating oil and such. I was delighted to find mathiola bicornis as well as star impatiens and nicotiana sylvestris. Also got ageratum Blue Horizon which is my standard border filler at this time of year. And some can't do without perennials but they were in quart and half gallon containers and a lot more expensive. Phantom Gardener has starter perennials at very reasonable prices for very small plants.
